SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING FUNKY, SOMETHING BLUES

Toronto – Wednesday, April 24, 2013 ~ When the TD Toronto Jazz Festival kicks off this summer it will celebrate artists who have made their mark over the decades along with artists making their mark today. With more than 1,500 musicians playing in more than 350 concerts, this year’s Festival promises to bridge the old with the new and showcase the diversity of jazz. From soul and funk to bebop and blues, the breadth and depth of this outstanding music will be the highlight of the Festival this June. New for this year’s Festival, Nathan Phillips Square will be transformed into a fully licensed 50,000-square-foot patio equipped with FREE Wi-Fi and comfortable seating areas for all. Daily at 3 p.m., the WIFI Patio will feature FREE acoustic roaming performances, making it the perfect place to relax and soak up the sunshine while enjoying live jazz and making Festival memories. The Festival returns to Harbourfront Centre this summer with outstanding performances from two of jazz’s most formidable musicians – pianist Fred Hersch (Monday, June 24) and vocalist Gregory Porter (Thursday, June 27). Downbeat Magazine has called Hersch “one of the small handful of brilliant musicians of his generation,” solidifying his place among the foremost jazz artists in the world today. A superior soloist, accompanist and interpreter of ballads, Hersch has appeared on more than 100 recordings. Porter, the newly crowned king of vocal jazz, has quickly risen to acclaim since his debut in 2010. With a righteous baritone and a voice that can embrace or exhort, caress or confront, Porter’s soulful scatting and warm musicality is reminiscent of Nat King Cole and Donny Hathaway. With one foot in soul and the other firmly planted in jazz, Porter flows with a sense of timelessness that reflects the giants of blues, gospel and soul. Tickets are on sale now at the Harbourfront Box Office or by calling 416.973.4000. Instrumental in defining the sound of hip indie record label Ninja Tune, The Herbaliser brings it diet of hip-hop, rare groove, funk and jazz to The Great Hall on Thursday, June 27. Led by Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba, The Herbaliser has evolved after 10 years from “trip-hop” to now forging a unique sound: a world of Bond films, fragmented samples, brass and dirty drum breaks. The original grand masters of sonic sound have never sounded better. Tickets are on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 1.855.985.5000.

JAMES COTTON, ROBERT GLASPER, DR. LONNIE SMITH AND JASON MORAN

KICKOFF SERIES AT HORSESHOE Toronto – Wednesday, April 24, 2013 ~ The legendary Horseshoe Tavern will play host to the TD Toronto Jazz Festival when it kicks off from June 20 – June 29, 2013. Featuring four artists who have all helped to expand the boundaries of jazz, this series will appeal to all ages and all music fans – with Dr. Lonnie Smith backed by some of the best young musicians in jazz today to Grammy Award-winner Robert Glasper. Tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 1.855.985.5000.

James Cotton – Sunday, June 23 A blues giant who spent a better part of 12 years touring with Muddy Waters before stepping out on his own, James “Mr Superharp” Cotton helped define the modern blues harmonica over the course of his six-decade career. Cotton's trademark moaning, wrenching phrases and train-whistle wails position him among the greatest of all time.

Dr. Lonnie Smith – Monday, June 24 Described by Jazz Times Magazine as “a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a turban,” Dr. Lonnie Smith’s mastery and prowess on the Hammond B-3 organ is unparalleled. Featured on more than 70 albums, he has often been hailed as a living legend, a musical icon and a virtuoso who is the most creative jazz organist.

Robert Glasper Experiment – Tuesday, June 25 Very few musicians are able to deftly straddle the line between jazz and hip-hop, yet Robert Glasper is one of those rare wunderkinds. The Robert Glasper Experiment boldly stakes out new musical territory and transcends any notion of genre, drawing from jazz, hip hop, R&B and rock. Jason Moran’s Fats Waller Dance Party featuring Meshell Ndegeocello – Wednesday, June 26 Pianist Jason Moran teams up with renowned bassist and vocalist Meshell Ndegeocello for a raucous party with an open dance floor and plenty of fun. Reinterpreting the works of Fats Waller, whose music was the soundtrack to the original dance party in the 20s and 30s, the two will transform Waller’s rollicking stride piano style into contemporary dance music.

JAZZ 101 SCHOOL’S IN SESSION FOR SUMMER

Toronto – Wednesday, April 24, 2013 ~ Education takes on a jazzy twist this summer when the TD Toronto Jazz Festival kicks off from June 20 – June 29, 2013. Go beyond the music and explore some of the Festival’s exciting initiatives including workshops, master classes, postsecondary outreach, mentorship and a number of hands-on programs in support of emerging artists and jazz fans of all ages. These initiatives are generously sponsored by the Ken Page Memorial Trust. The Big Band Slam invites four Greater Toronto Area high school big bands to perform at The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar on Thursday, June 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. This showcase will highlight some of the outstanding music being made by high school students across the city. Acclaimed Canadian saxophonist Alex Dean will moderate the Slam and will also perform with each ensemble. The Youth Jazz Showcase gives some exceptional young musicians the chance to show it all off on Friday, June 28, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar. Confirmed performers for the 2013 Showcase are the National Youth Jazz Combo, Chihiro Yamazaki + Route 14, winners from the Sapporo Jazz Festival competition, and, from Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Christian Li. Jazz for the Teach is a two-day seminar led by teachers for teachers and focuses on small group settings and big bands. Led by acclaimed jazz educators and geared toward middle and high school music teachers looking to hone their jazz teaching skills, each session will cover a variety of topics and provide hands-on opportunities for participants. The Artistic Director’s Guide to Jazz seeks to go “beyond the bio,” providing an in-depth personal look at some of the artists performing in the 2013 TD Toronto Jazz Festival. Each week, Artistic Director Josh Grossman details what makes an artist great through personal anecdotes, video clips and more. The TDJ News Corps is an initiative geared toward postsecondary students who are interested in writing about jazz. Successful applicants to the TDJ News Corps program will be given full media accreditation for the Festival, granting them unprecedented access and allowing them to attend and review concerts, interview artists and experience the Festival from behind the scenes. In addition, TDJ News Corps members are assigned a mentor – an experienced music journalist.

TD Toronto Jazz Festival

From its modest beginnings with only three official venues, the Toronto Jazz Festival has grown in 26 years to become the city’s largest music festival attracting over 500,000 people annually to more than 40 venues, clubs and stages all across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). With a rich tradition of presenting the young lions, the jazz greats and tomorrow’s rising stars, the Festival has woven its way into the very fabric of Toronto and become the sound of the city. Since its inception, the Festival has hosted over 26,000 artists, contributed over $460 million to the GTA economy, welcomed over 9 million people, and presented over 2,000 free public concerts. The Festival has drawn some of the biggest names in jazz over the years including internationally renowned artists such as Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Cab Calloway, Sonny Rollins, Ray Charles, Sun Ra, Tony Bennett, Rosemary Clooney, Dr. John, Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Harry Connick Jr., Etta James, Diana Krall, Pat Metheny, Jane Bunnett, Roy Hargrove, Keith Jarrett, Wynton Marsalis, and many more. Responsible for the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, Patrick Taylor serves as Executive Producer and CEO of Toronto Downtown Jazz. Since co-founding the Festival in 1987, Taylor has been Toronto’s primary jazz impresario and has produced other notable events that include the Unique Lives and Experiences Lecture Series and Massey Hall’s 100th Anniversary. A tireless promoter of jazz, Taylor is also actively involved with Jazz Festivals Canada and is a board member of the Ken Page Memorial Trust. He was on the Sponsorship Marketing Council of Canada for the past eight years. A graduate of the University of Toronto Jazz program, Josh Grossman brings invaluable experience to his role as Artistic Director at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. He has previously held the same position at the Markham Jazz Festival and Toronto Jazz Orchestra, the latter of which he also founded and continues to serve. Grossman was the Performance Manager at The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School for four years and has been an administrator, conductor and performer with numerous ensembles in the city.
