A few notes on your WordPress

Theme The theme used on the website is called DIVI. It is a multi­purpose theme and allows for a lot of flexibility on the layout, with many inbuilt components (called modules).   The documentation for Divi is on the link below. The documentation will help if you ever want to adjust or extend the layout or contents of your site. The main aspect that any new administrator may want to seek familiarity with is the DIVI builder (read more under ‘how to update pages’ below).  Divi documentation: http://www.elegantthemes.com/gallery/divi/documentation/ 

 

   

How to update pages You can edit almost every aspect of the layout and content of a page by choosing to edit a page under the pages menu in WordPress…  

  The page is constructed within the DIVI theme using the DIVI page builder. There is some useful information here including an overview video. http://www.elegantthemes.com/gallery/divi/documentation/builder­overview­new/  

  

Sections The top level building block of a page is a section. You can add rows with a specific column layout into a section and then add modules into these rows ­ read on for more info.   You can add a standard, full width or speciality section which will give you different options for components to include in that section.   Add from library gives the option to add from your own library of components and there are some that have been specifically created to achieve the desired layout for the AT­3 site.   There are third party library components for DIVI also which can be added if required.   Each section has the option to customise the background image and colour and other options.    

Rows Most sections of the site are standard sections. If you create a standard section, yYou can add a row, where you can choose either a single column, or a more specific column layout ­ see screenshot below...  

     

Modules You can add different preset kinds of content into each column. See the screen below ­ modules are types of content which are pretty intuitive basically.  

 Note: After making any changes to a page, be sure to click the blue Update button on the right hand side of the page. This is easy to forget!  

 

Blog posts You can add blog posts to the blog by going to posts on the wordpress main menu. Under the posts menu you can create categories to categorise posts and which users could then use to navigate these categories.  

 Blog posts essentially consist of the title, main content and featured image (right side of the screen when editing in WordPress).  The blog is initially hidden from the site but can be added into the navigation (see how to update the navigation menu).  

Media Library A standard feature of WordPress. All images added to posts or pages as featured images are added to the media library. You can either add images directly to a page or add them into the media library collectively for later use.   

 

The AT­3 Application Form As previously discussed, this uses gravity forms.   Notes: 

­ The form is customisable and can be found under Forms and the forms sub menu in WordPress 

­ The form is editable in one long screen which consists of all of the form fields (each with their own settings menu) and page breaks which dictate the different stages or screens that the form is broken up into 

­ By hovering over the form entry in the screen below, you can find options to change the notifications which are emails that are automatically sent. There are notification emails to the user if they have saved the form to continue later. Also an admin notification which is sent to you internally when the form is filled out. The recipient email address is obviously editable here. 

­ You can also change confirmations which are on screen messages ­ the main one is when the form has been filled out ­ “Thanks for your application! We will be in touch with next steps.” 

 

 

How to update the main navigation menu Anyone with administrator permissions can go to Appearance and the Menus sub menu in WordPress in order to edit the main navigation.  

  There you can add pages, posts or custom links to the menu as a top level or sub level menu item. It is fairly intuitive. Once you have added or tweaked the menu, don’t forget to click the Save Menu button. The menu structure should then be updated to reflect the changes.    

Footer and Sidebar Widgets Widgets are a standard WordPress feature. In WordPress you can add different kinds of widgets to areas of the site which are set up as widget areas.  Widgets allow you to add custom free text or ready made, for example a list of posts or pages in a category, or a form, or a calendar.   On the AT­3 website, the two areas that contain widgets are the sidebar ­ which applies to the blog page, and the footer (DIVI theme). The footer is set up with different columns where you can add or adjust widgets.   

  On the widget screen, you can find the widget areas to the right, and available widgets on the left. You can simply drag an available widget across to the required widget area and then customise as appropriate in the widget options, once you have added it.   The WordPress plugin library allows you to add different kinds of widgets to the website.  

Managing users You can manage user permissions under the WordPress Users menu. It will be fairly intuitive but you can essentially assign administrator, and editor roles to new users you create. Admin will give you permissions to everything whilst editor is more concerned with managing site content.  

 

   

WordPress Plugins WordPress allows you to install third party plugins to the website in order to extend the standard functionality of the website.   If you look under plugins from the main left hand menu in WordPress, you will see the list of plugins already installed on the site.   Also if you were ever seeking new behaviour or abilities, you could optionally install new plugins.  Notes: 

­ Be careful to read the installation instructions, and check how popular and well used, and the compatibility with your version of WordPress before installing a new plugin 

­ Plugins need to be updated periodically at least every few months if there are new updates available (there is a note against each plugin when this is the case) 

­ Updating plugins, ensures that any improvements, mainly in terms of security fixes are applied 

­ Before updating anything make sure that the site is backed up (see WordPress updates) 

 

  

 

   

WordPress Core updates In addition to keeping plugins up to date periodically, please also be on the lookout for WordPress updates every now and then. It will tell you within the WordPress interface and you can run the automatic update.   

● Make sure the site is backed up before making any updates to plugins or WordPress (known as WordPress core) 

● Update WordPress core first, and then plugins in that order ● There are a many available backup plugins. You could maintain a backup to your 

dropbox or google docs account for example. You can search for plugins in WordPress but here is a good solution: Updraft plus backup… https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/
