The French war for democracy that began in 1789 and ended with the overthrow of the government.

French Revolution

1793-1794 Robespierre ruled France as a dictator and executed thousands of opponents.

Reign of Terror

A comprehensive and uniform system of laws developed for the French people by Napoleon.

Napoleonic Code

Belief that people should be loyal to their nation. A nation is a group of people with similar culture & heritage.

Nationalism

Meetings held after Napoleon’s defeat to establish lasting peace and security in Europe by creating a balance of power among the countries of Europe, restoring the monarchies of Europe, and creating a new political map of Europe.

Congress of Vienna

A political situation in no one nation is strong enough to threaten the others.

Balance of Power

A political philosophy adopted by the middle class that stressed more political power for parliament and expanded voting rights.

Liberalism

A political philosophy embraced by wealthy property owners and nobility which favored protecting traditional monarchies of Europe.

Conservatism

Leader of the committee of Public safety. He ruled France as a dictator and executed those opposed to his policies.

Maximilien Robespierre

16th – Incompetent king of France. Executed during the French revolution.

Louis XVI

Made himself emperor of France following the revolution and attempted to unify Europe under French domination.

Napoleon Bonaparte

Upper middle class business owner. Member of the 3rd estate.

Bourgeoisie

“Blow to the state” A swift overthrow off government.

Coup détat (Coup)

Radical group led by Robespierre that identified and executed “enemies of the state”

Committee of Public safety

The social and political system in place in France before the French revolution.

Old regime

A 3 tiered system of social classification in place in France before the French Revolution.

Estate

A pledge by the National Assembly that they would continue meeting until they had drawn up a new constitution fro France.

Tennis Court Oath

An assembly of representatives from the 3 estates in which the system of representation was unequal.

Estates General

A policy by napoleon to cut off trade between continental Europe and great Britain in an effort to weaken the British economy.

Continental System

The battle at which Napoleon met his final defeat.

Waterloo

A prison in Paris that was “stormed” by revolutionaries when they stole guns and ammunition. This event is considered the beginning of the French Revolution.
