Tom Trenney shares his passion as pastoral musician, composer, and teacher in

worship with his home congregation, in the college classroom, and in performances,

hymn festivals, choral and organ workshops and master classes all around the

country. Since 2009, he has been blessed to serve as Minister of Music to First-

Plymouth Church (United Church of Christ) in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he

shepherds three adult choirs, accompanies the congregation on the Schoenstein organ,

preaches sermons, and guides the Abendmusik at First-Plymouth Concert Series.

In 2015-16, three of First-Plymouth’s choirs were honored to perform at conventions

of the Nebraska Choral Directors Association, the Nebraska Music Educators

Association, and the North Central American Choral Directors Association

(ACDA). In March 2017, First-Plymouth’s chamber choir, Cantorei, sang two

worship services at the national ACDA convention in Minneapolis.

In Fall 2018, Tom served as visiting conductor of the Wartburg Choir and Ritterchor

Men’s Chorus at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. His semester in residence

included leadership of the annual Christmas With Wartburg festival. In Spring 2019,

Tom will serve as visiting conductor of the Doane Choir at Doane University in

Crete, Nebraska, preparing the choir to sing in a performance of Brahms’ A German

Requiem which he will conduct with the Abendmusik Chorus and Nebraska Wesleyan

University Choir in April 2019.

In addition to his ministry at First-Plymouth, Tom is Music Director of sounding light

— a chamber choir which he founded in southeastern Michigan in 2003. sounding

light was honored with the invitation to perform at the national convention of the

ACDA in March 2017. In spring 2019, sounding light will offer the Michigan and

Ohio premieres of John Muehleisen’s

moving and meaningful Pietà.

Tom’s choral compositions have been published by Augsburg Fortress, Beckenhorst

Press, E.C. Schirmer/Galaxy, Morningstar, MusicSpoke, Pavane, and G.

Schirmer. His music has been sung in churches and colleges around the

country. Tom’s CD recordings with First-Plymouth and sounding light have been

featured on national public radio’s Pipedreams, With Heart and Voice, and Sing for

Joy.

Most notably, Tom has been blessed to perform and teach at regional and national

gatherings of the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the ACDA, the Organ

Historical Society, the Presbyterian Association of Musicians (PAM), the National

Association of Pastoral Musicians, the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians,

Choristers Guild, Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts, the

Sewanee Church Music Conference, and the Calvin Institute of Worship. In 2019-20,

he will be clinician for sacred music conferences for PAM at Mo Ranch, Texas, for

AGO national convention in Atlanta, for Association of Disciples Musicians, for

Virginia Wesleyan University in Virginia Beach, and for the national Conference on

Sacred Music in Charleston, SC. In summer 2020, he will lead his first international

choral and spiritual retreat with Perform International on the Isle of Iona, Scotland.

A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Eastman School of Music,

Tom is grateful for the inspiration of his teachers and mentors – especially Anton

Armstrong, David Davidson, Craig Hella Johnson, (Mister) Fred Rogers, William

Weinert, Anne Wilson and Todd Wilson.

Sarasota-Manatee Chapter History

The Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of the American Guild of Organists had an interesting

beginning. The Manatee chapter was first to be chartered in 1952 with the Sarasota

chapter receiving a charter from National AGO Headquarters in 1957. Both chapters

were then active for the next ten years until Manatee was merged into the Sarasota

one in 1967. Finally, in 1971, we became who we are now, the Sarasota-Manatee

chapter, a membership of 90+ members who identify as organists, music directors,

and vocalists who are affiliated with 52 different churches in a geographic area from

Fort Myers and Engelwood to Venice, Sarasota, Bradenton, and north to Parrish,

Palmetto and St. Petersburg. Please check out our website at www.agosm.org

Since 1967 we have co-sponsored or sponsored an array of organ and choral concerts,

participated in various organ, choral and handbell events, and in January of 2010, we

hosted the AGO Region IV Midwinter Conference which brought recitalists Balint

Karosi, Laura Ellis, Felix Hell, Janet Fishell and Ahreum Han to play concerts and

featured Daniel Moe and organist John Fenstermaker in the Opening Convocation.

The Richard Zielinski Singers presented a concert, and the Sarasota Camerata

performed the Memorial Requiem composed by our own Cynthia Roberts-Greene.

Organist Tom Trenney, who is leading this Festival, closed the conference by

accompanying two silent films.

In just the past three years we have co-sponsored the following internationally known

organists: Craig Cramer, Katelyn Emerson, Stephen Hamilton, Gail Archer, Nathan

Laube, Andrew Kotylo, Marilyn Keiser, Bradley Welch, David Cherwien, Tom

Murray, Jeremy Filsell, Ken Cowan and Vincent DuBois.

Our members strive to be the very foundation of our national organization, The

American Guild of Organists. We are the bedrock on which the whole is built, and

our chapter is at the heart of our musical life through which we endeavor to foster a

thriving community of musicians who share their knowledge and passion for the

organ, and engage, support and uplift musicians while enriching our community life

together. We are looking forward to an exciting year in 2020-21 as we join together

for fellowship, inspiration, education and world-class musical presentations. Check

on our website for individual events at agosm.org/events.

Organ improvisation by Tom Trenney

We hope that you have been lifted up by this experience of choral and organ music

and by participating in the singing this afternoon. While this program is a gift to the

community by the Sarasota-Manatee Chapter, it has been an expensive endeavor. We

invite you join with us to help defray the costs of today’s program by placing a

contribution in the collection plate as you leave.
