A DECADE OF DISCOVERY, 19 5 3-19 63CHECKLIST OF CRITICISM, WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS' POETRY

LINDA WELSHIMER WAGNERWith the publication of PatersonIV in 1950, criticism about the poetryof William Carlos Williams increasedin quantity and, usually, in validity.Much earlier commentary had cen-tered on Williams' subject matter, avoiding his technique for lack ofterminology. Early criticism was also

often invalidated as Williams contin-used his poetic experimentation, inthe hope of finding a means to re-cre-ate his contemporary locale in hispoem. Most critics today think thatWilliams achieved his goal most suc-cessfully in his last four books-TheDesert Music, Journey to Love, Pat-erson V, and Pictures from Brueghel. Many of the items in this checklistdeal either with these major books orwith Williams' poetry as a whole.Adams, Phoebe.
