“United Way has made it easy for me.”

We have a hub on our website where organizations can post their volunteer opportunities. People are then able to browse through projects, sort it by town or interest, and pick one that inspires them.

Tammy spent the morning at Sunrise Cafe, operated by volunteers and Liberty Community Services. The program serves breakfast to more than 100 hungry and homeless people every morning. Tammy volunteered in the kitchen, cracking eggs and washing trays.

At United Way of Greater New Haven, we share a monthly email newsletter, and that’s how Tammy found out about this meaningful volunteer project.

“It makes me feel grateful. It gives me a different perspective,” said Tammy.

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVETammy Stemen moved from a quiet suburb on the shoreline to downtown New Haven several years ago. Why the change? Her youngest child went to college, and suddenly she had an empty nest.

She wanted to be closer to her job as a Environmental Health and Safety program manager at Yale University. So she gave up the commute, her car, and now she walks everywhere.

Since moving to the Elm City, Tammy has also wanted to be closer to the community. She’s been looking for a way to volunteer, but she didn’t know where to start or who to contact.

That is, until United Way connected her to a volunteer project, serving meals to people who are hungry and homeless.

United Way provides volunteer opportunities for those looking to get involved. Whether someone wants to get their hands dirty for a clean up project, serve meals to families, or read to kindergarteners, there are dozens of opportunities to choose from throughout the year.
