BEING THOUGHTFUL NEIGHBORS… Please remember that sound travels throughout the condo complex, please be considerate of your neighbors when using appliances or engaging in activities that create louder than normal noises. Also, we do not have grocery carts for every suite, so, please return the carts to their respective floors as soon as you have unloaded them. Your neighbors will thank you.

FYI………… Any resident who wishes to donate a bicycle may do so by contacting the House of Hope at the First Baptist Church on Merritt Island. Their phone number is 321-454-3174.

A WORD OF CAUTION…….. We are now entering our hurricane and rainy season and as well as periods of high humidity. During these times our garage floors may become very slippery due to dampness or water on them. Please be extra careful when traversing the garages and walkways. It’s also a good time to ensure your shutters are in good working order and your battery packs are functioning.

HAPPENINGS AROUND WHITLEY BAY… We held our annual Super Bowl XLVI Party on February 5th! Many thanks to the 53+ attendees who shared their talents making chili, sliders, wings of all varieties and so many other tasty delights by the great cooks at Whitley Bay and friends! The game environment demonstrated an enthusiastic rivalry surrounded by balloons, banners, and WB Spirit! Final Score: Giants 21 Patriots 17. Many Thanks to all those who helped make this a Super Bowl to remember. What a game!

The Whitley Bay Annual Board meeting was held on February 22nd. We would like to thank and extend our appreciation to all the volunteers who helped with the delicious cookout held prior to the meeting. Three of our incumbent Board Members, Stan Bowers, Larry Ramsay, and Bob Shrader volunteered to serve on the Board for 2012. Also, please welcome the newly appointed Members at Large, Terry Yates (#1105) and Richard Isom (#502).

Terry came to Whitley Bay from Cape Cod, but is originally a Jersey Girl. She has been a participant in Whitley Bay activities since she moved here in 2010. Before she retired, Terry worked as an International Development and Government Relations Specialist for AT&T. Terry now spends time as a glass fusion artist and jewelry designer. Richard and his lovely wife Cametta moved from Merritt Island into Whitley Bay in July 2010. Richard is a retired Bell South employee and enjoys playing poker and doing “anything he wants”. The Isoms are avid supporters of Whitley Bay activities and Richard just completed the Condo Board of Directors Certification Course, Congratulations Richard! On March 17th, the Whitley Bay St Patrick’s Day Party was attended by 55+ residents and friends who enjoyed a variety of delicious and different Irish dishes consisting of appetizers, corned beef and cabbage, veggies, green desserts, and beverages. Hold on to your Horses and Hats! The First Whitley Bay Kentucky Derby Party was held on May 5th and will go into the archives as one of the best Social Committee events! From the picture below, the fashionable Derby chapeaus were created at a Hat Class 10 days prior to the Derby Event. Thanks to Pat and Marney Bowlds, members of the Social Committee, for suggesting this theme! No doubt, the food, beverages, and Derby were a unique experience for all 55 attendees, as was the guest appearance of a Derby hopeful from Cocoa that was a long shot to win and didn’t make the cut. Judging from the lines of this horse, she would have given “I’ll Have Another” a real “Run for the Roses”! !

TERMINOLOGY BY

Ted Clark (#903)

The English language is tough enough, but with the many dialects (ie; New England nasal, Southern drawl, Western twang, Mid-west clarity) comes the special meanings (terminology) associated with special occupations. For instance, in my Navy, (years ago) in port ships in the tropics would rig awnings to keep the sun from heating up the extensive deck space most ships have. We had air conditioning in only a few selected spaces and the rest of the ship was "cooled" by ventilation fans. The awnings actually were life-savers. (And a pain in the ….) Whenever the Duty Officer saw a rainstorm coming, he would require the Duty Boatswain Mate to pass the word "House all awnings!" over the ship's public address system. This is NOT a request for the deck crews, who owned the awnings, to report the physical condition of the awnings, but a command to create valleys in each awning, like the inverted roof of a "house." This would allow the awning to shed the forthcoming rain water, avoiding the puddling, sagging, and stretching of the canvas by the accumulating gallons of water which occurred when the canvas got wet and began collecting the rain. After the shower, the taught canvas dried rapidly, and, as a result, the Duty Office had the word passed, "Un-house your awnings", which meant undoing all the work done just before! Whitely Bay also uses terminology that some people do not apparently understand. They both apply to our discards: Recyclables and Cardboard. Recycles have now been put in the "Non-segregated" category. Waste Management in its creative management policy has given Whitley Bay four Recyclable collection tubs for our sixty-four homes. Apparently enough, however, these tubs do have a limited capacity or volume. I call this limit "Cube" for simplification. Four tubs with limited cube will not hold everyone’s recyclables unless we take steps to reduce "Cube." Plastic containers appear to be the only thing we as individuals can control. Point…STEP or CRUSH any plastic containers before you put them in your waste packs to carry to these tubs. Five gallon plastic water containers can be reduced to one gallon cube. Milk containers become cube quarts. Soda bottles slim down accordingly. And, finally, I can fit my recyclables into the tubs when I get my weekly load down to the First Floor Garage! Cardboard is another sore point. The term "Breakdown" seems beyond some people. Breakdown simply means FLATTEN each carton or cardboard box before putting it in the Cardboard Dumpster. If you can, just step on the small ones and use a large knife or a screwdriver to defeat the glue holding the big boxes together so as to flatten them. I do the big box work when I get down to the dumpster, and save trips from the ninth floor down by packing a little box inside a bigger, then that box inside a bigger until I have just one package to put in or on my grocery cart. Either residents or delivery crews have gotten to where they dump their boxes whole. Big, big "Cube!" No way can I tell if my package can fit in that one dumpster until I get down there. My usual recourse, after using the appropriate words to describe the unthinking person making my trip

down futile, is to dump my precious cardboard into the nearest trash dumpster, usually in the Trash Room just behind me. OK, so I complain too much. However, I have found that our Whitley Bay neighborhood is extremely considerate, always concerned about maintaining our wonderful life, and willing to cooperate in so many ways to retain our great reputation, that all it takes is a simple notice like this to get that consideration, concern and cooperation. So, reduce Cube!

STEP ON IT, CRUSH IT, FLATTEN IT

THEN,

DUMP IT!
