A Checklist of The Birds
of S. Gloucestershire
5th Edition June 2020
A Checklist of The Birds of
South Gloucestershire
www.thebirdsofsouthgloucestershire.co.uk
5th Edition June 2020
INTRODUCTION
This is the fifth edition of a checklist of the Birds Of South Gloucestershire and
has been prepared reflecting the status of species and forms believed to have
occurred in a naturally wild state within the recording area.
It incorporates all of the changes to the British List up to and including
December 2017 and fully aligns with that of the International Ornithological
Congress (IOC).
The South Gloucestershire Systematic List follows the conventions of The BOU
British List: A Checklist of Birds of Britain (9th edition) December 2017 which
came into effect on January 1st 2018.
THE LIST
The S. Glos List is under continuous revision; species and forms are either added
or removed following rigorous assessment and are updated on the TBOSG
website. Changes to the list are adopted with immediate effect.
NB: All sightings of rare and scarce birds are subject to ratification by the
appropriate rarities committee!
TAXONOMY
In 2017, following a detailed review TBOSG has adopted, from the 1st January
2018, the International Ornithological Union’s (IOU) IOC World Bird List (Gill &
Donsker 2017) for all its taxonomic needs.
This is the first edition of the S. Glos List following the IOC World Bird List. Any
future changes to the IOC list will be adopted unequivocally.
SPECIES/ FORMS NAMES
The S. Glos list will use the English names for species and forms used by the
International Ornithological Union’s (IOU) IOC World Bird List (Gill & Donsker
2017).
