St. Francis: Thankyouforawarmwelcome,BrotherBower.AndIcansenseallthelovefromthepeoplehereinRome.ItisapleasuretobehereagainservingtheLord.Butbacktomychildhood,Pat,I’llhavetoadmit,thatyesIwasveryspoiledandIthoughtlittleofmyneighbororGod.ButasImatured,thegoodLordgavemethegracetocomeclosetoHimandtomeetLadyPoverty.ItwasactuallyshethatcalledmetotheLord.IhaddevelopedagreatillnessafterIhadfoughtinthebattletosaveAssisifromPerugia.IwasaprisonerofwarforseveralmonthsandoncereleasedandbackhomeIfellseriouslyill.ItwasthenthatasadnesscameovermeandIcouldnotshakeit.Oneevening,whenIwasoutwithmyfriends,Isawthemostbeautifulwoman’sface.Ididnotrecognizeheranddidnotknowhowtofindher.Ihadthisgreatdesiretofindherandtomakehermybride.

St. Francis: IcouldnotfindheranditseemedthatIcouldnothavehappinessuntilIdid.IbegantoseeallthemoneythatIhadwasted.Moneythatwasmymother’sandfather’s.Ibegantofeelashamedofmyself.Iwouldn’thelpthesickorthepoorandIhadguiltaboutthat.Iwentonatriptobuywoolformyfather’sshopandpassedbyanoldbrokendownchurch.ThereIdecidedtogoinandprayforawhileinhopesthatthishorriblesadnesswouldleaveme.
