As an Old Salopian rather than an Old Savilian, I feel slightly fraudulent having my mug shot in amongst all of these happy smiley faces (including that of the new Headmistress who is an Old Girl of the Foundation!) Anyway, it would be remiss of me not to add my welcome to this excellent publication, whether you are reading it as a pupil (current or former), a parent (current or prospective) or anyone else interested in our two schools.

We have picked out around 30 Old Savilians, and a similar number of Old Girls, hoping to show the rich and varied careers they have gone into. From doctors, lawyers and teachers to entrepreneurs, musicians and philanthropists, they are playing leading roles in their communities at home in Yorkshire and in far-flung places across the world. Wherever you go, you are likely to bump into an Old Sav and, whether or not they are wearing their distinctive striped tie, you can often tell they have attended the Grammar School! When you talk to Old Boys and Old Girls from the Foundation, what invariably hits you is their love of the old place, their recognition that it gave them a great start in life and their endless collection of (colourful) anecdotes! They represent a rich resource of contacts for the current generation coming through the schools and we love it when they return to give a careers talk, to offer advice, or even to deliver the address at Speech Day.

I suspect we could have filled this book a hundred times over - I hope you enjoy reading about their stories so far.

David Craig Headmaster Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield

WELCOMEAs an Old Girl of Wakefield Girls’ High School myself, I can reflect on my own personal experiences when I read these pen portraits of some of our more recent alumni. It is often in retrospect that we have the greatest capacity to fully appreciate the impact something or someone has had on our lives and that is certainly the case for me when I consider the qualities and values, which are now firmly embedded within my character, which I can credit to the inspirational education received at our school.

The individuals featured in this publication have achieved great successes within their own fields of expertise and, whilst there are worlds of differences between the paths they have chosen, there are similarities amongst them as people; similarities that set them apart as alumni of the Wakefield Grammar School Foundation. Each of them undoubtedly benefitted from the academic excellence that our schools provide, but it is everything else that goes with the academic rigour, creating the whole Wakefield Grammar School Foundation experience, which really makes our alumni stand out; that gives them gumption, confidence and spirit!

Calling on her manufacturing family heritage Charlotte set about designing her first collection and so ‘Lamb 1887’ was born. Charlotte’s bags are made from the softest leathers sourced from the highest quality tanneries around the world. Her designs are inspired by the glamour icons of the past including Sophia Loren, and Jackie O. Charlotte brings a wealth of knowledge to the brand from her family’s footwear and accessories business established by her grandfather in 1887.

‘Lamb 1887’ was launched in 2011 and already has a myriad of celebrity fans including Pippa Middleton, Fearne Cotton and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini. Charlotte continues to direct her own brand and has also taken over as Accessories and Brands Director of her family’s firm, William Lamb Group.

Having completed his A Levels at QEGS, Ed went on to study Human Genetics at Newcastle University graduating in 2004.

Post university, Ed cut his TV and film industry teeth working freelance as a TV and film crew member which took him to various locations around the country. His love of the industry led him to Ipso Facto Films, a company developing, producing and co-producing feature films and documentaries. His first post was as Assistant Producer followed two years later with a promotion to Head of Development.

In 2011 Ed left Ipso Facto Films in order to found his own production company - Hook Pictures. Under the Hook Pictures banner Ed has enjoyed commercial success with his debut feature film as a Producer - ‘The Rise’.

‘The Rise’ starred Luke Treadaway, Iwan Rheon, Matthew Lewis, Vanessa Kirby and Timothy Spall . The Film enjoyed its world premiere at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. It attracted numerous award nominations along the way including BAFTA recognition as Ed was named one of the UK’s Breakthrough Brits 2013.

Hook Pictures has a strong slate of projects in development and relationships with some of the UK’s most exciting new writing and directing talent. Two feature films are due to enter production in 2015/16 and the company is venturing into new and original IP by launching a new comic book publisher this year.

HELEN MASSEYCLASS OF 1998Owner - Romantic Cottage HolidaysA Levels: English Language, German, Art & Design, General Studies

After completing her A Levels in 1998, Helen went to Northumbria University where she obtained her degree in Urban Property Surveying. She has since completed part of an MBA with The Open University and qualified as a Chartered Surveyor (MRICS) - the youngest person in the country to do so at the time.

After undertaking two weeks work experience at the age of 16 with local estate agents & surveyors - Holroyd Miller, Helen was inspired to follow a career in property. She found the right degree which allowed her to spend part of her university studies working as a Trainee with Sanderson Weatherall in Leeds. Once she graduated from Northumbria University, she joined The Miller Group as a Graduate Trainee, quickly working her way to become Senior Land Manager for The Miller Homes division, a position she held for 7 years.

In 2008, and when the property recession hit, Helen set up her own luxury self-catering property company - Romantic Cottage Holidays after having invested in a number of holiday rentals herself. Focussing on high quality properties on the North Yorkshire Coast, Helen handpicks the homes for the portfolio and personally manages all parts of the holiday letting process.

Helen still remains close to her school roots. Her daughter Annabel attends Mulberry House Pre-Prep and son Alex is at Centenary House. She also formed and runs the Old Girls’ Facebook group. She is a member of Walton Parish Council and Chair of the Walton Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group - (Wakefield’s first and only Neighbourhood Plan) and it is also one of the first neighbourhood planning documents to be processed across the whole of Yorkshire.

Daniel left QEGS to embark on his degree in Fashion/Apparel Design at Nottingham Trent University, which he will complete in 2016.

Keen to get as much experience in the fashion industry as possible, Daniel recently undertook an internship at Serge DeNimes, a design led brand based in London, providing exclusive seasonal collections of urban apparel and accessories of premium quality. Daniel worked closely with the brand owner Oliver Proudlock and designed products that will be sold in stores across the country, such as Topman and ASOS.

Whilst at University, Daniel founded his own urban street wear clothing label ‘Unconnected’ with a view to offering the consumer an alternative option to mainstream High Street Fashion. Daniel prides himself on his eye-catching designs, made in the UK and using only the highest quality materials. He began initially by selling his t-shirts on ASOS market place, but as they were selling out fast, he set up his own website to sell his designs and since then, his business has gone from strength to strength. Daniel has also taken Unconnected to trade shows in London and opened several pop-up stores in the UK.

Daniel intends to build his brand and take it worldwide in the future, and has ambitions to have stores in London, Paris and New York.

After completing her A Levels in 2006, Holly decided to take a year out and spent some time travelling in America. It was whilst travelling that she fell in love with the vast continent and hoped that one day she would return in a work setting.

This happened in 2015 when her current employer Deluxe Entertainment Services Group, for whom she was working in London, advertised a post in their New York Office. Holly applied, was successful and moved over to New York full-time in February 2015. Deluxe is a global entertainment company involved in everything from production to distribution.

Holly works in physical and digital distribution as an Account Manager producing DVDs & BlueRays for HBO and BBC America. Rebecca attended Wakefield Girls’ High School from 1999 to 2006. She completed A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and French, as well as an AS Level in Physics, obtaining A grades in her chosen subjects. Although difficult to choose just one highlight of her time at WGHS, Rebecca looks back fondly on her final year, when she was elected Head Girl by both fellow peers and teaching staff.

Rebecca went on to study medicine at the Hull York Medical School and during this time spent 8 weeks working in the (very hot) anaesthetics department of Victoria Hospital, St Lucia. After graduating in 2011, she has worked locally in the Wakefield and Leeds area as a doctor in both medicine and surgery. Along the way Rebecca stumbled upon her passion for psychiatry and has now achieved her membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, with a view to a career in old age psychiatry in the future.

When away from work Rebecca’s main focus has been the renovation of her home, which (after four long years and a lot of elbow grease) is due to be finished in December 2015. She also enjoys training her Labrador puppy, and to her fiancé’s dismay, collecting vintage china tea sets - because you never know when you may need to serve afternoon tea to 50+ guests!

Victoria left Wakefield Girls’ High School having achieved AAB in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Alongside her A Level studies, extra-curricular activities assisted her preparation for a career in engineering. As head of the school sound and light team Victoria developed skills including problem solving and leadership. She was also part of the Wakefield Grammar School Foundation expedition to Borneo, Malaysia in July 2009. Additionally, participation in several music groups, the debating club, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme demonstrated an ability to work well in a team, listen to others and communicate ideas.

During her undergraduate Master’s degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Loughbrough University, Victoria completed an industrial placement working as an Applications Engineer for National Instruments in Berkshire. This role involved supporting and teaching customers across a broad range of sectors from automotive to communications, renewables, aerospace and defence; and allowed her to gain accreditation as a Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer. Her placement highlight was achieved when writing an article on PXI Timing and Synchronisation which was published in the Electronics Weekly magazine.

Victoria’s final two years at university continued to be busy, balancing participation in societies and roles on committees with her undergraduate studies. Her studies culminated in an individual project developing a system to track the movement of bottlenosed dolphins, based upon a technique called Passive Acoustic Monitoring. In July 2014, she was pleased to discover that all of her hard work had paid off, graduating with a First Class Master’s degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

Victoria is now 12 months into her Engineering Graduate Development Programme with Rolls-Royce, working as a Controls Engineer in the nuclear sector. This scheme is broken down into several rotations which provide exposure to several parts of the project lifecycle from design, to manufacture and product verification. This scheme has so far enabled her to perform testing on a new sensor design for a future nuclear propulsion plant and to participate in leadership strategy and safety meetings. Her current role involves leading an update to the control system of a testing rig for a type of specialised valve.

Upon completion of the Engineering Graduate Development Programme, Victoria should begin her first substantive role with Rolls-Royce in March 2016.

After her A Levels at WGHS, Katie gained a BA (Hons) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) from Oriel College, Oxford, and a MSc in International Political Economy (Research) at LSE.

While at university, Katie spent her summers interning in London. After helping to run a national volunteer campaign and deciding the charity sector was not for her, she spent time at Reform, a Westminster-based think-tank. This experience led Katie to recognise her interest in public policy – but full-time jobs for graduates at think-tanks are incredibly rare. Knowing this, Katie set out to build experience elsewhere which could provide a stepping stone up to her dream job.

In 2013, shortly after graduating from LSE, Katie became Economist at the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr). In this role, Katie designed, managed and delivered research projects for a wide range of public and private sector clients on subjects as diverse as business confidence, the value of art to the economy and the cost of ill-health at work. She commented on the outlook for the UK economy on national television and radio and was frequently quoted in national and international press. She led Cebr’s global economics team for a year, establishing a new strategy for the forecasting process and was co-author of Cebr’s World Economic League Table 2013 (a 20-year global economic outlook which attracted 26,000 press mentions worldwide.)

With 18 months of consulting experience under her belt, Katie made the move back to public policy. She is currently an Economist for the Social Market Foundation, an independent think-tank. Here she focuses on financial services, the UK’s long-term growth prospects and the impact of technology and network capability on the economy. Her publications for the SMF include Good Culture: Does the model matter in financial services?, Savings in the Balance: Managing risk in a post-crisis economy, and Playing the Field: Consumers and competition in banking.

Katie lives in London. In her spare time she runs a Brownie unit and is learning Mandarin.

Twelve months later, Stephen had played in over fifteen countries, had released his first album ‘Butterfly in a Hurricane’ on iTunes, and had started playing at the world’s most exclusive parties. With words, photographs (and soon video) users can ‘jam’ with their friends or strangers anywhere in the world. The app was featured on the front page of the Apple App Store in 16 countries. HaikuJAM has been profiled in Forbes, The New York Times, The Guardian, BBC, TechCrunch, CNET, The Week and was named amongst the “50 BEST CREATIVE APPS” globally by The Observer. At 20, he founded “The Bill Geeks”, an online automated utility-bill management system, which would auto-switch homeowners onto the cheapest available electricity/gas tariffs, after their existing deals expired - Dhrupad led the team as CEO. The Bill Geeks won a “Startup Weekend” hackathon competition (sponsored by Google), raised angel funding and received written acknowledgement for the venture from PM David Cameron.

Dhrupad secured 10 A*s at GCSE and 2 A* grades in A Level. He was the national runner-up in “ifs Young Business Writer of the Year” both in 2009 and 2010, and he was awarded the BWD Rensburg Scholarship in 2008/2009 for entrepreneurial excellence.

Dhrupad went on to read Economics at University College London (UCL) and graduated in 2013. Just two months after starting his degree, he was offered a role at the European Parliament through Nirj Deva, Vice-President of the European Parliament’s Development Committee and Conservative MEP for the South East of England. They met at the “International Leadership Symposium on Ethics in Business” in Brussels, where Dhrupad impressed Mr. Deva with a speech on the importance of fusing corporate profitability with sustainability. Dhrupad was immediately introduced to high level politics. After spending five weeks in Brussels he was offered a part-time traineeship, through which he contributed to preparing Mr. Deva’s European Parliament Presidential campaign strategy and also worked to strengthen relations between India and the European Union.

Having started to pen his first novel at UCL in 2011, Dhrupad was awarded the annual UCL “DSC Literature Scholarship”, which fully funds a student to attend the Jaipur Literature Festival for the purposes of research into any aspect of South Asian Literature. His work-in-progress novel, “The Tibetan Waiter”, is written entirely in verse and inspired by Vikram Seth’s “The Golden Gate”. The story is one of politics, spirituality and love.

Matt Woodhead, despite being only 22, is a theatre director, and one of the brains behind an award-winning and a critically acclaimed play, telling the often unremembered story of the Valley Parade fire, which struck Bradford in 1985.

Started in October 2012 at the University of Sheffield, the theatre group in question, Funny You Should Ask (FYSA) initially consisted of Matt and seven friends, formed to try and move their theatrical ambitions out of the university’s old Drama Studio and into more alternative, exciting pastures.

It worked! Now formed from 18 members, FYSA has gained national recognition, with their play about the Valley Parade, fire in Bradford, ‘The 56’ enjoyed a month-long run at the Edinburgh Fringe, and went on a national tour, encompassing amongst others, theatres in London and The Lowry in Salford. ‘The 56’ went on to win The Director’s Guild Award for Best Newcomer, The Spotlight Award for Best Actress, Judges Award for Best Ensemble (NSDF) and was shortlisted for The Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award. Despite its obvious success, Matt’s attitude towards his company and their production, which he described as a “northern story” hasn’t changed. Matt describes the production as a “raw, verbatim” play, drawn entirely from conversations and testimony of survivors of the terrible day, and the work required to get it on stage. All profits of the project are to be directed to Bradford University Burns Research Unit established in the aftermath of the fire.

FYSA cut their performing teeth in Sheffield’s Library Theatre with a production of ‘Lord of the Flies’. Featuring a cast of 15 and a team of over 25, the performance, staged to raise funds to make possible their 2013 Fringe Debut of Christopher Durang’s ‘Laughing Wild’ and co-directed by Matt, received overwhelming reviews. Whilst at university, Matt also directed Chekov’s ‘The Bear’ for the Platform Performance Festival, the University of Sheffield’s annual performing arts festival. Matt was also involved with Sheffield University Theatre Company (SuTCo), as the external publicist.

FYSA made their third appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year with ‘E15’, their new verbatim production tackling the social housing issue in Britain. This piece of documentary theatre is adapted exclusively from real-life testimonies to provide a truthful re-telling of a national issue and how one group of women refused to be marginalized.

In addition to their theatre productions, FYSA facilitate free theatre workshops for children in the local area, having already provided for over 2,000 students since they began and are working as a residency company with Battersea Arts Centre in January 2016. Matt also participated in the Director’s Course at the National Theatre in September 2015.

Joshua enjoyed his time at QEGS and left with a quite varied choice of A Levels and GCSEs but had yet to decide upon what career path he wished to take and applied for deferred entry at various universities, in different subjects

During his gap-year, he made the decision to embark on the BA (Hons) Journalism course at City University London. It proved to be an invaluable decision, one he doesn’t think he would have been able to get right had he not given himself time to weigh up his options and instead made a snap decision on his future during Sixth Form.

Throughout his degree, Joshua acquired numerous work placements, including work as a Live Commentator for French news agency Agence France Presse during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Sport, particularly football, has always been a passion of Joshua’s and upon his graduation with an upper-tier 2:1, he was lucky enough to acquire an internship with sport start-up company Fanatix – and thus be in the enviable position of getting paid to watch sport.

That position developed into a contracted role and saw Joshua embark on a number of exciting projects such as reporting from football matches live at stadiums around the country to dropping in on press conferences with notable managers and players – not to mention trying not to cheer in the press box when his beloved Arsenal score!

Following his return to the North after four years in London, Joshua has taken up a number of freelance roles including work with the Development Office of Wakefield Grammar School Foundation, where he has helped on a number of different projects including the complete re-design of the QEGS magazine, The Savilian.

JAMES CRAPPER CLASS OF 2013LuthierA Levels: Music, Economics, Politics, General Studies

Throughout his career at QEGS, James’ passion was music. He played in many school bands on both guitar and trumpet. He also sang with the Foundation Choir. In Year 12 he recorded an album with the folk band ‘Ceol’.

Following completion of his A Levels, rather than going to university, he chose the road less travelled, moving to Ireland to study lutherie, the craft of making string instruments.

There he learned traditional methods of guitar building by hand and eye, and was also encouraged to explore new modern concepts. James combines traditional craftsmanship with exotic tonewoods, carbon fibre bracing, offset soundholes, soundports and other such features to create the highest quality instruments, both tonally and aesthetically.

James is now back in Yorkshire building bespoke acoustic guitars and repairing instruments in his workshop. Each guitar is the culmination of approximately 150 hours of work with each piece of timber being hand selected and individually fine-tuned. The end product is a truly unique guitar of the finest quality.

He looked back fondly on his time at QEGS and decided to dive fully into the career, following in the footsteps of some of his own inspirational teachers. After a hard year with the Red Kite Alliance as a Trainee Mathematics Teacher, he qualified with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of York.

He is now working as a Newly Qualified Teacher in his first post at Bourne Grammar School in Lincolnshire. Though he still keeps checking the QEGS website for any vacancies and a chance to come back to his favourite school!

Throughout our work on this book we have seen countless examples of Old Boys and Old Girls pushing themselves and others to go one step further. Our hope in compiling this work is to celebrate the achievements of our former pupils and to share their stories with the next generation. Everyone featured in this book has succeeded because of their talents. Equally all of them have made the most of those talents thanks to the skills they have honed in one of the Foundation’s schools here in Wakefield.

For this book to ever make it to print we had to limit it to those who were under 40 at the start of the 2014/15 academic year. That is not to say there are not as many alumni over that age who have and will continue to make a huge contribution to the world. Many of their stories will be told in future publications.

The profiles we have used are edited excerpts from interviews and correspondence which took place between alumni and the Development Office between October 2014 and October 2015. As careers continue to progress at an impressive pace, undoubtedly the young people featured here will already have more up-to-date successes to celebrate. I am also sure that another volume will be needed to house the many stories that will come from other young alumni, who will quite rightly want to share their achievements having heard of this first edition.

This book has many authors. It has been compiled by the Development Office and every member of that team has contributed to it. In particular this book could not have happened without Development Officer Lizzie Hulme and Development Assistant Joshua Walters.

This book was written to inspire the next generation. If I had one message for any young person leaving QEGS or WGHS it would be that you have the talent and the skills to make an impact in the world. Where and what you do, and when you do it is your choice, but whatever you choose you will have the Foundation behind you.
