Unidos is a Hispanic community outreach program that provides resources and builds relationships between the Hispanic community, police department and fire depart- ment. Everyone was welcome to attend. About 150 people enjoyed great entertainment, food and games. They also received valuable information from local businesses and vendors ranging from health care providers, Mission Arlington, a dog rescue and real estate experts, among many others. Without the assistance of so many groups, this event would not have been possible. Unidos Fiesta de VeranoThe second annual Unidos Fiesta de Verano was held on Saturday, June 8, at Vandergriff Park. Unidos is a Hispanic community outreach program that provides resources and builds relationships between the Hispanic community, police department and fire depart-ment.

It is the hope that Unidos Fiesta de Verano will con-tinue growing and become an even larger event so the department can reach out to more community members.

ACPAAA Golf Scramble

“She Pal,” hosted an event in Dunlop Park on June 15th. Its purpose is to inspire girls to find the strength to overcome obstacles and see their inner beauty and talent.

Various career women spoke to the girls about believing in themselves. Speakers included a young lady heavily involved in her high school's ROTC program, a special education teacher for the deaf, a flight attendant, a nurse and Officer Kimberly Fretwell. The girls then participated in an obsta-cle course. Supporters of the event cooked and DJ’d for all to enjoy. School supplies were also given out.

The message for all girls is to never give up and keep fighting for their dreams!

The Arlington Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association held their 6th annual ACPAAA Golf Scramble in June. The tour-nament was held at Terra Verde Golf course, an award-winning municipal golf center in south Arlington. The scramble had 90 golfers, including police officers and fire fighters.

This fundraising event takes hundreds of volunteer hours to organize, a year of planning, and dozens of CPA Alumni volunteers to implement the day of the event. This year, as in years past, the alumni hosted a first-class golf scramble. They increased participation and raised more money than in previous years. The 6th annual ACPAAA golf scramble demonstrates how our success as a department is strengthened with the support and partnerships we have with our alumni groups and the members of our community!

On CallA Garden in Their Own BackyardEast Foot Patrol officers were conducting patrol at Crossway Apartments. The children were unaware of the fruit grow-ing in their own complex. Sgt. Robertson, Officer Lee, and Officer Moon taught the children how to identify mulberries. Fruiting mulberries are only ripe for a few weeks each year. Building community relationships is the most rewarding part of our outreach.

Love with LemonsTheresa Ann came all the way from Henderson, Nevada to bring her lemonade stand and spend some time with us. Love With Lemons was start-ed after her family wanted to do some-thing for officers who had been injured in the line of duty. They raise funds for those officers. We wish Theresa Ann all the best in her travels across Texas!

Don’t Leave Children or Pets in the CarThough you may be running into a store for “just a minute,” it’s never safe to leave your child or pet in the car. When the outside temperature is between 80-100 degrees, the temperature inside a parked car can quickly climb to between 130-172 degrees.

Always double check to make sure you have not forgotten your child or pet in the car, and make sure your car is locked so an inquisitive youngster doesn’t become accidentally trapped inside.

In 2018, 52 children died in hot cars, and almost 800 have died since 1998.

Travel TipsIf your car overheats, try to pull off the road as far as you can, turn on your hazard lights, get out of the vehicle if it is safe, and stay away from traffic while waiting for help to arrive.

Before leaving on a trip, let someone know where you are going, your route and when you expect to get there. If you have problem along the way, it will help searchers find you faster.

Teach Your ChildrenAs soon as your children are old enough, which may be younger than you think, they need to know:

• Their full name

• Their address and phone number

• How to call 9-1-1 for help if they have an emergency

Turn Off Your Car, Take Your KeysYes, it’s nice to get into an already cool car on a hot day, but don’t be tempted to leave your car and A/C running. It’s the perfect opportunity for a thief to steal your cool ride.

When The Weather Surprises YouEven in the dog days of summer, there is always the possibility of severe weather.

Keep these tips in mind:

• Turn around, don’t drown. Just 12 inches of fast moving water can sweep a car away.

• Never drive past barriers blocking a road.

• If you see a tornado, drive to a sturdy shelter if you have time. Never park under an overpass. If you are stuck in your car, make sure your seatbelt is on and stay below the windshield and win-dows. Cover your head with a blanket if you have one.

• If it begins to hail, do not stop un-der bridges. This can cause a traf-fic jam and emergency responders will be delayed.
