Going Retro! A Fun Salute to Music of the Early 1900’s

2:30pm, July 27th, 2014 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre - 4401 W. 8th Street, Los Angeles

John Reed-Torres Janet Klein (and her Parlor Boys) Tony Wilson

LATOS presents an exciting and unique variety show featuring popular artists including Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys, ragtime pianist, John Reed-Torres, theatre organist, Tony Wilson and guitarist, Angie Hougen, who will perform a wonderful and upbeat variety of music from the early to mid 1900s.

Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys will perform foxtrots, standards, roaring twenties and more. They perform the songs in their original style, transporting their audiences along the way. Janet’s Parlor Boys are an all-star line-up of great musicians playing banjos, trombones, trumpets, violins, piano and more. Janet Klein will take you back to a gentler time with her quirky and clever style of entertainment. Her interpretative take on songs from the 1910's, 20's and 30's will draw you in. Her reverence for a bygone era and ability to make it come alive will be a rare treat for the sentimentalist in all of us.

Tony Wilson has performed concerts throughout the United States and in Europe, including local concerts at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, the Orpheum Theatre, the Old Town Music Hall, and at the ATOS National Convention in 2012. Tony will perform a variety of music on LATOS’ own 3 manual/13 rank Barton theatre pipe organ including standards, pops, and a classical piece. He will also perform a duet with guitarist, Angie Hougen.

John Reed-Torres is the best of a group of young pianists that have made names for themselves at concerts locally and abroad. John is a prolific composer of ragtime, following in the footsteps of ragtime greats such as Scott Joplin and James Scott, but with his own unique and creative style.

This event is being held to thank our Members and FOTOs for their loyalty, and will include:

11:00am to 1:15pm Open Console on the fabulous 4-manual/27-rank theatre pipe organ. There will be a person available to help with registration to insure an unforgettable experience playing the “the real thing”.

After a break, the theatre will re-open for a Movie Matinee with the silent feature film, “Blood and Sand”, starring Rudolph Valentino, and accompanied on the theatre pipe organ by

LATOS Member Appreciation Day, continued:

Bill Field. The matinee will include organ music and a sing-along.

We are trying to arrange an earlier time for those who do not play or are shy about playing. This could be a good photo opportunity at the console.

This Member Appreciation event will be complimentary for the first 100 LATOS Members or FOTOs who RSVP by sending an email to [email protected] Angie Hougen will respond to all RSVP emails, and will include check-in information to those who are among the first 100 to RSVP. She will also provide wait-list info for those who respond late. The theatre itself cannot accept RSVPs for this event.

Theatre admission will only be $10 each for non-member guests and only $8 each for non-member seniors over 62 (cash only/no credit cards). If you RSVP ‘with a guest’, please provide the name of the guest to Angie so she can plan the space ahead of time. Of course, guests are welcome to attend the open console, but will need to directly pay the theatre for their admission at the time that they attend the matinee (you do not have to pay for guests in advance).

Look for a map and directions in the August issue. See you then!

Henry Hunt Recognized by AGO an Editorial by Tony Wilson

I was thrilled when I heard that Henry Hunt was recognized by the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Guild of Organists with a framed congratulatory certificate for his significant role in the organ community that has spanned a period of over 50 years.

The certificate (next page) highlights Henry’s notable accomplishments, but there is more to Henry Hunt that some people do not know.

Henry was Lyn Larsen and Stan Kann’s Manager (and close friend) for many years.

He was like family to Virgil Fox and Carlo Curley, and worked with them regularly.

Henry travelled extensively with Virgil Fox, and was able to witness (up close) sights, sounds and history that most of us would have thought unattainable. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3…

The Organ Log – July, 2014 PAGE 2

Henry Hunt Recognized by AGO, continued:

Henry Hunt worked with Marian Cook, Gordon Belt and others on endowment and restoration projects for theatre pipe organs that resulted in instruments being saved, and (in many cases) used on a regular basis.

What I’ve just described barely scratches the surface of Henry’s amazing career and music life.

Henry has now retired as a dealer for the Allen Organ Company, and Mark Herman has moved to California with his crew to open the Los Angeles Organ Company. The company will represent, sell and service Allen organs, and conduct other organ-related business. Henry has also retired from his role with other organizations as well.

Henry Hunt’s plan moving forward is what we all wish for. That is to enjoy his friends and music, to travel locally and abroad, go to concerts, kick around with his sweet little dog named Ellie, and (above all) to not have a schedule.

I was taken aback by the lack of recognition by one organization that Henry worked with for many years - whose farewell was underwhelming at best. It is for this reason (and others) that I am ecstatic about the wonderful recognition that Henry received from the American Guild of Organists.

My most sincere best wishes go to my friend and colleague, Henry Hunt. And I look forward to seeing him fulfill his next set of dreams in his many years ahead.

Respectfully,

Tony Wilson
