DavidHendersonwasborninEdinburgh,Scotland10April1895.HeenlistedforserviceduringtheGreatWarwiththe2ndBattalionCameronHighlanders,andwassenttofightinMacedoniainNovember1915,whereheserveduntilreturninghomeinJanuary1919.

On2 July1920 the19th (Lothian&Border)ArmouredCarCompany,RoyalTankRegimentwas formedatEdinburgh fromtheremnantsoftheoldLothian&BorderHorseYeomanry(TF)andotherfreshrecruits.ItwasduringthisperiodthatDavidHendersonjoinedthenewformation.In1939withtheoutbreakofWWIIlooming,theregimentrevertedtoitsoldtitle–1stBattalion,Lothian&BorderHorseandcameunderthecontroloftheRoyalArmouredCorps,andweretrainedtouseShermanVTanks.

FightinginFranceaspartofthe51stHighlandDivision,SergeantDavidHendersonandalmosttheentire1stBattalionLothianandBorderHorsewerecapturedwiththe51st(Highland)Division.Heavilyoutnumberedandoutflanked,abravefightingretreatwasfoughtagainstGermanforcesforsome60milesuntilitreachedthesmallfishingportofSt.Valery-en-Caux,wherehavingrunoutofammunition,foodandsupplies,theywereforcedtosurrender12June1940.SergeantHendersonwascapturedandwastospendtherestofWWIIatStalagXXI-B(Schubin),StalagXXI-D(Poznan)andStalag334(Lambinowice)untilhisliberationinearly1945.

He served withtheKOYLIsinNorway,landingatNamsos17April1940,wheremovingsouthtowardsKvamtheymetaforceofGermancracktroops,andweretakenprisonerat Namdalseidet. They were initially moved to Trondheim for a period, thentakenbyshiptoDenmark,andfinallysentincattletruckstoStalagXXAinThorn,Poland.Whilstthere,heandotherPOWsweretakenbytraintoworkatSellestrauontheBalticCoast,andtheresufferedgreathardship,andadditionallyin1943CorporalBellwassentencedto6monthsinthemilitaryprisonatGraudenzforpurchasingBlackMarketflourtofurnishcakesforaNewYear’sparty.Havinglostagreatdealofweight,hereturnedto‘ordinary’POWlifeatStalagXX-B at Fallingbostel in West Germany.As a local paper from 1969 records insome detail, in late 1944 Corporal Bell and an associate were then very nearlyshot formanufacturing linen-stuffedcounterfeit cigarettesandswapping themfor food with the camp guards.Additionally, during his time here as a POW,CorporalBellwrotetotheMayorofSheffield,askingforapenpaltohelppassthetime.Whilstheheardnothingforsometime,hewassuddenlyinundatedbylettersandphotographsfromyoungladiesandgents,andeventheoddcartonofcigarettes!Thisapparentlycreatedawaveofletterstotownmayors,whichwassoonstampedoutbytheprisonguards. Perhapshavingreachedhislowest,heandtwoFrenchprisonerseffectedtheirescapefromStalag357byswimmingnaked(withpossessionstiedupinagroundsheet)throughthelengthofthecamplatrinetrenchtothenearbyriver.HewastolearnlaterthatthetwoFrenchprisonershadescapedalso,butthatattheendofthewarsome14bodiesofunsuccessfulescaperswerefoundinthatsamefoulstretchoftrench.Notlongafterthisattemptatescape,inearly1945hemanagedtobreakawayfromhismarchingcolumnofprisoners,whowerebeingrelocatedtoanewcamp,andfinallyreachedalliedforces.AfterhisreturntoEngland,wherehewassoonmarried,heremainedwiththeArmy,beingtransferredtotheRAOCwithwhomheserveduntil23August1961–allinallatotalof22years.Tragically,despiteapeacefulretirement,hechosetoendhisownlife30October1986. AsHMS Sealtookevasiveactionsitcameintocontactwithamineandwasseverelydamagedbyanexplosion,forcinghertotheoceanfloor,floodingtheminingcompartmentandpartofthecrewspace.Aftersometimeandrunningshortofoxygen,indesperationthecrewwascalledtothecontrolroomforprayer,afterwhichquitemiraculouslyHMS Sealgraduallyrosefrom the seabed to the surface, at 1.00am, 5 May.Attempts were made to get the engines started, but the submarine wasunmanageable.At 2.50am HMS Seal was sighted once again by German aircraft and attacked, which left First LieutenantButlerandoneratingbadlyinjured.Firewasreturnedbythevessel’sLewisgununtilitjammedandwithanyfurtherresponsenowimpossible,aGermanseaplanelandedclosebytotaketheCaptainprisoner,andsoonaftertheGermantrawlerUJ-128arrivedtotowtheailingsubmarinetoFrederickshavn. DespiteGermanattemptstoreconditionandoperateHMS Sealtouseaspartofthepropagandawar,thesewereineffective,and the submarine was finally scrapped in June 1941. The crew of the vessel were taken prisoner of war at Marlag 333 ,includingLieutenantClark,until theendofhostilities.After theireventual liberation inMay1945,LieutenantCommanderLonsdalewastriedbyCourt-Martialonchargesoffailingtoengageenemyaircraftandoffailingtopreventthesubmarinefallingintoenemyhands,butwashonorablyacquitted,asweretheotherseniorofficers. JamesCritchleyservedinthe144th(EastLancashire)RegimentRACduringWWII,whichformedpartofthe33rdArmouredBrigade.LandinginNormandyatGoldBeach6fJune1944,the144th’sShermanIandFireflytanksgraduallyproceededtowardsthe major tactical objective of Caen, where heavy fighting ensued as part of Operation ‘Charnwood’. On the 16th-18th Julythe144thRACweredeployedinsupportofthe59th(Staffordshire)InfantryDivisionaspartofOperation‘Pomegranate’- adiversionaryattackpriortothelaunchofOperation‘Goodwood’bytheBritish2ndArmyjusttwodaysafterwards.

TheaimofOperation‘Pomegranate’wastoconvincetheGermanforcesthatthiswasgoingtobethemainBritish‘breakout’point,andinthisaimitwasverysuccessful.Britishcode-breakerswereabletoconfirmthatintheirinterceptionstheGermanshadreporteda‘particularlydangerousarmouredthrust’takinginthisarea.ItwasduringtheseactionsintheareaofNoyers-Bocage,againsttheGerman276&277Divisions,supportedbyelementsof2ndPanzerand9thSSPanzerDivision,thatActingSergeantCritchleywasrecommendedfortheDCM,laterawardedtheMM.

TherecommendationfortheDCMwasmadebythethenLieutenant-ColonelAlanJolly,CommandingOfficerofthe144thRAC,whichwassubsequentlydowngradedforreasonsuncertain,readsasfollows:

AsisrecordedintheBattalionWarDiary,soldiersfromthe10thBattalionlaunchedanight-timeattackuponanadjacentenemytrench.Followinganearliergasandartilleryattack,thesoldierssetoffintworaidingpartiesunder2ndLieutenantELawrenceand2ndLieutenantJPLorrains.Eachpartyransome30yardsacross‘NoMan’sLand’beforeslowingtocrawlthroughgapsintheenemywire,butupontheireventualdiscoverytheyweremetwithheavyriflefireandbombing.Theraidersretaliatedsuccessfully:‘gettingagoodnumberofbombsintotheenemy’strench,fromwhichcriesandgroanscouldbeheard’.SecondLieutenantLawrencewasherewounded,butcontinuedlongenoughtoorganisehispartytowithdrawtothedepartureditch,whereuponthepartyunderLorrainssuccessfullyattacked,reachingtheenemyparapet,bayonetingsentriesandbombingtheenemy,whowerenotedtobestillwearingtheirgasmasks.Despitetheirsuccessininflictingheavycasualties,bothpartieswereforcedtowithdrawowingtotheoutnumberingenemyforcesandtheirowncasualties,despitethepartyunder2ndLieutenantLorrainshavingmadeasecondbutunsuccessfulrallyingattack.

EnteringthehousetoconfrontMrKing,DCCavillranstraightintotheroomdemandingthegun,towhichMrKingreturnedashot, leavingDCCavillseverelywounded,andimmediatelyshothiswife in theback.Kingdemandedthemall to leave,andDCsRileyandHalliwellextricatedDCCavillfromthescenefortreatment.Anotherthreepoliceofficerssoonarrivedinsupport,oneofwhom,InspectorO’Donnell,attemptedtonegotiatewiththegunmanbutreceivedashotgunwoundtothechest,butthrewachairatthegunmanandescapedthroughawindow.

Inresponse to theseverityof thesituationandmountingcasualties, thedecisionwasmadeforarmedpolice tomaketheirmove,andalsotofireteargasintothebuilding,followedbypolicedogs.Intheensuingchaos,ashotwasheardfiredinsidethebuilding,asMrKingshotandwoundedhimself.Takentohospital,herecoveredtostandtrialaccusedofthemurderofhiswifeandalsoInspectorO’Donnell,whodiedfromhiswounds.Hewaseventuallyconvictedonlyofmanslaughteronbothcounts,duetoasuccessfuldefencecasemadeonthegroundsofmentalinstability.

MichaelNewmanwasborninKinsale,CountyCork,Ireland,andenlistedforserviceintheRoyalNavalReserve30October1894atMilfordHaven.Intheyearspriortotheoutbreakofwarin1914hehadservedasMateaboardvariousfishingandtrawlervesselsoperatingoutofMilfordHaven,butwascalledaboardHMS JupiterinAugust1914,servingaboardthatshipuntilMay1915.

TheTyneGuardShipHMS Jupiter,aMajestic-classbattleship,wassentoutinresponsetoaRussianrequestforassistanceinperformingice-breakingdutiesintheWhiteSeapassagetowardsthecityofArchangel.Itwasofkeyimportancetokeepthispassage free from constricting ice to maintain this shipping lane, since the Russian vessel responsible for these duties hadbrokendown.Thiswasakeyrouteforthemovementofwarmaterialsandmunitions.

DepartinginFebruary1915,HMSJupiterfreednumerousvessels(includingSS Thracia)fromthecrushingseaice,onoccasionusingexplosivechargestodoso.Thischallengingtask,whichregularlyinvolvedworkingintemperaturesaslowas-20ºC,endedsuccessfullyinMay1915,andthesailorsandcrewaboardHMS JupiterwererewardedbyTsarNicholasIIwithvariousHonoursandAwards.

ArthurJosephWilliamNorris,ofStHelliers,Jersey,wasbornc.1846,andisconfirmedashavingservedaboardHMS AlertasCarpenter’sCrewduringtheArcticExpeditionof1875.EnlistingforservicewiththeRoyalNavy12September1870,heservedaboardHMS Alertduringthisexpedition,whichalsoincludedHMS Discovery,comingaboardontheformervessel23May1875.

TheArcticExpeditionof1875-1876,ledbytheintrepidnavigatorSirGeorgeStrongNares,wassentbytheAdmiraltywiththeprincipalaimofreachingtheNorthPole,travellingviatheSmithSound(betweenGreenlandandEllesmereIsland).Theshipsbattledthroughheavyseaiceduringtheirvoyagesandthecrews(particularlyofHMS Alert)wereravagedbyscurvyastheyeachpassedanArcticwintercaughtinthepackiceinseparatelocations.FromtheirbaseatFloebergBeach,thecrewofHMS AlertlaunchedambitioussledgingexpeditionswiththeaimofseeinghowfartheGreenlandlandmassextendednorth,toseeiftheycouldreachtheNorthPole,aswellastakingtheopportunityofmappingthecoastlines.Bothexpeditionsresultedinneardisaster,inwhichtheteamssufferedheavilyfromfurtherscurvyandrequiredreliefpartiesfortheirrescue.Inlightofthestateofhisreturningmen,NaressawtoitthattheExpeditionshouldreturnhomeratherthanfaceanotherArcticwinter,fromwhichtheymightnotinfactreturn.EscapingthepackiceinastorminAugust1876,theyreturnedtoEngland.DespitehavingfailedtoreachtheNorthPole,theexpeditionsucceededinreturningwithalargeamountofscientificandcartographicinformation,andHMS Alerthadinfactsailedfurthernorththananyothervesselonrecordatthetime.

Serving on numerous vessels in his career, Arthur Norris was present in port aboard HMS Asia at the time of the 1881Census (from which we derive the above biographical information), and was later promoted to Carpenter’s Mate in early1884. He was discharged from further service 14 September 1890, after a career of 20 years with the Royal Navy. He wassenthismedal26May1877.Heisshownonthe1891and1901CensusesaslivinginPortsmouthasaSeamanPensioner,andinterestingly,hissonArthurJFNorrisisshownasAbleSeaman,RN.Genealogicalresearchappearstoshowthattherecipientofthismedal,AJWNorris,diedin1911atPortsmouth.
