Vol. 8 No. 1 - November 2004

Thanksgiving is a joyful time of the year. Americans everywhere join with family and friends to give thanks for the many blessings we enjoy as citizens of this great land. It is a tradition that goes back to our colonial forebears, our Van Bibber ancestors, and it is a celebration that is uniquely American. As we gather with family and friends this year to give thanks for all that we enjoy, I encourage everyone to pause and reflect upon our ancestors who made this day possible.

As I wind down my tenure as your editor for the newsletter over the last four years, I would like to give thanks to everyone who participated in making this publication possible. Without your support the Van Bibber

Pioneers family newsletter would have been know where successful that it is. A special thanks goes out to our webmaster and former editor, Bruce Logan, who does a lot of work behind the scenes in bringing this newsletter to you.

I hope everyone enjoys their Thanksgiving feast with family and friends, and I hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving edition of the Van Bibber Pioneers newsletter.

FIRST SERGEANT REENLISTS ON TOP OFMOUNT SURIBACHI, IWO JIMA

Feb 23 - Fifty years to the day of the American flag raising on top of Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima, First Sergeant Gary R. Hawpe, company First Sergeant, was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps and took the oath of allegiance to the United States, reenlisting for an additional three years.

The word was passed throughout the III Marine Expeditionary Force if there were any Marines up for reenlistment, there was to be a reenlistment ceremony on top of Mt. Suribachi to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the American flag raising during the battle of Iwo Jima.

"The opportunity was there and I went for it," stated Hawpe. "After twenty-one years in the Marine Corps, this has got to be one of my greatest thrills. To stand there and reenlist on top of Mt. Suribachi, knowing that fifty years ago to the day, in the heat of battle, five Marines and a Navy Corpsman took old glory and hosted her up on a pole to signify that the American forces had took Suribachi."

25

Page 26: A free monthly electronic newsletter for the VAN BIBBER ...freepages.rootsweb.com/~blogan/genealogy/v8n1.doc  · Web viewThe word was passed throughout the III Marine Expeditionary

Sixty-two Marines stationed at Iwakuni and Okinawa, Japan took the reenlistment oath from Major General Carlton W. Fulford, Jr., commanding general of III MEF.

The ceremony was opened with the playing of the American and Japanese national anthems, followed by invocation. Opening remarks were made by MajGen Wayne E. Rollins, commanding general of Camp Smedley D. Butler, who later introduced MajGen Fulford.

During the ceremony, Fulford gave and emotional speech about the Marines who gave their lives during the battle.

The discharges were read by SgtMaj. Donald K. Stark, III MEF Sergeant Major.

The sixty-two reenlistees raised their right hands and took the enlisted oath from MajGen Fulford.

A commemoration wreath was laid by the two generals as a 21-gun salute sounded and Taps was played afterwards. The solemn event ended with the retiring of the colors as Marines looked on from where men fought so bravely 50 years ago.

A tour of Iwo Jima preceded the reenlistment ceremony for the sixty-two reenlistees and over 200 visitors who came along to see the hallowed ground Marines before them had fought and died on.

The tour visited Requiem Hill, a memorial to the war dead of both nations, Tenzan Memorial, erected by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare, Marine Corps cemetery marker, located on the site of the former cemetery of the 3rd and 4th Marine Division used during the battle. Also visited were LtGen Kuribayashi's Headquarter cave, Sandstone monument, Invasion beach, Japanese naval guns and the 40 th Anniversary memorial which was dedicated in 1985 during a ceremony attended by American and Japanese survivors who put their differences behind them; meeting in peace and friendship.

On top of Mt. Suribachi the touring party was able to view various monuments to include the memorial for Sgt Genaust, who filmed the famous flag raising as Joe Rosenthal shot his famous photo.

"This is something that I will long remember," stated Hawpe. "It was a motivating experience to stand there and reenlist on top of Mt. Suribachi and tour the island, learning about the battle itself."
