Section I, "Geographic FisheryRegions," lists Federal and Stateoffices dealing with fisheries, boating,and fishing-related matters for allcoastal states, Great Lakes states, andselected landlocked states. Data isgiven on state fisheries and alliedagencies, councils, and private groups,the state legislative bodies dealing withsuch matters, and commercial fisheriesstatistics. Selected fisheries publica­tions are listed.

Section II, "Organizations," listscoastal commissions and associationsof aquaculturists, boatbuilders, com­mercial fishermen and seafood proces­sors, environmentalists, labor groups,marina operators, marine equipmentmanufacturers and professionals,marine law enforcers, oceanographers,researchers, sport fishermen, andtrade groups.

RESEARCH METHODSFOR CORAL REEFS

Coral Reefs: Research Methodshas been published by Unesco, Paris,France, as the fifth volume in its seriesof monographs on oceanographicmethodology to encourage the acceler­ation of coral reef research. Basictechniques are given for scientificstudies of the quantitative ecology ofcoral reefs and effective methods arerecommended.

The 58 I-page volume has 43 contri­butions broken into three parts: Part I,"Morphology and Structure"; Part II,"Biotic Distribution"; and Part Ill,"Energy and Nutrient Flux." Chaptersin Part I detail reef terminology,mapping techniques, aerial photo­graphy and other remote sensingtechniques, mechanical analysis of reefsediments, shallow core drilling,radiometric dating of coral reefs, sealevel measurement techniques, andmore.

Part II includes chapters on datacollection and recording; quantitativebenthic ecology; plotless, transect, andphytosociologic methods of reef mea­surement; and the study of sponges,Nemertina, reef fishes, and soft bottomcommunities. Part JIJ includes meth­ods of measuring coral growth, pro­ductivity, photosynthesis and respira­tion, and methods for determiningchemical elements.

Roberts begins with a discussion ofthe aquatic environment and how itinfluences disease, then progresses toanatomy and physiology of teleosts,their pathophysiology and systematicpathology. Other chapters discussimmunology, neoplasia, virology,parasitology, bacteriology, mycology,and nutritional pathology. Miscellan­eous noninfectious diseases (i.e.,problems related to water tempertaure,nitrogen supersaturation, traumaticinjuries, genetics, etc.) are brieflydiscussed. Brazil's Fish CatchUp 5 Percent in 1978

Brazilian fishermen caught anestimated 884,000 metric tons (t) offishand shellfish in 1978, a 5 percentincrease over the 843,000 t I landed in1977. Government estimates indicatethat Brazilian marine fishermen couldcatch between 1.4 and I.6 million t offish and freshwater fishermen andaquaculturists could produce between0.8 and 4.0 million t. The country'sThird National Fisheries DevelopmentPlan (PNDP) will be completed in1979 and the fishefies agency, SUD­EPE. i~ now planning the FourthPNDP.

.I. Rodriguez and J Silva of the U.S.Embassy in Brasilia have prepared a34-page report on the Brazilian fishingindustry. The report includes informa­tion on catch, vessels, fishermen,processing, marketing, developmentprograms. tuna, shrimp, whales,lobster, catfish, sardines, exports, and

Tokyo Wholesale FishMarket Data Released

The Tokyo Metropolitan Govern­ment has published a Io-page brochureentitled 'The Tokyo Central Whole­sale Market In Brief, 1978". Themarket, which has II regional and 7branch markets in the Tokyo Metro­politan Area, handled over 830,000 t offresh and processed marine productsworth $2.6 billion in 1977.

The brochure includes a brief historyof the Market, its organization, adistribution flow chart, a floor plan,statistical data on transactions, and themain features of its regional andbranch markets. Ecuador's FishingIndustry, 1977-78

Ecuadorian fishermen caught 475,000metric tons (t) of fish and shellfish in1977, more than a 50 percent increaseover the 315,000 t caught in 1976. Mostof the increase was due to the increasedlandings of Pacific thread herring("pinchagua") and other species usedprincipally for reduction to fish meal.The Government is now consideringthe imposition of catch quotas.

About 8,600 t of shrimp was landedin 1976. Tuna landings increased from25,000 t in 1976 to 28,000 t in 1977. Anumber of foreign companies andgovernments (including the UnitedStates, .lapan, Poland, France, theUnited Kingdom, and Spain) havecontacted Ecuadorian officials con­cerning various fishery developmentprojects. In addition, funding has

recently been obtained for a $17.8million fisheries project which will beadministered by the state-ownedcompany, EPNA.

The U.S. Consulate General inGuayaquil, Ecuador, has submitted adetailed 4O-page report on Ecuadorianfisheries. The report includes sectionson Ecuador's Fishing DevelopmentProgram, major recent developments,foreign interests in Ecuadorian fisher­ies, plans to build new ports, the State­owned fishing company (EPNA), anda section on the major fisheries(shrimp, tuna, pelagic, and demersalspecies). ROK, Australian FisheryMarket Reports Printed

The U.S. Embassy in Seoul, Repub­lic of Korea, and the U.S. ConsulateGeneral in Sydney, Australia, haveprepared market reports on fishinggear and equipment for South Koreaand Australia, respectively. The 13­page report on Korea states that thebest potential for U.S. sales of fishingequipment and vessels is in SouthKorea's deep-sea fisheries sector whichis slated to expand considerably by1981.

The 52-page market report onAustralia states that limited opportuni­ties exist for U.S. suppliers of electron­ic fish finding equipment, communica­tion devices, and fish processingmachinery, and suggests that interestedU.S. firms might want to participateand display equipment at the FishExpo Exhibition to be held in Perth,26-29 August 1979.
