Yesterday I interviewed Tome. I asked her some questions.  

I asked her, “How do feel about your job?” She told me she likes the job because “I could help every woman to look perfect.”  

Later, I asked her “What are your company’s benefits?” She answered, “My boss is a good person. He gives every employee benefits so I never think about whether I will change for a new job.”  

I continued to ask her if she would prefer to work there or go to a company with better benefits. She told me, “My boss teaches me a lot of skills so I will stay here to work and I don’t want to go anywhere.” 

The last question I asked her, “What would you like to do in your free time?” She said, “I prefer to walk in the park and ride my bike in my free time. It’s good to relax.”  

I congratulated her and told her, “I will see you next week.”

What the person does: Waiter 

Work or leisure: Work 

 

Last week, I interviewed the guy whose name is, Danny. I called him Danny because his name is very difficult to pronounce. Danny didn’t want a serious interview. He liked a chat and he knew what I wanted to know about him. Then he said:  

“There are a lot of rules to be a waiter. It varies from different restaurants. In my work place, we have our golden rules. Everyone has to practice it. Love to say, “yes,” is one. It means that we should say yes to any request from a customer. If the request is an outrageous demand, only the manager has the power to say NO, but most of the circumstances the manager can accommodate. We need to know our products. Major ingredients in our dishes, nowadays, there are many people with food allergies. Always use a tray to transport drinks. Always hold a drink at the stem of glassware. There are many, but these are the basics in this industry.” 

“Of course we need to recommend dishes. We go through training before our first moneymaking shift. We have to go through our menu test after getting hired so recommending dishes is easy. We also get a chance to try all our dishes during training.” 

“We don’t exactly need to entertain guests. We don’t even need to sing happy birthday songs to customers. That is a bit tacky. In fine dining restaurants, we don’t want to disturb other guests and people want to keep it low‐key. Just a candle on their dessert and a simple happy birthday from the waiter is needed.” 

“All problematic customers are dealt with by the manager. That is what they are hired for. You need experience for any occupation. So for us, you need to know the fundamentals, especially in a big city and high end restaurants. Most restaurants require you to have two years experience, depending if the restaurant is prestigious or not.” 

“First and foremost, it pays my bills. Second, my passion is food and wine. Working at a restaurant is sort of a stepping stone for owning one in the future. I love to drink and eat. Did you know there are so many wines out there? Learning them is a real challenge. That is what I am striving for.” 

At that time, he was busy therefore we finished up the interview.

Last week, I interviewed my friend. Her name is Bella. She graduated from Brooklyn College last year. We talked about her career. Following are details about our conversation: 

The first question, “Which subject do you teach?” Bella said, “I teach mathematics.” 

“Can you tell me why you chose mathematics?” Bella said she feels mathematics is very easy, interesting, logical, and can exercise our brain and thinking. I said, “Well, it’s not good for me. I think mathematics is very difficult and not qualified. She said, “If you understand the theory, you will love it. Ha…” 

We continued with the third question, “How long have you been doing this job?” “About 2 years,” Bella said. “Do you think teaching mathematics is difficult?” She said, “For beginners it’s a little difficult because I need to adapt to a new environment and the different personalities of the students.” 

“Could you please tell me how you can become a good teacher?” “Well,” Bella said, “we need more responsibility and patience.”  

“That is a nice career for you,” I said. “Yes, I know and love it,” Bella said. 

“I need to study and obtain a master’s degree.” “You can do it,” I said.

  On the morning of May 16, I interviewed Ivy. When I met Ivy, I told her my name and greeted her. She told me her name and gave her resume to me. Then I asked her whether I could ask her some questions.  

Later, I asked her what her opinion was about our store.  She answered that our company had a good reputation and our jewelry was famous all over the world. She also said that she wanted to be a salesperson in our company.  

I continued to ask her why she chose a sellers position. She told me because she liked to work with customers.  

I asked her if she can finish her work herself. I asked her what she did when she made a mistake. She said that she found out the reason why she made the mistake so she could avoid it the next time.  

I asked her what she thought about overtime. She told me she liked to work 40 hours a week, but she can work overtime.  

Then I asked her what she planned to do in the next five years. She told me that she wanted to be a sales manager after five years. She told me that she liked to learn a lot of things from her job. I told her to go to work next week.

  2 days ago, I called Mei Phung, my friend in California. We talked about our life in America, then I asked her about her job: 

Jane: Mei Phung, what did you do to become a successful fashion designer? 

Mei: When I was in college, I worked at a part‐time job. I worked so hard and learned how to draw and design clothes at home. 

Jane: What impacted you to become a fashion designer? 

Mei: You know I love beauty. When I was a little girl, I promised myself I would work hard to become a fashion designer and I wanted everybody to look good in my product. 

Jane: When did you begin your career? 

Mei: I started my career when I was 20 years old. 

Jane: How many styles do you design per month? 

Mei: Depends on my mood. I always work nights. You know, it’s easy to come up with ideas. 

Jane: How do you feel when your products go so fast? 

Mei: Oh my goodness! That makes me very happy and satisfied about my products because I can bring beauty and a happy life to everyone.  

Jane: Have you ever designed your own styles? 

Mei: Of course, yes! I really care about fashion that is why I love my job. 

Jane: Thank you so much for giving me your information. We will talk next time, okay? And take care of yourself.

And then I asked Ab, “What do you do now?” Ab said, “I study at school. Now I have the hotel housekeeper diploma.”  

“Oh! Congratulations, but are you interested in this job?” “Yes. It is my dream, gold job.”

Advice 

 

 

 

 

 

Are you a new student? Here is some advice from class E4 on what to do to make your

studies at University Settlement successful and enjoyable!

• Practice English, not your native language, with your classmates. Always. Even when

you are tired and lazy and don’t want to.

• Practice speaking English with your friends and neighbors when you are not in class. It

will help you improve your English more quickly. Class time is not enough for improving

your English. You need to speak English outside of class, too.

• Watch TV and movies and listen to the radio.

• Read newspapers or books when you have time.

• Talk to your pets. (Talk to anyone or anything that will listen, or at least not interrupt

you.)

• Write daily notes or a diary of your daily life in English.

• Do your homework even if you are busy and tired. You can do it on the subway, for

example.

• Don’t use your cellphone in class because it is distracting. It distracts you, other students,

and the teacher.

• If you don’t come to school, please call the office because they are worried about you.

Also, call a classmate to learn what you did in class and to get your homework. Try to

prepare for the next class by doing some extra work.

• Try to be on time because it is distracting when students come late. If you have to come

late, try to come into the classroom quietly and try to catch up with what is going on in

class as quickly as possible.

• Try to go to class every day because you always learn something.
