A CHRISTMAS CHARACTER FROM THE BASQUE COUNTRY

A CHRISTMAS CHARACTER FROM THE BASQUE COUNTRY

Olentzero is a mythological character. He lives in a traditional farm…

…in the mountains of the Basque Country.

He makes charcoal from wood……

…and he also works as a shepherd.

He wears a typical black beret, a checked shirt, blue farmer trousers, long and thick white socks and black sandals called “abarcas”. .

He is a very cheerful man who always go with a donkey…

…and loves children a lot.

He always appears at night on December 24th, Christmas Eve.

He is magic because nobody can see him.

He comes down through the chimneys to leave presents to the good children…

…but if you are not… you get black coal.
