President Ed Johnson has some family in town, and, as a result, I am writing this arti-cle for him. Our Christmas Party on Sunday December 16th was held at Tom and Susan Harris’ lovely home on President’s Point. Tom and Susan’s hospitality was strictly first class with offerings of Bloody Marys, wine and soft drinks with munchies.

We all had a chance to visit and catch up with one another. Christine Perry was able to attend, which provided us an opportunity to ex-press our condolences on the loss of husband Mike.

We had a wonderful brunch, dessert and cof-fee, after which we drew numbers and selected a gift. We were allowed two steals. This is always an interesting exchange, as there is always some-thing that everyone wants. One of those items

was a bucket of Oysters from Christine Per-ry — to find out what happened, well, ‘it’s all about the oysters’, so read on!

Der gave the treasurer’s report and let everyone know that we still have money in the bank and are solvent.

Next month is our planning meeting, so please put on your thinking caps for event ideas.

If you would like to be on the officer slate for 2013, please let me know as soon as possible as voting will occur at the Planning Meeting. Right now the slate is: Duane Niemi, President, Jim Stott, Vice President, Darleen Rohwein, Secre-tary and Der Roupe, Treasurer.

greenery trimmed in red ribbons and berries fit-ting the season. The living room, with a Santa theme, had garlands, wrapped boxes, and a won-

derful Christmas tree.

The Niemi’s, who arrived early to assist in the set up, were helping all the PSEB’ers to ‘toddies’, which consisted of Bloody Marys, champagne, Mimosas, and Cape Codders (cranberry juice). The ‘toddy’ was most wel-come, fending off the cold and rain as it warmed our insides. The company and setting were warm and seasonal when, from the loft, we heard Christmas tunes, compliments of Dave Demory

and his harmonica.

The buffet brunch was served on the lower level overlooking the Puget Sound. On this very gray and rainy day, there was only one very ‘salty’ group out in their pleasure boat; the more ‘sane’

ones stayed home. The weather did not deter

the cargo ships navigating the channel.

Brunch, more like a full meal with artichoke quiche (many club members asked for the recipe, included in this issue), broccoli salad, ham, rolls,

fruit medley, cinnamon rolls and, and, and... what wasn’t to love? Each beautifully set table

for four invited tablemates to enjoy each other in smaller groups, the delicious meal, and the view out over the Sound.

Once brunch was finished, Tom urged us

back upstairs for the gift exchange. In the ab-sence of Ed Johnson, Duane Niemi called the business meeting to order (see Darleen’s notes), explaining that Ed and Tanya had family com-mitments that day. Once the business was con-

cluded, Duane passed out numbers for the gift exchange. One by one gifts were chosen. When Judy Thorne’s number came up, grinning widely, she chose a three gallon bucket full of freshly harvested oysters, courtesy of Christine Perry,

right off the beach in front of her home in Ta-huya on the Hood Canal.

Overall, the exchange went smoothly with some very interesting items, that is until Pat Cooper’s number came up. He strolled stealthi-ly across the room and snatched the oyster bucket from Judy. Pat had smiles, but Judy was

not pleased, because we think she already had dinner plans for that evening, and the plan in-cluded fresh oysters. As the exchange contin-

ued there were more ‘steals’, but the oysters re-mained with Pat. Until, that is, Beverly’s num-

ber came up, and she stole the oysters from Pat, ensuring the oysters would indeed stay with the Coopers. She had ‘sealed the deal’ since her ‘steal’ was the second and last for that outstand-ing gift.

Tools, garage stuff, scented soap, home dec-orations and various specialty foods, including a variety of hot sauces from hot to ‘hotter than hell’ to ‘you really have to be a fool to use this’, a

Thunderbird drink holder and a wine barrel stave candle holder were just a few of the gifts, some of which were gleefully ‘stolen’ with the hope of retaining that particular gift through the

rest of the exchange.

Judy Roupe collected the checks for the club’s donation to Toys for Tots and dues. All in all, the day was greatly enjoyed and fun time was had by all.

The Harris’ were gracious hosts. Their home could not have been more festive, and Su-san’s brunch was delicious and beautifully served. We thank them for an very special gath-ering and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Joyous and Healthy New Year.

P.S. This just in. Even though Coopers stole the bucket of oysters for themselves, but in the Christmas Spirit, they shared them with the Thornes. But alas, as Pat and Beverly got into their car, the Harris' went back into their home and lo and behold! There was the bucket of oys-ters that had been left behind! The Coopers were flagged down successfully and returned to

the house to collect that prized gift!

What a good time we had at the Christmas party at the home of Tom & Susan Harris! Attend-ing were: Duane & Nancy Niemi, Bob & Martha Callard, Gordon & Judy Thorne, Der & Judy Roupe, Christine Perry, Ray & Margaret Vingo, Pat & Beverly Cooper, Forest & Sharon Stoner, Jerry & Carol Weiler, Phil & Cheryl McCurdy, Dave Demory & Kay Scott, and the Rohweins.

Duane Niemi stood in for Ed Johnson, who had a family emergency. Der Roupe gave the treasurer’s report: we have $1351.00 on hand with no bills. Only 7 members have paid their 2013 dues. We are donating $20.00 per couple for Toys for Tots. Then we had a moment of si-lence in memory for Michael Perry and the families of Newtown, CT.

Our annual planning meeting will be January 13, 2013, 1:00pm at the Niemi’s home.

Carol Weiler discussed the Feb 9, 2013 Wine and Chocolate Tour. She needed to know how many would be interested in coming, with a raise of hands, we had approximately 7 couples. So, Carol will go ahead and make arrangements for the tour.

Then it became time for the gift exchange, with a number of the gifts changing hands before it was all over and done. A good time was had by all, and everyone went away with a gift.

Merry Christmas to all. See you next year.

Remember all the ‘buzz-mumble’ around the brunch about the egg and artichoke casserole? Well, consensus was: “It was great, how can we get the reci-pe?” Well, Susan Harris passed it along just in time for New Years.

• 1 bunch green onions

• 2-61/2 ounce jars marinated artichoke hearts

• 1 clove garlic

• 4 eggs beaten

• 8 ounces medium Cheddar cheese, grated

• 6 crackers, rolled

Finely mince onions using half of the tops also. Cut artichokes in thirds and reserve oil. Sauté onions and garlic in the artichoke oil. Combine all ingredients.

Bake in a greased 9x9 inch Pyrex dish at 350 for 40 minutes.

Serves 4 as a main dish. This recipe tripled serves 30 for brunch cut in 2 inch squares. It does not have to be kept hot while serving. May be prepared a day ahead and refrigerate or freeze. Thaw and rewarm

about 15 to 20 minutes in a 350 degree oven.

Technical Stuff Technical Stuff —— EthanolEthanol The Historic Vehicle Association recently published a lengthy article concern-

ing the effects of ethanol on your classic or antique car. The following are some of the frequently discussed items and questions. This was updated due to the gov-ernment’s authorization of a 50% increase in the ethanol content in 2010 (from 10% to 15%).

Studies show, at higher blend levels, ethanol’s chemical properties cause corro-sion, reduce fuel economy, burn hotter, and can wreak havoc with fuel mixtures and injectors.

For more information on ethanol go to http://www.historicvehicle.org/Resources/Resources/Ethanol. In addition to a flyer of frequently asked questions, they have posted a slide show, video and a map of where to purchase ethanol-free gasoline. There is a station in Poulsbo that sells 87 Octane ethanol-free gasoline. It is the CENEX at 20370 Viking Way NW.

At the Christmas Brunch, Carol Weiler outlined the proposed February Event that they would host. Six couples responded positive-ly and the event is on. Although the specifics have not been put to pa-per, the Red Wine & Chocolate Tour Red Wine & Chocolate Tour Red Wine & Chocolate Tour Red Wine & Chocolate Tour will be on the weekend of Feb 11-12, the exact date has not been determined — more in next month’s Motor Mouth. The event would be similar to an event last year (tour of three wineries), except it would include Chocolate and only red wine. There is a tasting fee of $5.00 at each winery. If wish you to tour all six, you may purchase a ticket for $30.00 for a sampling each winery. The price also includes a commemorative wine glass.

In Memoriam In Memoriam —— Michael PerryMichael Perry

M ike Perry passed away on December 4th after a

long year and a half strug-gle. Mike will be remembered as the host on the Hood Canal with an abundance of oysters right on the beach of their wa-terfront home. Mike and Christine went out of their way to provide a variety of raw and barbequed oysters. There were

barbequed on the shell, there were baked in the oven and of course “bowls” full of shucked ones. If you loved oysters, this was one event you didn’t want to miss. You were also welcome to bring your buckets and take whatever you wanted back home. It was a special outing that Mike so loved to do. He always had a ditty or a tongue twister of a song to sing to keep the group laughing. His sto-ries were so wonderful.

Of course, Mike insisted that the top be down on “Beulah” his beloved Black 57 Bird, I don’t think I can remember a time when it was up. I must not forget to mention that Mike was also a ‘Bridge’ fanat-ic; he loved his cards. We will all miss Mike with his witty comments and rosy outlook on life, He was a friend to all he met.
