A Framework of Trust

By Charles S. Sink

In order for you to persuade people to follow your suggestions or willingly do as you ask, they musttrust you and your motives. If you don’t trust yourself, you’ll never win the enduring trust of others.

Do you trust yourself to change your behavior permanently? Can you trust yourself to be the examplefor others that you wish to be? My trust in myself was shattered after years and years of determinationto change my behavior while failing to acknowledge what my underlying problem was. I couldestablish short bursts of achievement yet I could never quite round third base and experience thevictory of home plate. I was spiritually bankrupt. I practiced a faith void of trust. I relied on myself, giving only lip service to powers greater than me.

I failed to understand that I must trust and rely on the only real power to change: faith. What I could notdo for myself, surely a higher power could. Surely he will if I ask for help with a sincere heart. Iencourage you to cultivate deeper understanding of power far greater than the measure given you.Know this: such power is available and millions use it every day. Discover the faith of your understanding and trust in it.

Love is the Greatest Incentive

Why do you want to be successful? Think about the person you love the most. Think about the legacy

you want to leave. Think about what in the world you treasure the most. Is it acceptable to you to applymediocre effort toward improving your value to that person you adore or that goal that is mosttreasured in your heart?

Money should be viewed as no more than a means to an end. There is nothing wrong with striving toearn as much money as you possibly can because it enables swift delivery of goods and services youmay need to accomplish your highest goals. Money can help secure peace, comfort and materialfoundation for the dignity and betterment of those you love.

To be perfectly frank, you and I should feel shame and remorse when we fail to perform those simpledaily disciplines which we know to be best for our loved ones and our own future. Conversely, think of the joy you’ve experienced when you overcame procrastination or laziness and applied your best efforttoward a challenge, thus emerging successful. That feeling is the elation of winning!

Winning the battle with one’s own demons; one’s defects of character, is the sweetest victory one canhave in life because it instructs us that we are capable of more. In short, it proves we can indeed growand get better.

There is a new and better way to better way to apply “self-help” toward becoming a better executive, leader, manager, teacher, mother, father, professional or volunteer. It works because it is based ondeeply personal, individualized moral imperatives. It activates the conscience. Let me be so bold as toask you, do you have a moral compass? Do you know the general direction of good versus bad? Even if you’re not exactly sure of what is truly good or virtuous, I bet you’re pretty damn sure of what is bad or void of virtue.

Determine the general good direction (inspired by love) in which you want to head and then buildguardrails to keep your daily behavior on the road of success. Don’t veer off into the ditch on one sideor oncoming traffic on the other! Instead focus straight ahead and upward toward enlightened self interest.

Remember, this is a personal, moral undertaking. Your own conscience will be the enforcer of your actions toward victory and success.

Study and work on daily the graduation to fulfillment in this framework and delight in how much better your efforts start paying off. Let each private victory confirm your faith and encourage your nextmeasure of growth.

The Climb of Individual Progress

↑ LOVE – HEAVEN – PARADISE ↑

What I want most – what I love most

The Magnet – powerful reverse gravity (loved ones – legacy – salvation) – Public Victories – theearned respect and trust of others

Private victories – feeling the power of working faith – sincere interest in helping others succeed – experiencing measurable professional growth – trust in yourself

Effort – voluntarily leaving comfort zone – experiencing private victories and growth

Shame, guilt and disgust reverse gravity (validates fear of failure) – Living with oneself without behavioral change is unbearable!

↑ Upward force of personal growth ↑

--------Tipping Point – Self-Honesty – Attitude – Conquering the pull of gravity-------

↓ Downward pull of gravity ↓

Mediocrity – comfort – inertia – fear of change – fear of responsibility (fear of success)

Bad habits – procrastination – negative company – frivolity – rationalization – self- pity – self-deception

Pride – lust – greed – sloth – envy – hate – self loathing – denial – vice – crime – sin

↓ DARKNESS - HELL – DEATH ↓

This model is a hierarchy of the human condition. It shows the continuum of where our individualhumanity may exist in the spiritual, intellectual and physical realms. The framework contains afundamental growth paradigm of which one may avail himself by simply choosing between twoopposite directions: toward paradise or toward death. The moment we become completely honest withourselves is the moment we can begin to apply honest, thereby real solutions to the issues plaguing us.

Now that we can honestly identify what our problems have always been and still are, we can finallyutilize the tools and techniques for personal growth that will propel growth. Failure ceases to be anoption. Success becomes our only destiny!

This personal growth paradigm is modeled from a life of experience and the intensive study of some of the world’s most revered philosophers and business leaders. My personal story and the repeated

patterns of men and women who’ve overcome overwhelming setbacks provide validity for this modelof individualized human progress.
