BERNSTEINSylvia Bernstein died on June 12, 2017 at theAbramson Center for Jewish Life in NorthWales, PA. She was 90. She was born SylviaWeinberg on January 28, 1927 in Phil-adelphia. Her father, Max, was a proud Navyveteran whose family first settled in theUnited States in the 1840s. Her mother, theformer Rebecca Solkov, was born inDinaburg, Russia. Sylvia spent her entire lifein the Philadelphia area. She grew up on the2600 block of S. Alder Street in South Phil-adelphia in the company of numerous exten-ded family members and friends. She gradu-ated from Southern High School and, shortlythereafter, began working for the InsuranceCompany of North America in its eponymousbuilding at 1600 Arch Street, where she mether future husband, the late Albert M.“Sonny” Bernstein. They remained marriedfor 65 years, until his death in 2011. In 1966,Sonny and Sylvia moved from Wynnefield toa house in Merion that remained in the Bern-stein family until 2011. In addition to raisingthree children, Sylvia also founded a marketresearch company that she owned and oper-ated for a number of years. Above all else,Sylvia was a source of unceasing love andselfless devotion to her family. Sylvia waspredeceased by two sisters, Lenora andJeanette. She is survived by her children, Mi-chael (Sherri), Louis (Mary) and Bonnie, andher grandchildren, Sarah Bernstein Solomon(Scott), Emily and David Bernstein, and Mat-thew (Aly Gibson), Paulina and Luke Mar-cucci. She is also survived by her great-grandson, Jerry Solomon. ADELMANIrene P. Adelman, May 29, 2017, age 98, lov-ing wife of the late Joseph. She was prede-ceased by her beloved parents Sarah andRudolph Polya and brother, Joseph L. Polya.Irene was a resident of the Madlyn and Le-onard Abramson Center for Jewish Life since2008. In 2004 the Center honored her at itsAuxiliary's annual tribute luncheon for over35 yrs. of volunteer services dating back towhen she joined the Auxiliary at the Phil-adelphia Geriatric Center (PAG) on the Ab-ramson Center's former Philadelphia cam-pus. Her volunteerism and involvement withthe Auxiliary had continued until 2006, focus-ing in latter years on the Center's library. In2015, Irene was once again honored by theAbramson Center Auxiliary with their firstWoman of the Year award. Irene established2 separate endowments at the Center: a Res-ident Luncheon Endowment Fund and am En-hanced Visitation Endowment Fund. She alsoendowed the Joseph L. Polya MemorialScholarship at Abington High School inmemory of her beloved brother. Irene's con-tinual volunteer work began with the USOduring World War II. Beginning in 1975, as apart of a Volunteer Research Group, she wasan integral part of the York House Southmedical team where she handled medical andlab appointments 2 days each week for ap-proximately 18 yrs. Also, under the auspicesof the Social Services department, Ireneworked with York House tenants and withresidents in the Nursing Home. In past yearsIrene had been a devoted and active memberof Beth Judah Synagogue in Logan and sub-sequently Melrose B'nai Israel Emanuel-El inCheltenham. Irene is survived by nieces,nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews andfriends. ADLERPaul Adler, June 9, 2017, age 94, a monthshort of his 95th birthday. Paul is re-membered as beloved husband of Paulina,cherished father of Esther (Greg) and Bar-bara (Meir), adoring grandfather of Jacob,Adam, Sam, Oren, Tali and Noa, and great-grandfather of Ella and Caden. Paul was bornin Skalat (Ternopol), Poland, now an area ofWestern Galacia, Ukraine. At age 17, he waswitness to the destruction of his town, a jew-ish "shtetl" and was the only member of hisimmediate family to survive the Holocaust.His three younger brothers, Menachim, Leib,and Eli were massacred along with his par-ents in Treblinka. In 1966, he traveled toStuttgart, Germany to testify in the trial thatled to the conviction of former SS officers.Paul emigrated from Poland to Israel in 1957and from Israel to the United States in 1962,first residing in Brooklyn, NY and for the last48 years in Philadelphia. He owned and op-erated a newspaper kiosk in Center Cityacross the street from City Hall. Paul servedas Secretary of the Association of JewishHolocaust Survivors and was awarded theirPerson of the Year award in 1994 in recogni-tion of his dedication. Paul chronicled hissurvival for Steven Speilberg's Film andVideo Archive and for Gratz College Holo-caust Studies Program. BELLDoris Bell, life-long Philadelphia resident, be-loved mother, grandmother, great-grand-mother, aunt, cousin, friend and neighborpassed away in her own home the evening ofJune 7, 2017 at the age of ninety six. Doris(Dora) Braverman arrived September 5,1920, the youngest of eight children born toNew York City transplants, Elizabeth Dworin,seamstress, teacher and lacemaker and elec-trician Harry Braverman, who wired the Vi-enna Opera House. It was an enlightened andlively home where everyone was drawn andwelcomed. Doris married the entrepreneurialactor David Bell in 1941 and together theyraised three daughters, travelled extensivelyand took care of many people. They weremarried for 56 years when her husband suc-cumbed to cancer. Beautiful, warm and ex-uberant, she pulled everyone in with her songand laughter. Doris adored cooing to babiesand reading to young children. Painting was atreasured hobby, and at 94. much to herpleasure and surprise, she sold a large paint-ing! Always on the move, pretty and viva-cious, she looked decades younger, even inher nineties. Doris is survived by her threedaughters, Lois, Sandi and Lisa (DavidBaker), her two granddaughters Alix andHaley Genevieve, and her great granddaugh-ter Mallory Davis Ricci, daughter to her lategrandson, Adam Jan Perry. She was and al-ways will be, unforgettable. A Shiva was heldto honor her memory, on Sunday, June 18th.

BERSA life worth celebrating! Janice S. Bers, age98, died peacefully June 1, 2017 surroundedby loving family. Preceded in death by herhusband, Julian, of almost 60 years. JaniceBers’ good works, successful undertakingsand efforts benefitting the community are le-gendary. Janice’s contribution to the com-munity began in the 1930’s as Camp Direct-or at Camp Council, a summer camp for un-derprivileged children, and continuedthroughout her life. She provided volunteerleadership and fundraising to organizationsincluding her alma mater, the University ofPennsylvania, United Way, Keneseth Israel,Jenkintown Day Nursery, and the AbingtonHospital. Janice and Julian received theUnited Way “50 Year Award” for their deedsand contributions. At the age of 83, Janice re-ceived the “Outstanding Fundraiser of theYear” awarded by the Greater PhiladelphiaChapter of the Association of FundraisingProfessionals. Over 800 people gathered inthe Crystal Tea Room at the WanamakerBuilding in Philadelphia to deservedly honorher. Abington Hospital presented the “MullerCenter’s, Suzanne Roberts Senior of the YearAward” to Janice for exceptional volunteerfundraising leadership for almost half a cen-tury. And, she was the honoree at the mem-orable Abington Hospital, June Fete Gala atthe Union League in Philadelphia which wasreplete with its own Mummer’s Parade.However, she believed her greatest achieve-ment was the love of her husband, family,and friends. She is survived by her childrenWendy Trow-Fox and Remy Fox; Nan Bersand Harry Sears; Andrew Bers; her 3 grand-daughters, and 5 great-grandchildren. CUTLERLeonard Stanley Cutler, a pillar of the Phil-adelphia business and Jewish communitiesdied of natural causes at his Bala Cynwydhome on the morning of May 30, 2017, at theage of 93. He is survived by his wife of al-most seventy years, the former Racine Saul.He is also survived by his three children, Dr.Charles Cutler, Linda Cutler and Carol Cutleras well as their spouses, Dr. Beverly Cutlerand Gregg Young. Leonard had six grand-children (Jenny Cutler, Ali Cutler, StaceySchor, Max Young, Nathaniel Young and LilyYoung) and four great grandchildren. Mr.Cutler was born in West Philadelphia toCharles and Claire Cuter in 1924. In themidst of the Great Depression Charles foun-ded Cutler Dairy Products in what is now So-ciety Hill, as well as Supreme Dairy in Bal-timore, Maryland. In 1943 Leonard gradu-ated from what was then known as Phil-adelphia Military College (now Widener Col-lege) and entered the Army Air Corp, servingwith distinction in the South Pacific. Uponhis honorable discharge from the service heassumed the reins of the family dairy busi-ness, renamed it Cutler Egg Products, Inc.,and ultimately moved its Philadelphiaheadquarters to Sedgely Avenue in NorthPhiladelphia and extended its operation intothe Southeast United States as well as Cent-ral America. While business was important toLeonard Cutler, even more important was hisdevotion to his family and to the Jewish com-munity of Philadelphia. He was a member ofthe congregation of Beth Am Israel since itsfounding in 1925 and, in fact, was a BarMitzvah in its West Philadelphia sanctuary in1937 and again in its relocated Penn Valleysanctuary in 2007 at the age of 83. In 2015he and his wife were honored by the Beth AmIsrael congregation at its 90th anniversarycelebration for his lifelong service and dedic-ation to the Beth Am Israel community. In ad-dition to this bond with Beth Am Israel, Le-onard was also a member of Adath Israel inMerion, where he attended daily minyan untilthe last few months. He was a beloved hus-band, father, grandfather, great grandfatherand friend and was an exemplar of theGreatest Generation. He will be sorelymissed.

DAVISEdgar P. Davis, 89, devoted husband, fatherand grandfather, lost his battle with canceron Monday, June 12, 2017. He passed awaypeacefully in the early morning hours. He issurvived by his loving wife of 54 years,Selma (nee Roseman); his three children,Wendy Pollack (Ted Pollack), Sally, and Mor-ris (Kim Liddle); and seven grandchildren:Kayla, Harrison, Josephine, Luke, Jackson,Lauren, and Brett. A natural storyteller, Edgarloved meeting new people and could quicklyput anyone at ease. His kind face, gentleeyes, and childlike joy in laughter made himseem very open and accessible to anyone. Hedelighted in telling jokes and funny stories --a trait that was an asset when he started a ca-reer in sales. Ultimately, he secured a mar-keting position with the Philadelphia GasWorks, from which he retired in 1989. Afterleaving PGW, he went on to become anaward-winning photographer and photo-journalist. His photos appeared in the Phil-adelphia Inquirer, Main Line Life, and otherpublications. A passionate jazz fan, Edgarnever tired of listening to the classic record-ings that filled his younger years. Among hisfavorites were Jimmy Durante’s “Won’t YouCome Home, Bill Bailey?” and Louis Arm-strong’s “St. James Infirmary Blues.” Hischildren and friends fondly recall his love forsinging, and visitors to his bedside in recentweeks often heard him sing along with Dur-ante and Armstrong as well as songs bySinatra, Ellington, and more. Edgar andSelma traveled extensively, visiting Hawaii (afavorite destination), Puerto Rico, Alaska,Montana, Washington, and other locales overthe years. Edgar met Selma in Atlantic Cityover Labor Day weekend in 1961 and theywere married 14 months later. Edgar wasborn in Philadelphia and was a proud gradu-ate of Central High School (Class 184) in1945 and the University of Pennsylvania in1949. He lived in the city until 1969, whenhe moved his growing family to Bala Cynwyd.Funeral Services were Wednesday June 14th

GERSHMANRevelle Gershman was born in Philadelphiato Joseph and Bessie Shambelan. She spentpart of her formative years in Richmond, Vir-ginia, and Scranton, Pennsylvania before herfamily settled back in Philadelphia. Aftergraduating from Girls High in Philadelphia,she worked for the City Parks Department,rescuing a few kittens from drowning alongthe way. She also worked at Bell Telephoneduring the day to put herself through TempleUniversity in the evening. When she neededto learn a language to graduate, at the insist-ence of a professor she took off for Europe in1952 to learn French. After traveling aroundEurope and studying at the Sorbonne in Par-is she returned to the USA, with plans to re-turn. Her return to France was delayed whenshe met her husband to be, Louis, and theywere married within six months. She did fi-nally return seventeen years later, and therest of her life was marked by repeated visitsto Europe especially France and Switzerland.At the beginning of her marriage, she taughthigh school history despite majoring in Eng-lish in college. Her teaching career came toan end as the family grew. In addition toraising three children and watching twograndchildren grow up, Revelle found time tovolunteer in a variety of ways. From her act-ive life at Main Line Reform Temple whereshe was president of the sisterhood and amember of the Temple board of trustees tohelping work on political campaigns to hermost recent work with MANNA – the Metro-politan Nutrition Network Aids Alliance –which prepares and delivers meals to peoplesuffering from aids. She received an awardfor being their longest serving volunteer forher 25 years of service. Revelle’s world wasfilled with people from all over the world andall walks of life. Her house was like an inter-national hotel. All who came were welcomedlike her children. She kept in touch with all -including a woman from her first Europeantrip in the 1950’s, who became one of herclosest and dearest friends, to the newfriends she made in the last few years. Rev-elle is survived by her three children Jo (hus-band Daniel), Gary and Ian and her twograndsons, Gabriel and Riley. Creating was as important to her asbreathing. In her 35 years of teaching art,primarily in the Philadelphia School System,she prized the enthusiasm reflected in thefaces of her students from 5 to 85 when cre-ativity captured their spirit. Nina’s art is herlegacy. She wanted people who experiencedher work to smile, to be uplifted, to find theirown interpretation. Her training included theTyler School of Art where she received herB.S. and M.A., along with the PennsylvaniaAcademy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts,Fleischer Art Memorial, Cheltenham Art Cen-ter, Allen’s Lane Art Center and the Phil-adelphia Museum of Art. Nina was raised in aKosher household and was a graduate ofAkiba Hebrew AcademyShe was imbued witha reverence for Israel and visited 19 times.Learning piano helped arouse Nina's pas-sion for music. KAHNSidney Joshua Kahn passed away peacefullysurrounded by family at age 85 on June 3,2017 (10 Sivan 5777) in Sacramento, CA.Born in Philadelphia to Arthur and Rose (néeMoskowitz) Kahn, Sidney attended CentralHigh School (192nd class) and the Phil-adelphia College of Pharmacy and Science,graduating in pharmacy in 1954. After com-pleting a residency at Thomas Jefferson Hos-pital in Philadelphia, he joined the U.S. Pub-lic Health Service in 1955, working amongthe Native American communities in SouthDakota until 1957. Sid had a long and distin-guished career as a hospital pharmacist andadministrator, including as Director of Phar-macy Services at Albert Einstein Medical Cen-ter (Northern Division) and then Assistant Ex-ecutive Director there. From his marriage toMartha T. First in 1954, Sidney had four chil-dren: Reuven (Carina Grossman), Randi (Ale-jandro Cadji), Sara (Yossi Shapiro) and Liora(Dave Plotkin). Martha and Sid built a warmand supportive home, imbued with Jewishand humanistic values, along with muchlaughter. He remarried Judy Dlugach in1986, then moving to Lititz, PA; in 2003 theyrelocated to Walnut Creek CA. He also leavesbehind seven grandchildren (Ohad, Yael,Shira, Raz, Isaac, Zeev and Autumn), and onegreat grandchild (Ya’ara). He is survived byhis sister Lois Ruben of Los Angeles and waspredeceased by his sister Freida Capone.Sidney Kahn was a charismatic, much-re-spected and well-liked administrator andleader, blessed with a great sense of humor,technical expertise and a flair for storytellingand crafts, along with wide intellectual in-terests. He was a dedicated family man andan exemplary father to his children, helpingto instill in them a strong sense of Jewishidentity, and responsibility to themselves,their family and the wider community. Wellloved by friends and family, he will be greatlymissed.

GLICKSadly, Irving “Myer” Glick passed awaypeacefully on Sunday, May 28, 2017.He wasborn in Blonie, a suburb of Warsaw in Po-land. He was the sole Holocaust survivor ofthe family of 6 siblings and parents. He wasin the uprising of the Warsaw Ghetto as wellas the concentration camps of Majdanek andAuschwitz-Birkenau. For many years hespoke of his experiences to children of allages, as well as adults. He was the recipientof the Miles Lerman Holocaust EducationAward for his dedication to keeping alive thememory of the six million Jews who per-ished. He was the owner of Tri-City Lumberin Vineland and an active member of Beth Is-rael Synagogue for many years. He served onthe Board of Directors, was a member of theMen’s Club, sang in the synagogue choir andwas the shofar blower for the High Holidaysfor many years. He was also a member ofB’nai Brith, the United States Holocaust Mu-seum in Washington, DC and a proud Ha-dassah Associate. He was honored severaltimes by the Bat Ami chapter of Hadassah forhis involvement in their projects and alsohonored by the Southern New Jersey Regionof Hadassah. He was an accomplished ama-teur artist in all media, including stainedglass. He had exhibits at the Vineland PublicLibrary as well as Cumberland County Col-lege. He had won several ribbons at the Seni-or Art Show, both locally and at the statelevel. He loved taking videos of his childrenand grandchildren. Three years ago hemoved to Marlton, NJ with his wife to becloser to his children. He became a memberof Beth El congregation in Voorhees. He issurvived by his loving wife Nella (Distenfeld)of 58 years, Children Eli Glick (Robin) of La-fayette Hill, PA, Ethel Rosenberg, of MountLaurel, NJ & Susan Cancell, of Marlton NJ;grandchildren Jason & Evan Rosenberg andSamantha & Alexander Cancell, sister-in-lawYetta Bergstein and several nieces, nephewsand cousins. He was a pion-eer real estate professional specializing inapartment buildings and personal care cen-ters. He graduated Penn State University andwas a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi. While atOlney High School and Penn State, Bob wasa member of the varsity track team that wonthe ICAAA championship. He was the starhigh jumper, long jumper and pole vaulterand placed 2nd at the Penn Relays. Bobproudly served as an officer of the army as a2nd Lieutenant for 4 years. In 1961 Bob’s150th armored calvary was recalled whenEast Germany built the Berlin Wall. He en-joyed playing golf, tennis, racquetball, bas-ketball, skiing and sailing. He was honoredwith the Jewish Basketball Hall of FameAward in 2011. Bob enjoyed playing the pi-ano and writing his own songs. He com-posed over 50 songs on the piano…all self-taught. Mr. Schaefferalso consulted on many charitable projectsincluding for the Ford Foundation, PrincetonUniversity, and the Opportunities Industrializ-ation Corporation. In addition, he advised onthe Bedford Stuyvesant restoration; redevel-opment of Boston’s Faneuil Hall; Portland,Maine; Saratoga, NY; Bethlehem, PA and oth-er cities. Her sib-lings were Bess (nee Zevin) Weiss (dec)Molly (nee Zevin) Schwartz and Albert Zevin.Rose was well-known for her extensive workin the real estate business, first with her latehusband Jacob’s Real Estate Brokerage in theKensington and Allegheny area then in Ox-ford Circle with the firms of Harry D. Tobenand Herman Cohen. Later she became a li-censed Insurance Agent and tax accountantworking tirelessly to raise her 2 sons. Rosetraveled extensively to the Far Fast and was aloving supporter of the State of Israel visitingthere several times and was an early mem-ber of Pioneer Women (now Na’amat USA) atthe founding of the State of Israel and an avidsupporter of the Simon Weisenthal Center.Rose was the beloved matriarch of the Stein-berg Zevin family and will be greatly missedfor her inspiration and wisdom she impartedto her many family members and friends.Graveside services were held at Mt. JacobCemetery where her indominable sprit is nowreunited with her beloved parents Samueland Jenny (nee Zevin), her sister Bess andher son Stephen. WEXLERGinia Davis Wexler was born and raised inPhiladelphia. She died on June 7, 2017, atthe age of 99. She was the oldest of five chil-dren born to Hilda and Meyer Davis. Her fath-er, Meyer, was the conductor, and her moth-er was a pianist and composer. Ginia's uncle,the conductor Pierre Monteux, was marriedto her mother's sister. Her family receivednumerous visiting actors and musicians intheir home and Ginia grew up surrounded bymusic of all kinds. In 1968, she married Mor-ris M. Wexler, who died in 1993. She is sur-vived by her stepson, Lewis Weller, who livesin Philadelphia, and niece, Mavis MelissaDavis, who lives in Maine, as well as other re-latives. She wrote that she wants to be re-membered "as an artist and a presenter ofartists to children and adults. She was acommunicator and a concerned human be-ing towards all the problems of humanity.She believed in one world, no war; peaceamong all peoples." Gina was once asked"What gives your life its purpose and mean-ing?" She responded, "The beauty in music,art , nature. The kindness of people. The joyin having a pet. The smiles and joy of chil-dren. The possibility of peace in this beauti-ful world we inhabit. All mankind living inpeace." Her career as a singer embraced op-era, recital, orchestra appearances, theatreand folk music. Some of her performanceshave been with the Royal Belgian Opera inBrussels, the Pittsburgh and London Sym-phonies, "Call Me Mister" on Broadway andmany New York recitals. Gina traveled aroundthe world and collected songs in many lands.She sang in 22 languages. She performed forchildren as an ambassador for the U.S. In-formation Service under its Cultural Ex-change Program in India and Africa.Ginia'smaternal family has roots in Bar Harbor, andshe owns a farmstead in Sullivan, Maine. Itwas here every summer that she organizedfree performances for children in her ownBarn Theatre, and hired various entertainersfor the enjoyment of the children. She was anoriginal benefactor of The Grand Theater. Shedirected the Performing Arts for ChildrenSeries that took place at the Grand. She alsosponsored scholarships for the arts for stu-dents at Sumner High School and MountainView Middle School. She was a supporterand Board member of the Pierre MonteuxSchool for Conductors and Orchestra Musi-cians in Hancock, Maine, as well as an activemember of the Sullivan-Sorrento HistoricalSociety. A Memorial Gathering will be held onSaturday, August 19, 2017 at 1 p.m. in thePierre Monteux Forest Studio, 42 MelodyLane, in Hancock, Maine.
