What is the IB at GNS?GNS became an IB World School in 1996 when it was authorized to offer the IB Diploma Programme. With the implementation of the Middle and Primary Years Programs, we now offer a continuum of the International Baccalaureate programmes from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12. Outdoor EducationThe goal of Outdoor Education at GNS is to provide students with the outdoor travel and living skills needed to develop self-reliance in the wilderness and stewardship for the natural world. By exploring the Vancouver Island wilderness in multiple seasons and developing technical skills in each unique activity, our students build self-confidence and interpersonal skills. Options include:

• hiking the Juan de Fuca and Kludahk trails

• surf and paddle trip to Tofino

• kayaking around the Gulf Islands

• winter camping in Strathcona Park

• kayaking in Barkley Sound and to the Broken Islands Marine Park

Family Boarding Each year, GNS welcomes students from countries around the world including Austria, China, Costa Rica, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Spain, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, United States, and Vietnam.

Most international students at GNS take part in our unique Family Boarding Program. The goal of the Family Boarding Program is to provide a welcoming, safe, supportive, English-speaking, family environment for students from other countries by placing them with GNS families; either current parents or staff. Every effort is made to match the most appropriate student to a particular family—creating a comfortable and positive experience for everyone.

Family Boarding Host Families care for and nurture their students, much like they would their own children, thus contributing to the student’s success by helping them:

• to improve their English language skills,

• to understand other cultures, and

• to get the most out of their experience studying at GNS and living in Canada.

Providing an international student with the best possible experience requires tremendous communication, coordination and effort on the part of the student, their teachers, support staff, the Host Family and their parents. GNS employs a full-time program coordinator to facilitate this network of support.

English SupportOur international students are integrated fully within the community in their classes, homeforms, co-curricular activities and beyond—all are focused making them part of the GNS family. English is the language of inclusion within this family, but an understanding of how others learn languages, and of their cultures, histories and languages is also promoted and supported.

All international students can take English A (or equivalents) with their Canadian peers and are supported to do so in every grade level from Grade 6 to 12; the program is inclusive and native speakers of English are taught alongside second language students.

In addition, our small English Acquisition classes help to develop second language students’ confidence and ability in English.

Our programs in English Acquisition support steps and stages within the wider curriculum but are tailored to the needs of the students within the class. Our second language students develop social and academic levels of English with a focus on learning about our GNS community, as well as Canadian customs and traditions.
