We bid farewell to James Sithole at the end of this year. James will be Triton’s first employee to retire and has been with Triton since 1987. James, you are a true gentleman and it makes us proud to have people like you in our employ. We thank you for your loyalty and dedication and wish you and Elizabeth all the best. James, 67, will be spending his retire-ment years in Nelspruit.

Due to increasing customer demand, we have expanded our network, adding eighteen outlying routes previously cov-ered by sub contractors. This has proved to be extremely successful. The introduction of these areas has re-quired a 2.5 ton vehicle to be added to our fleet and we have chosen Daimler Chrysler as our third vehicle supplier.

TRITON 2010It is that time of the year again when we reflect on another year gone by. 2010 has been another challenging year with the most significant event being

the 2010 Soccer World Cup. General economic growth has been slow with inflation running at similar low levels. This has been complimented by interest rates at levels last seen in August 1979, over 30 years ago. General economic sentiment seems to be very conservative with a wait and see attitude.

WORDS BY: IAN SCHUTTE

Triton has been affected, to a degree, by this slow

conservative business and consumer approach but Triton has managed to continue to break records. We have managed to beat both our highest tonnage moved in a single day and average daily tonnage moved in a month.

2011 will continue to propose chal-lenges in the logistics sector with a se-vere strike expected in the first half of the new calendar year, followed by the sched-uled implementation of the new tolling in Gauteng and surrounding areas and the national rollout of AARTO. All of these events will put strain on the logistics sec-tor which at the end of the day, is going to cost the consumer and affect the infla-tion figure for next year.

We continue to strive to be your num-ber one choice in the break bulk trans-port sector and will embrace these chal-lenges giving our Customers the best possible solutions with the minimal cost to your business.

EAST LONDON FACILITYAfter a two year delay, our brand new East London facility will be ready for occupation in January 2011. The facility will complete the upgrade of our coastal facilities which commenced with George in 2007 and Port Elizabeth in 2009.

WORDS BY: ERIC CORBISHLEY

Latest Fleet UpgradesWORDS: STEVE JARMAN

The facility boasts 4 dock levellers for the loading and

offloading of our linehaul vehicles and 6 loading bays for local collection and delivery vehicles. The warehouse is 1050sqm with the offices, sleeping quarters and ablutions totalling 168sqm. It will

also have a standby generator and a 23000l diesel bowser.

The benefit to customers in East Lon-don as well as the entire coastal route and Johannesburg, will be faster transit and delivery times, due to faster loading and offloading of cargo and through cargo.

The latest addition to our line haul fleet is a Volvo FH480

Globetrotter XL. This is the first of its kind to be delivered in South Africa. The XL cab gives the driver additional space and comfort features, and we have standardised our specs to the 480 HP Volvo with the I-shift gearbox. This model also has a standard voith retarder.

We have ordered six new FH480 Globetrotters from Volvo and the first was delivered during April. Our latest in-terlinks have been fitted with a Wabco EBS e-generation system, superior brake

control and roll/stability support. The unit is also fitted with a smart board al-lowing the driver to check weight loaded etc. The trailer has an aluminum floor, composite body and alloy wheels, reduc-ing the tare weight and allowing extra payload.

Our local fleet will soon take delivery of a number of new Isuzu trucks and the N series will be fitted with the new automat-ic transmission. We will also take delivery of a number of the new F series models, including the FVR900 with the capacity to couple a 7meter drawbar trailer.

Manager’s ConferenceTriton’s 2010 Managers conference was held at the much acclaimed Kloofzicht Lodge in August. Kloofzicht was used as the base camp for the Australian soccer team during the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Nestled at the foothills of the Zwartkops Mountains in the Cradle of Humankind, Kloofzicht Lodge is the essence of tranquillity and ultimate luxury.

Inhouse DevelopmentWORDS: CRAIG COMINS

As usual the mood was very festive and positive following

Managers presentations on their performances over the past financial year. There had been so many developments and goals achieved in all areas of our business, in a very challenging business environment. Listening to the Managers goals for the next financial year is even more encouraging.

Despite the freezing weather we man-aged to organise a fly fishing competition. After a number of hours of fly fishing, we realised we never had many gifted fisher-man. Our much anticipated teambuild-ing exercise delivered very poor results; Brandon Buckley won the competition with a few fingerlings.

Over the past two years Triton has invested in a

team of internal developers that are busy writing many different administration systems. Some of the in-house developed systems are our purchase order system, claims and discrepancies system, incident and accident system and more recently our customer relationship management system.

Triton’s Customer Relationship Man-agement application has proved very successful for our sales team, allowing smooth management of client interaction in a professional manner. This ultimately will allow Triton’s sales staff to perform their job functions more efficiently and make their interaction with their Custom-ers more informative and factual. The system also gives Triton’s Management easier access to all pertinent information

EMOBILEUpdateIn 2008 Triton installed eMobile in our Johannesburg branch. This was followed by installations in Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and George in 2009. In 2010 Triton completed the installation of eMobile in our remaining five branches making it a full national solution.

WORDS: CRAIG COMINS

As expected the response from Drivers and Assistants has

been very positive. With real time updates of delivery and collection clears and real time proof of delivery information, eMobile has added huge value to both Triton’s operation and to Triton’s Customers.

The next step now is to develop eMobile to handle the much anticipated AARTO requirements in the first half of 2011 and to develop a GPS solution to help Drivers navigate their way in the most efficient way to do their deliveries and collections.

s i g n e d . s e a l e d . d e l i v e r e d

on Customers thereby allowing them to manage relationships more effectively.

Our development team has also re-cently created a series of custom built automated reports for Customers that keep them up to date with freight move-ments, thus allowing them to not only reconcile but pro-actively track regular shipments of their goods.

Management AwardsWORDS BY: HENRY BARBER

Branch Manager & Managers’ Manager

For the third year in a row, Rupert Korb our Branch Man-ager in Cape Town, has won the Branch Manager of the Year award. In addition, Rupert was also voted by our Manage-ment Team as the Manager’ Manager of the year. This is

a fantastic achievement. Ru-pert not only runs our Cape Town Branch, but also over-sees and supports our George and Bloemfontein Operations. These accolades are testa-ment to Rupert’s hands-on ap-proach and his intricate knowl-edge of each and every aspect of our business. I can only say

that if ever the day comes that cloning is accepted as a mor-ally acceptable procedure, that Rupert would be an ideal can-didate. Rupert, thank you for your dedicated effort and com-mitment and good luck for the year ahead.

Most Improved Manager

Once again Gerhard Nortje, General Manager Johannes-burg, has walked off with the trophy for most improved Man-ager. When Gerhard joined us in early 2007 our Johan-nesburg operation was not in great shape, but steadily, Ger-

hard and his team have made improvements and the differ-ence is remarkable. Gerhard has been the driving force be-hind us expanding our own de-livery network into some of the outlying areas which were pre-viously serviced by third party agents. We now deliver into

Witbank, Middelburg, Rusten-burg, Ermelo, Secunda, Klerks-dorp, Potchefstroom and Brits, to name a few, with our own vehicles and are busy exploring more routes to add to these. Well done Gerhard and Team.

Branch Sales Manager

After having a strangle hold on this title for three years, our Branch Sales Manager in East London has been dethroned by Scott Hislop, our Branch Sales Manager in Bloemfontein.

Scott your effort and commit-ment has finally paid off. Scott has also been the driving force behind expanding our own de-liveries into certain outlying areas which have tradition-ally been serviced by 3rd party

agents. We now service Kim-berley and Welkom ourselves and are constantly looking to expand further. Well done to Scott and his Team.

Most promising Manager

Brett Lange, Triton’s Port Elizabeth Branch Manager, was awarded the trophy for Most Promising Manager for the second year in a row. Brett has an enthusiasm and en-

ergy that makes him an ideal person to manage Triton’s Plz Branch which is, from a sales point of view, one of the tough-est areas to operate in as the “supply” in PE far outweighs the “demand”. Brett is always

upbeat, hands on and involved in every aspect of his Branch. Brett thanks for your contri-bution and please thank your Team for theirs.

Every year the sales environment changes with 2010 proving to be yet another challenging year. It gets tougher as opposition become more

daring and desperate, thereby changing market forces. Despite all this, the National Sales team were able to turn out an amazing set of results finishing well over target for the financial period.

Sales Consultant of the Year – Rinette Jonker

She has done it again! After a year’s break from the sales competition in 2009, Rinette has come out firing on all cyl-inders and has won the Sales Person of the

Year award for the 3rd time since her return to Triton in 2005. Despite the changes in the sales environment and the sales structure, Rinette has demonstrat-ed what can be achieved when you are fo-cused on achieving great results, and has shown year on year what an asset she is to the business.

Sales Consultant of the Year – Runner up – Wayde Van Aswegen

At the tender age of 24 Wayde has been nipping at the heels of the top per-formers since the day he walked through the doors in 2008. Having just missed the top 3 in 2008 and taking second place in 2009 he has once again taken second place in 2010. A young dynamic go getter is the way that his colleagues describe him, determined and focussed is how the Management team see him. Overall he is a star performer!

These are the shining stars of Triton Express; they have shown over many years what they are capable of achiev-ing for our business. Well done to all the winners and a big thank you for your un-wavering commitment to our business.

Sales Performer of the Year Award

“Success seems to be connected

with action.

Successful people keep moving.

They make mistakes, but they

don’t quit”

Conrad Hilton

Triton introduced a new award this year to honour

individuals who have worked for a minimum period of 10 years for Triton and have been constant outstanding performers during the years they have worked for Triton. This award is earmarked as the ultimate award given out to a Triton employee and won’t necessary be award annually unless Management feels there is somebody worthy of this prestigious award.

No one depicts the intention of this award more than Ra jeshree Singh. Raje-shree is Tri-ton’s Credit C o n t r o l M a n a g e r and has

been in Triton’s employ since 1993. She is the driving force behind our exceptional debt collection perfor-mance for the past 17 years. For the 2010 financial year Triton only wrote off a net figure of thirty eight thousand Rand. This is a remarkable achievement.

Rajeshree adds so much more value than just being a Credit Con-trol Manager as she understands Triton’s business and systems due to her early years spent doing much more than just credit control.

Well done Rajeshree on being the first recipient of this award and thanks for the 17 great years of out-standing performance!

Durban/Jo’burg Soccer Day

The admin teams were the first to take to the field and from

the onset it was apparent that it would be a hard fought match. By the time the final whistle blew, the game had ended in a draw and went to a penalty shootout. With some

razor-sharp placed kicks from the teams and some extraordinary goalkeeping efforts from our Sales Director and man of the match, Rory Kirton, the Tigers emerged as winners with the final score 5 – 4 on penalties.

Raucous Vuvuzela’s welcomed the main game of the day onto the field. The Tigers were resolute on taking the trophy back to Johannesburg and the Durban All Stars were just as determined to re-tain it. With striking footwork and pre-cision from both sides, the tension was palpable as the Tigers scored the first goal. The All Stars retaliated and within minutes the equaliser was scored. The spectators were rooting wildly for their teams. Where would the trophy end up? The second half saw the All Stars more unwavering than ever as they added two goals to end the match as victors with a score of 3 – 1.

The day was concluded with a well de-served lunch and awards ceremony be-fore the Tigers headed back to Johannes-burg. Congratulations to Tseou Moeketsi who was named man of the match.

The success and continuation of this spectacular event on the Triton calendar is reliant on the support it receives from our Directors and our gratitude and ap-preciation is extended to them. Thank you to the teams who supplied wonder-ful amusement, to the Durbanites for the excellent organisation of the event, to the staff who supported the day and last, but not least, thank you to Gerhard Nortje, General Manager Johannesburg, for his involvement.

Conceptualised in 2008, the annual Triton soccer day is always anticipated with great excitement and 2010 proved to be no exception. An unusually wet and chilly day in Durban greeted the Johannesburg based Triton Tigers and hometown boys Durban All Stars on the morning of 11 September at Forest Hills Sports Club in the Upper Highway area. The weather however could not dampen the enthusiasm of the two teams nor their respective supporters who arrived clad in their supporter shirts.

MG Cango International

Indaba 2010

The seven National MG Clubs hold an Indaba (get together)

on a bi-annual basis organised on a rotational basis. The primary event is the national judging of cars in various concourse categories. This year the Indaba was held in Oudtshoorn with Triton Express as the main sponsor.

The event, spread over five days, had members travelling from Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Cape Town, United Kingdom, Holland and Australia to meet up with old friends, show off their beautiful cars and compete in the various categories and events.

By Saturday afternoon, the Indaba was in full swing with an upbeat, friendly and very competitive spirit sensed in the warm Oudtshoorn breeze. The beautiful MG cars were lined up for a test of skill.

The ‘Old Beauties’, proud owners and navigators were ready to compete in a three phase obstacle course. Much to everybody’s entertainment, Stewart

decided to compete in his wheelchair. It was questionable if his special Traffic Cone Safety gear is a National Health and Safety requirement for wheelchair par-ticipants. His ‘vehicle’ was not driven by horse power but by friend power and eve-rybody took turns pushing him through the obstacle course much to the crowd’s delight.

Seeing these beautiful MG’s lined up on the open field was quite breathtaking. All colours, shapes, sizes and models of MG’s were represented with their proud owners waving at all the eager photog-raphers. Some photographers were so keen to take an aerial shot that they risked life and limb on a wonky ladder.

At the award ceremony the high spir-its continued. With ‘The Flintstones’ the theme, some weird and wonderful outfits were on display. Laughter could be heard everywhere.

How wonderful for Triton Express to be the proud sponsor of such an event. Tri-

ton Express and the MG Club members seem to have a lot in common – a pas-sion for our vehicles, pride in our work and camaraderie with a good old com-petitive spirit to motivate us to do better. MG Club members also demonstrate a valuable lesson – one does not get old, one becomes ‘vintage’, and can still enjoy life’s pleasures and good friendships. The journey is as enjoyable as the destination.

Who would have thought a beautiful vintage car can have such an effect on a person’s heart.

This event was hosted at Kleinplaas in Oudtshoorn from Thursday 16th September to Sunday 19th September 2010

Two years ago Triton’s Management drafted a three year BBBEE plan. The first target was to become BBBEE compliant and then to improve on Triton’s compliance status by at least one level a year for the next two years.

WORDS: IAN SCHUTTE

In 2009 Triton became compliant and it is with

great pride that Management can announce that Triton has improved on our 2009 compliance level and achieved a level seven compliance together with being a value add company for the 2010 year. This means that any Customer spending with Triton will be allowed to claim 62.5% of their spend with Triton as BBBEE spend. This may not sound like much however the Generic BBBEE Scorecard only requires companies procurement spend to be 50% BBBEE spend. That means Triton’s score is already giving Customers 12.5% more than what they require to achieve 100% under the preferential procurement section.

Triton is planning to achieve level six in 2011 together with remaining a valued add company which means 75% of our Custom-ers’ spend with Triton will count towards their BBBEE preferential procurement spend.

If anyone requires a copy of Triton’s BBBEE certificate please look on our website at: www.tritonexpress.co.za alternatively you can get hold of Jo Anne Wilkinson on (031) 792 8800.

Heleen and her East London

team chose CHOC in East London as their recipient for their Socio Economic Spend. During the month of August, the East London team painted and decorated the Social Room where the children go for interaction, stimulation and education. They also bought new chairs, tables and curtains.

Each Branch throughout Triton have been allocated a Budget for their Socio Economic Development initiatives, which

is aimed at providing upliftment of com-munities and disadvantaged people from each Branch’s respective communities.

2010Over the World Cup period, Triton held various competitions in support of the World Cup and to encourage enthusiasm, team building and spirit, which also saw competitions such as the Best Decorated Branch, the Best Diski Dancers, the Best National Anthem Singers, as well as various Lucky Draws.

WORDS: JO ANNE WILKINSON

Prizes included Bafana Bafana Caps, World Cup Bags, Soccer

Balls, Key Rings, Triton Vuvuzela’s and South African Flags.

A monthly FIFA World Cup 2010 news-letter was sent to all employees which ensured that all employees were kept

abreast of the tournament, as well as provided general, yet interesting informa-tion on teams, players, news broadcasts and other information pertaining to the beautiful game.

Well done to all Triton Express employ-ees for all their support and enthusiasm during the World Cup Tournament! We are a proudly South Africa company! Also a big Thank you to Manco for the budget for the various world cup initiatives and their support.

ADMINTeambuildingTriton’s Admin team partook in quite a different teambuilding event this year. A four course gourmet cooking competition was hosted by Gecko Cooking School in Musgrave. Gecko Culinary Adventures specialises in quick and easy gourmet cooking, teaching you how to create fabulous meals without spending hours in the kitchen. Triton chose the Barter and Bribe contest where participants have to rely on good communication and teamwork for success.

WORDS: IAN SCHUTTE

Some hidden talents were discovered with the

competition inspiring the most reluctant of ‘chefs’. It didn’t take long before even the most reticent suddenly became bold. Certain

characters sent the entire class into hysterics by showing us how not to do things whilst others showed off their hidden “culinary genius”.

Great team spirit was displayed on the day with loads of fun and laughter enjoyed by all. Unfortunately there had to be a win-ner at the end of the day and The Storm Troopers were the victors. It was all in the presentation.

The Service Consultant Team of Triton ExpressIt is imperative that we maintain constant contact with our clients, especially in these turbulent times. We therefore need to continuously go back to our clients and say “Look this is what is happening in your business, this is what is happening in the market” and why. We cannot predict what is going to happen tomorrow; it is therefore important that we meet with our Clients to review and evaluate their distribution patterns. After all, distribution costs are an investment not an expense.

WORDS: RORY KIRTON

We believe that our clients have chosen us as their distribution

solution as a direct result of our on-going commitment to ensuring that we deliver a service that exceeds our Customers’ expectations. The success of this is vested in the Service Consultants around the country namely Jillian Govender (Durban), Samantha Nell (Cape Town), Carmen Parsons (Gauteng) and Clinton Lewis (Gauteng).

The Service Consultant positions were created just over a year ago with the

expectation that we would grow and de-velop the division annually. The role of the service team has been to ensure that we are keeping close to our Clients, we are listening to their needs, we are find-ing solutions to address these needs and that we are resolving any problems our

clients may have quickly and effectively. Their efforts and commitment over the last year have been truly exemplary and we are starting to see the fruits of their efforts, I would like to express my grati-tude to the team and trust that you will keep up the great work.

JO ANNE WILKINSON:

Jo Anne Wilkinson was employed by Tri-ton a year ago. She has been in the Hu-man Resource environment for the past 14 years, firstly as an HR Administrator to HR Officer, then to HR Manager and thereafter an HR Specialist.

Prior to starting with Triton, she had her own HR & Labour Law consultancy, which included clients such as Unilever, Derivco, Internet Solutions and Grindrod Group. She was also the Human Resource Management and Labour Law lecturer at Varsity College Durban North and Westville between 2005 and 2009.

Her goals are to ensure that Human Resources become a strategic business partner at Triton, whilst simultaneously providing an excellent, first class service to both the Employer as well as the Employees. “People are my passion and win-win solutions are my goals”.

Jo is married with four sons, ranging between the ages of 14 and 3 years old. Her hobbies include triathlons, piano

and creating awareness and raising funds for various different charitable organisations. She can be described in one sentence as being “Short, sweet and to the point”.

GEORGE HORN:

From an early age George had a huge interest in vehicles and machines. After Matric he decided to join the MAN Truck and Bus apprentice program in 1990. He qualified as a diesel mechanic in 1994 and moved to Swedish Truck Distributers (Volvo).

He eventually managed Workshops for Volvo and MAN but found himself more interested in logistics. After 11 years with MAN and Volvo he decided to jump fence and has since worked for 3 transport companies before moving to Triton.

With 20 years experience in the transport industry George believes he will compliment Tritons linehaul operation and ensure that only the highest level of service will be delivered to Triton’s Clients. “I am proud to be part of the

Triton team and I am sincerely looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead”.

“I always seem to be concentrating on work as transport is my hobby and passion, but when I do break away I enjoy spending time with my family, fishing and watching Western Province beat the Bulls”.

ELRESE VOGES:

Elrese’s introduction in the logistics / transport industry started with United Express as a Customer Services Supervisor, where after she moved to TNT International Express and then RTT as a Sales Executive.

“I have had so many experiences in our industry and can with confidence and pride say that I have never experienced such an amazing work ethic evident in Triton. A family environment where everyone is welcomed with open arms, we work hard and we play hard, but most of all, we deliver on our promises!”

“One of the very best pieces of advice I

People on the move

Triton Express

have ever received, is to remember that every single consignment has an emotion attached to it, to our Clients it’s not just another parcel, remember and live that!”

Apart from socializing and selling of course, Elrese loves animals, reading, reality television and no surprise here – shopping!

STEVE BURE:

Although young and still a little wet behind the ears, Steve Bure is a very vibrant and enthusiastic sales person.

His experience in the industry is limited but what he has, has helped him not only to understand the industry but also understand what people want and need. This should stand Steve in good stead to excel at Triton Express.

Steve previously worked at DAWS where he was very involved in the operations as well as the sales, but decided to move for bigger and better prospects.

His hobby and sport is Water Polo which

takes up most of his time after work, so his red eyes in the morning are because of this?. ”I am looking forward to excelling at Triton Express and becoming a valuable member of the team”.

DENZIL RENECKE:

Denzil Renecke started his career at FedEx as an operations assistant in 1996. So the operations staff can remain confident that he won’t oversell and under-deliver. Denzil had his fair share of doing night shifts, offloading vehicles and lodging freight. He progressed into customer services and finally sales.

“I think it would be fair to say that I have a good general understanding of the cargo and freight industry from the ground up”. Denzil also worked for OCS, EWC and his most recent employment was with Bigfoot.

“I came to Triton in the middle of August 2010 and I’ve decided this is exactly where I want to be. Triton brings together a responsible work ethic and accountability by individuals that include

management. This is matched only by the company`s commitment to its staff and Customers. I have been around the industry and can see that Triton has got this mix right by continuing to develop people and systems to stay on top of its game. It is rewarding working with winners”.

Denzil is a hobbyist who enjoys his garage. He has plenty of tools and knows how to use them! He is an avid gardener and has a half constructed fish pond and lapa to complete.
