Pianofforte gives you the chance to fi nd out more about our composers, hear viewpoints on piano teaching issues and keep up-to-date with our latest news and publications. Many of our best-loved educational writers contribute, including the ever-prolifi c Pam Wedgwood, concert pianist Joanna MacGregor and renowned educationlist Paul Harris.

Features in this issue include John Kember writing about how he approached his new Pop Piano Playerbooks, Elissa Milne giving us an insight into her day, and a postcard from Pam Wedgwood, enjoying some time in New Zealand!

Sadly, 2009 saw the death of the renowned composer, editor and piano teacher Christine Brown, who passed away aged 78. Christine dedicated her life to teaching piano and inspiring musicians of all ages, and there is a full obituary and tribute to her on pages 4 and 5.

Whatever your level and style of teaching, we’re sure you’ll fi nd something to interest you in Pianofforte. Dame Fanny Waterman marks a special birthday with a year of achievements!Earlier this year saw Dame Fanny Waterman DBE, co-author of the best-selling Waterman/Harewood piano series, Me and My Pianomark the milestone occasion of her nintieth birthday. With book sales of over two million copies, and a hectic schedule of teaching, masterclasses and adjudicating, Dame Fanny is showing no signs of slowing down just yet!

Fanny Waterman is a living legend in the world of music, a teacher of international renown, an internationally-respected clinician and adjudicator, and is the author of over 30 books. Alongside her role of Chairman and Artistic Director of the prestigious Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, which she founded in 1961, Dame Fanny has recently taken on the role of President of the Harrogate International Festival, and earlier this year was made an honourary member of the Royal Philharmonic Society, a prestigious award in recognition of her services to music.

2010 looks to be another good year for Dame Fanny, as she will be making a welcome return to China and South Korea, where she will again dazzle her audience with her insight and experience in a series of masterclasses. She will also be a member of the jury of the Bach Competition in Leipzig, and the World Expo in Shanghai.

Travel plans for 2011 include adjudicating at the UNISA Piano Competition in South Africa.

An audience closer to home will have the chance to hear Dame Fanny when she appears on an upcoming edition of Desert Island Discs on Radio 4 in July. Dame Fanny is keeping secret her choices for a book and luxury which she would take to the desert island, but her musical choices will include works by Schumann, Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart and her friend, Benjamin Britten.

Ann Bryant at SMA Conference 2010

Composer and children’s author Ann Bryant will be presenting at the Schools Music Association annual conference in Nottingham in October, focusing on her Stories with Classical Music series. Faber Music is sad to report the death of the renowned composer, editor and piano teacher Christine Brown, who has died of cancer at the age of 78. Christine dedicated her life to teaching piano and inspiring musicians of all ages. Born and bred in Yorkshire, Christine went to London at the age of sixteen where she had been awarded a Foundation Scholarship to the Royal College of Music. On returning to Yorkshire, she won the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra Concerto Soloists competition but soon decided that it was in the fi eld of teaching that she wanted to dedicate her career. She taught in various schools in the area including Woodhouse Grove School near Bradford, Harrogate Ladies College in Harrogate and later as a lecturer at Bretton College near Wakefi eld. Eventually she took the courageous step to “go solo” and moved back to Leeds as a private teacher. She soon built up a successful private practice with pupils of all ages.

As a talented composer herself she was able to write attractive pieces to help pupils in the early stages of learning and these were published as a series of albums. A sight reading series followed entitled Playat Sight and this was recently updated by Christine and republished under the same title by Faber in one book which has received high critical acclaim.

Christine was one of the fi rst people to join EPTA in its fl edgling stages and she set up and ran the Yorkshire branch for fi fteen years. She also became a member of the ISM and was the warden in Yorkshire. Christine continued to support both organizations throughout her life. Her smiling face and brightly attentive eyes were a well recognized sight at EPTA meetings and conferences where other delegates were always amazed by her boundless energy. She gave many talks both at home and abroad on a diverse range of subjects, from “strategies for sight-reading” to “the piano works of Purcell”. One of her great passions was the music of Bartok and she was considered an expert in this fi eld. She met Bartok’s son Peter in the course of her research and even started to learn Hungarian in the quest for further knowledge. In 1988 she was commissioned by Boosey & Hawkes to write Mikrokosmos: A Guide for Piano Teachers to coincide

with their defi nitive new edition of Bartok’s Mikrokosmos.

Early on in her career, Christine recognized the value of ensemble playing. She herself formed a group, the Chandos Quartet, comprising of herself and three other pianists. They performed concerts across the Yorkshire region of works for four pianists at two pianos and had a piece especially written for them by Graham Fitkin entitled Sciopathy. Christine herself published two elementary duet albums, arrangements of Folk Tunes from Around the World. She was also editing a collection of duets for Faber Music in 2009 when her cancer was diagnosed. She managed to complete the collection despite being very ill and this has just been published under the title RealRepertoire Duets.

Editing was another fi eld in which Christine was able to bring her considerable expertise. The combination of her wealth of knowledge of music and of teaching the pieces herself meant that she was an informed and sensitive editor. She herself was keen to have some of her favourite teaching repertoire gathered together and published as a legacy for future generations. This has led to the highly successful fi ve albums in the much-respected RealRepertoire series plus a further three albums of Real Repertoire Studies with Faber Music.

Christine was always open to new ideas and not afraid to embrace modern technology. When digital pianos started to appear on the market, she was quick to recognize their potential as a teaching tool and was employed by Yamaha to tour with them in the Far East, demonstrating how their Clavinova range could be used in teaching and to aid pupils in their practice at home. Some years ago she bought herself a computer which enabled her to print her own music and set up her own website where many of her talks and publications are listed.

Enjoyment was a key factor in Christine’s teaching. She was so enthusiastic herself and had such great passion and commitment that her pupils could not fail to share her joy. During school holidays she would frequently hold “Play Days” for her younger pupils, giving them the opportunity to meet together in groups and play games

designed to develop their musicianship and knowledge of music theory in a fun and accessible way. Her pupils were always highly successful at festivals and competitions where they stood out because of their excellent technique and thorough preparation. Many of her ex-pupils kept in touch with her long after they had left the area and would still come back to visit her to ask for her advice or give them a lesson if they had a performance or music exam coming up.

Christine herself never married and her pupils were like her family to her. A few years ago she set up the “Christine Brown Trust for Young Musicians”, a charitable organization enabling young musicians in the Yorkshire region who are in fi nancial hardship to apply for funding to help them to meet the expenses involved in learning a musical instrument. She was delighted when anapplication was implemented in 2008 so that she could see it come to fruition.

Christine’s insatiable thirst for knowledge led her to studying extra degrees in subjects such as philosophy of education and in law. She gained a music degree at York University ten years ago. Her bungalow was crammed full of books on all kinds of subjects as well as a huge collection of CDs and piano music. She had a “sight reading library” containing over 600 books which her pupils were able to borrow freely from to encourage them to play a wide range of music. “Her bungalow is like a power house of music and intellect” was how a colleague recently summed it up!

Christine’s pupils will always remember her warm personality and the encouragement she gave them. Perhaps this quote from George Bernard Shaw best sums up Christine’s approach to life and her legacy to us all: “Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.”

Exploring the Piano! PianoWorld series expands with two exciting new repertoire books from Joanna MacGregor

First published in 2000 and immediately described as a ‘tutor worthy of the new millennium’ (Piano Magazine), PianoWorld quickly received the warmest praise from teachers, parents and their kids. Radically different from its often ‘stuffy’ predecessors, PianoWorld is a story-based, child-centred tutor where the energy and vitality just bursts off the page! To complement the tutors there are now two repertoire books added to the series. We spoke to Joanna MacGregor to fi nd out more...

In the PianoWorld tutor books, we follow the adventures of crazy cartoon characters such as Ned, Grumper, Crash Harry, the Scherzo Sisters and their friends. Will we be accompanied by the same characters in the repertoire books?

Defi ntely, the whole Pianoworld gang are there. I grew very fond of them, and Grumper in particular was a big hit with children. So I’ve written tunes that refl ect the characters – Ned’s Monday Morning Blues, Grumper’s Hot Gospel, and of course something anarchic for Crash Harry.

Why did you decide the time was right for two more books, and how do they support the original series?

Well I kept on getting asked, by parents and children, for more music to play! So it seemed like a good idea to write some repertoire books that support the Pianoworld books two and three, and offer some complementary music. The styles and standards are very similar.

You’re well-known for your broad musical interest in both your performances and your compositions. Is this diversity refl ected in the music in the new PianoWorld books?

Certainly – it’s very important to me to include a range of styles. So in these two books I’ve included gospel and blues, jazz and rumba, folksongs and little classical arrangements. There’s even a very improvised piece at the end of Book 1 (Sun, Moon and Stars) and a little duet to fi nish Book 2 (Song for Freddy). Freddy, by the way, is the baby son of a friend of mine – I thought I’d write a soothing lullaby for him.

Did you fi nd it challenging to write in so many different styles at a level suitable for pre-Grade 1 players?

Yes, but it’s a good challenge. There’s a real discipline involved in writing music within certain parameters, in creating music that’s rich enough to practice over and over, without it becoming boring. You can play jazzy harmonies with just a few notes, and as long as you know how to count up to three, play lilting 5/4 rhythms. I always think of someone practicing my little pieces: I want to make them satisfying both to listen to, and to ‘feel’ under the fi ngers.

Apart from writing these new books, you’re also extremely busy and well known as a performer. What have you been involved in recently, and do you think your performing background helps you in writing for children who may aspire to become performing musicians themselves?

Well, recently I’ve been writing a lot of music for myself and orchestras: I’m just about to premiere some orchestral arrangements of Deep South music, with the jazz saxophonist Andy Sheppard and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. I’ve also been performing a lot of

Bach – his D minor and F minor concertos, and the Goldberg Varia-tions, which I recorded in Salzburg, and is coming out in March.

I spend a lot of my time touring – I’ve just come back from Mexico, where I played with the Britten Sinfonia (Bach, Stravinsky and Piazzolla) and gave solo recitals. Performing is interesting, because it puts you in touch with audiences: you fi nd out how to communicate, how to put programmes together that are illuminating, how to make connections between different styles. And of course I meet people all the time – young people come round to say hello, sometimes wanting me to sign their Pianoworld books! I’m always very happy to see them; I love writing music for them. I recently went to hear Fado singers, after a recital in Lisbon, so watch out – Fado, the soulful music from Portugal, might appear in the next Pianoworld books.

Jamie jazzes up lessons Lessons on how to play jazz and pop styles from the talented singer-songwriter Jamie Cullum

How would your pupils like to play piano like Jamie Cullum? Now they can learn from Jamie himself throughout these six lessons on his most popular songs, discovering the secrets of his technique and style.

Jamie has been working alongside former School’s Secretary Ed Balls in a government-backed scheme to get more youngsters playing. The Year of Music, a national project from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, aims to encourange children and young people across England to take part in more music-related activities. The year began in September 2009 and will continue to run throughout the academic year 2009/10.

The Year of Music campaign is also being supported by Lily Allen, guitarist Slash, Vanessa Mae and Dannii Minogue, plus many more. Mr Balls called on schools and local authorities to make a major effort to get more young people into music, so that by 2011 more than two million primary school pupils will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument.

He said: “I want to create a generation of talented performers who can sing, dance, play instruments and fl y the fl ag for Great Britain.Music is at the very heart of British popular culture – it’s what kids talk about, it’s what they aspire to. It’s fantastic that TV talent shows like X Factor attract millions of viewers each week, but young people need to know that they can only become stars by mastering the basics when they’re young and by learning about a range of music – from classical to country. This is exactly why we need world class music education in schools.”

Jamie hopes that his new book, Piano with Jamie Cullum, will help inspire pupils to take up the instrument. The book contains lesson plans for six of Jamie’s favourite songs, including hit singles I’m All Over It (The Pursuit album) and Photograph (Catching Tales album), and comes complete with a CD of backing tracks and with further online resources availableto download for group playing.

A Postcard from PamPam Wedgwood writes to us from a not-so-small North Island New Zealand!

The multi-talented composer, teacher, arranger and performer Pam Wedgwood has written and collaborated on more than 100 books. Her piano books, including the best-selling Jazzin’ About and Up-Grade! series are now a staple part of many young pianists’ repertoire and are frequently set on exam, festival and contest syllabuses.

On November 7th 2009 I packed my very large suitcase and set off for a 6-month

vacation to New Zealand. During the previous year I had undergone chemotherapy for

my cancer (non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma), which had left my mind and body in need of a

little rejuvenation. A change of life for a short time might just do the trick. As my son

Olly and his wife Lee-Anne had immigrated to New Zealand 3 months earlier it seemed

the perfect place to go and have an adventure. Also the thought of missing an English

winter really spurred me into action!

I have now been here for a month and am staying in Manukau West Auckland. I have been lucky enough to

find a beautiful place called Totara Lodge. It is a guesthouse in the middle of 600 acres of parkland. The

view from bedroom window is something to die for and I will treasure it forever. The house backs on to the

botanical gardens, which is full of lush palms and many species of trees and birdlife. This is a great start to

my adventure.

As well as having a vacation I am hoping to be inspired to write some new compositions. I have an

electronic keyboard, which I have linked to my laptop and have already put a few ideas down. I will also be

giving a few workshops whilst I am here which have been arranged in association with “Piano Traders” of

Auckland who have been more than very helpful. I’m looking forward to meeting other musicians and hearing

about their teaching and what they would like to see in the market place. It’s a great way to stimulate new

thoughts and ideas for future repertoire.

I am here for another week then it’s off to Hawkes Bay to look after a friend’s house whilst they are on

vacation. They have a music studio and a grand piano – JOY! I will there for about 5 weeks and hope to

do some cycling around the vineyards and of course sample a few of New Zealand’s finest vines! I will also

spend Christmas here with Olly and Lee-Anne.

A day in the life...Elissa Milne gives us an insight into her life

Elissa Milne is one of Australia’s leading composers and teachers, and regularly leads workshops on contemporary approaches to piano teaching and educational repertoire. She started composing at the age of six and went on to study composition at the University of Auckland, and performance studies and education at the University of Sydney, whilst developing her teaching career. Elissa has written over 100 educational piano pieces, several of which have been set on the Trinity College London and Australian Music Examination Board piano syllabuses.

There’s really no typical day in my life, I’ve realised as I’ve been thinking about writing this for Pianofforte, but maybe that’s true of any piano teacher who is also a stay-at-home parent:

Midnight: my two-and-three-quarters year old son creeps into my bed, and can’t be persuaded to return to his own. We snuggle down, quietly singing some songs for a while.

5.30am: I am startled awake by someone rattling at the front door; my husband is organising his golf clubs for his last game of his holidays.

8.15am: Tom and I wake up and we play word games still lying in bed.

10am: Breakfast, bathroom, getting dressed, and Tom’s obligatory morning piano performance (involving the full range of the keyboard, a wide range of dynamics, and most of Tom’s body parts – yes, that means feet, too) all complete.

10.20am: Tom is now happily playing with his grandparents (our next-door neighbours) and I’m fulfi lling my one and only New Year’s Resolution: I get on the treadmill.

11.30am: With Tom and my mum now down at the playground, I pack my laptop and head off to get my hair coloured. I’m doing seminars with piano teachers around Australia next week, so I’m sprucing up. While the colour is working so am I, tapping away on my laptop while the other hair salon clients fl ick through Harper’s Bazaar,Gourmet Traveller and Hello.

2pm: Back home, and the handout for the seminar is about half-done. I will be talking about how to choose the right examination repertoire for your students. The Australian Music Examination Board has a huge syllabus, with about 100 pieces at each grade level! I’m putting together sample programmess for the handout, and I need to play the pieces through on the piano.

4pm: I really have to send this article off to Laura at Faber before she gets to work (8pm Sydney time). But…we are out of groceries, so I zip off to the shops.

5.45pm: The dinner/bath/bed routine. While my husband supervises the bath I check online to see what’s been happening on Twitter, on Facebook (I’ve recently had two lovely conversations with piano teachers on facebook about my piece, Mozzie),checking out activity on my blog (I like to approve comments as quickly as possible to keep the conversation going), and fi nally my emails. There’s an urgent query about a discrepancy between a recording and the fi nal proof of the matching publication that are going to press here in Australia at the end of next week. I spend about 40 minutes comparing what we’ve done in other volumes in the series to work out the best solution.

8.15pm: My son is still awake, so I abandon the idea of getting the dishes done. More song singing.

9.45pm: Finally, Tom’s asleep, and I can attend to this description of what a day in the life of a composer looks like. And it’s at this point that I wryly realise that I haven’t written a single bar of music.

When I was asked to follow up the two JazzPiano Player books with similar ones, following the same format, but using more up to date ‘pop’ material I must admit to one or two doubts. These were amplifi ed when a kind person from the offi ce sent me 2 compilation CDs containing songs they thought would be suitable. They had obviously guessed – and quite correctly too – that some of the songs on the list may not be too familiar! However, I began to warm to the idea.

As, over time, a list gradually developed I began to recognise rather more of the song titles than I had expected, and many that I was keen to include. Others too began to grow on me as I began to try to turn these popular songs into playable piano solos. Having been very much in my ‘comfort zone’ with the likes of Cole Porter, Harold Arlen and George Gershwin, much of this was new territory and it was quite a while before I began to see the merits and slowly to begin to respect the work and music of some of the more recent songwriter/singers.

I began with the ones I felt familiar with and remembered, and the fi rst of these was Music by John Miles. It was not diffi cult to see the pianistic qualities in this song. Always on My Mind and Home were good for me too, being a fan of Michael Bublé. TheLook of Love (Bacharach) and From Both Sides Now

(Joni Mitchell) were also from a familiar period and I knew them well. I was encouraged too by the enthusiasm shown by some of my teenage students who were the fi rst to get their hands on the arrangements! I thought that they were a good testing ground for which songs they knew from an earlier generation. I was thrilled to be able to get my hands on Lionel Richie’s Easy and Stevie Wonder’s Isn’t She Lovely, both of which I thought would be popular additions.

The discoveries which I found both challenging and enjoyable were while working on See the Day – a beautiful melody that lends itself so readily as a piano solo, and Jesus to a Child – the George Michael song. It took a while to get the feel of it, but it was this song in particular that stayed longest in my memory, and one that has given me considerable satisfaction. Nora Jones’s Come Away With Me also haunted me and captured my imagination and has become a fi rm favourite from the collections.

I had never imagined though that I would be working on songs by Amy Winehouse – or Dolly Parton for that matter! But again I had a pleasant surprise and grew very much to appreciate the unusual approach – if not unique style and structure of both Valerieand Love is a Losing Game.

The most diffi cult to tackle? Probably Eva Cassidy’s Somewhere. I knew of her songs and tragic early death and that the song had

been published posthumously, but I was not familiar with this song and found its harmonies and syncopations diffi cult to adapt.

Although some pieces I found more workable than others, and thoughperhaps the lyrics don’t quite compare to those I was more accustomed to from that earlier great period of song writing, I found the challenge a most satisfactory and worthwhile one and my respect for

both the writers and singers has risen dramatically. The use of chords in these

songs was quite different, refreshingly so, and the syncopations demanding to say

the least, especially in James Blunt’s You’re Beautiful and George Michael’s Jesus to a Child.

I can’t promise that these arrangements will be easy to play (it took me two days to record them, whereas the 32 pieces in the two jazz books were completed in a single

day), but I can promise that efforts made with them will be fully rewarded and that

the enjoyment and satisfaction gained will be worth every moment spent

– just as writing and recording

them was for me.And the good news? Another Pop Piano Player book is in preparation (as is another Jazz Piano Player). As the new list is coming through I am really delighted that we will have such outstanding titles as NobodyDoes It Better (Marvin Hamlisch), Hello(Lionel Richie), and You’ve Got a Friend(Carole King), and most recently You Are the Sunshine of My Life. No doubt there will be a few surprising discoveries for me as well!

How it works...Designed for pianists wanting to make the transition into playing pop piano, as well as for those keen to develop their own style, each song is presented in two different formats:
