A CLOSE-UP ON THE SOUL

A FILM WORKSHOP AT THE FOOTSBARN THEATRE SPACEApril 19th - 22nd 2018

All the world's a stage - and increasingly that stage is the internet. In an era of self taped auditions, actors showreels and continual requests for links to your work, modern actors needs to develop theirskills and techniques to work both on stage and film and provide quality examples of their work online. With traditional actor training primarily focused on theatre, many actors confronted by a lens are intimidated and overly conscious but great acting has no master and the ability to move andengage an audience, no fixed medium. An actor must understand the separate disciplines and techniques required to work freely between film and theatre. This workshop is designed to give you valuable performance tuition and on camera practice to improve your technique and you will leave with a professionally shot video of your work to aid you, in your future search for employment.

Footsbarn are an internationally recognised theatre company with a forty five year history, renowned for their free and innovative performance approach. The companies actors work in theatreand film and are offering a four day intensive film workshop, on interpreting Shakespeare's speeches and soliloquies for camera.

If music be the food of love - To be, or not to be - Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts - Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo....Shakespeare's greatest speeches are firmly embedded in our collective conscience and are the first steps of a journey that has thrilled audiences for four hundred years. No single writer has explored the human condition more thoroughly and navigating the well trodden paths of a Shakespearean speech or soliloquy is one of the most difficult challengeswe actors face, as he offers a glimpse into our souls.

A CLOSE UP ON THE SOUL is a workshop in two parts concentrating on Shakespeare's speeches and soliloquies and the difficulties of translating them for film. The speeches and soliloquies of Shakespeare reveal a character's complex interior world, twisting their emotions and pushing them into new and challenging directions, forcing an actor to look deep within themselves. Our aim is to enable you with the necessary tools to tackle any Shakespearean speech, be it in film or theatre, with confidence.

PART 2Making friends with the camera, how shots interpret scenes, creating your imaginary audience, projecting performance beyond the lens, when continuity does and doesn't matter, reality doesn't have to be boring.

PREPARATIONWe will email you a comprehensive list of some of Shakespeare greatest speeches (if you have something you would like to tackle, that is not on the list, please bring it) and you will be expected to arrive with your text already memorised.

Sessions will commence at 10am and the studio will be open thirty minutes before-hand to allow you to warm up. The first two days we will work in the studio, focusing solely on the text. On day one, you will be invited to perform your chosen pieces in a forum style setting. Each performance will be followed by a brief analysis session, after which you will work on the piece in front of the group with a director, who will help to develop and shape your performance and address areas which need to be strengthened. Day two will introduce exercises and techniques to help you immerse yourself more freely in the text, opening up the body and the voice. In the afternoon we will examine the pieces again, with an emphasis on adding detail and depth, with a view to your final presentation. Lastly we will look at tailoring your performance for camera, decide on a suitable location and create a storyboard and look for your scene.

Days three and four will be dedicated solely to the filming and we will create a mini Shakespearean world just for you. You will have access to costumes from Footsbarn's impressive design department and your speech will be professionally lit and filmed on HD cameras with shot structures determined by the style of the piece. All designed to create as realistically as possible, a professional filming environment. Filming will take roughly an hour and a half per person and you will receive a call sheet beforehand. All participants will be present during the filming sessions to give them a better understanding of the mechanics of the shooting process, you will be given ample time to prepare yourselves thoroughly for when your scene approaches.
