Welcome to the second edition of ‘Summer Suffolks’. I hope you enjoy looking over the

highlights from the Society shows and sales over the last four months. From a Society perspective, the season kicks off in May and runs right through to the beginning of September and with the Yearbook not coming out until the New Year this is a great opportunity to share some of the highlights from over the summer.

2018 has been a year of challenges and change. In the office we have successfully migrated our database from Basco to Grassroots. With Laura and Margo both off at the same time on maternity leave, our intern, Dara, stepped up to the mark and did an excellent job keeping things on an even keel. Dara has been supported by our temporary part-timers Katie and Cherith. A big thanks to all three. Following Laura’s resignation, we have just completed the recruitment process for a replacement, I am sure you will look forward to getting to know Anna over the coming months.

It has been a difficult time for the world of agriculture in general and the sheep industry in particular with storms and rain followed by an extremely dry summer. Brexit looms large on the horizon and all of this uncertainty is a major cause for concern. As things start to crystallise politically, we will be in a position to support and guide all of our members in the UK, Republic of Ireland and mainland Europe.

Last year we introduced Facebook Live Broadcast at our National Sale at Shrewsbury and the Scottish Area Sale at Stirling. Following the outstanding success of these two pilots, we then broadcast live from the Suffolk lamb ring at Kelso Ram Sales. In 2018, we extended the broadcasts to Ballymena and Roscrea. The total of all the broadcasts reached an astonishing 235,000 individual Facebook users with 89,000 engaging.

As we head into the autumn and the female sales I want to wish all of our breeders success at this time of the year. There is also the National Youth Championships in Carlisle on the 23rd November, so lots to look forward to in the autumn.

Finally, the Stockton Flock will be dispersed at the end of this month. The name W H Sinnett & Sons has been a major player in the Suffolk breed since its formation 1973. Our best wishes go to John and Liz as they start this new chapter of their lives.
