Our Chairman From Dean's Desk Un AperÇu depicts some important activities

undertaken in the last one year. From a focus of student - first, to diversifying activities of campus development, animal health services in the Teaching Veterinary Hospital training the farmers, building collaboration and exchange programmes with Universities, the year was vibrant with activities.

Mineral mixture, Poultry feed, Panchakavya production and distribution, Farm development, Participation in government programmes, Capacity building of faculty - RIVER is trying its best to serve the society.

In the last year the admission is given to 80 students based on the MSVE 2016 regulations. The support of the Government of Puducherry, Pondicherry University and The Veterinary Council of India has helped to improve the quality of services delivered from this Institution.

Considering the many number of diverse news reported last year, the editorial committee had the task of picking up few which are relevant and have tried to open the window to glimpse on what happened in RIVER.

RIVER is focussing to bring out quality Veterinary doctors who can serve globally to extend services for animal health.

I hope the activities of RIVER such as hospital training to the students benefitting farmers, producing mineral mixture, farm development, participation in the Government programmes, exchange programmes with Universities will give fruitful results to the students and farming community.

GRADUATION DAY – 2018

th thRIVER organized Graduation day for 20 batch of UG students on 14 November 2018 in the Conference hall. Hon'ble Chief Minister, Thiru. V. Narayanasamy was the Chief Guest and handed over the Provisional Degree Certificates to the 56 graduates (Girls 32, Boys 24). Hon'ble Animal Husbandry Minister, Thiru.A.Namassivayam presided over the function. Thiru. A. Anbarasu, IAS, Development Commissioner cum Secretary (AH&AW) felicitated the function. Dr. C. Balachandran, Hon'ble Vice- Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Chennai delivered the Graduation Day address. The occasion paved opportunity to all new graduates, their parents, faculty members and other students of RIVER come together to witness the ceremony. The Meritorius students Ms. Brinda and Ms. Bhargavi Chidambaram with highest OGPA in UG programme were awarded with medals.

KALNADAI SELVAM – FARMERS NEWSLETTER LAUNCHED

Shri Tarun Shridhar, IAS, Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Govt. of India, New Delhi had interaction with farmers who were

thattending the 13 training programme of NABARD-FSPF on 14.06.2018 at RIVER. He released “Kalnadai Selvam” of RIVER - the first Newsletter in Tamil for the benefit of farmers aimed at updating their technical knowledge in livestock farming. Development Commissioner cum Chairman - PVCS, Secretary Fisheries, Secretary Co-operatives graced the occasion.

VISIT OF DIGINITARIES

New Dining Halls Inaugurated

Dr.Y. Haribabu, Vice-Chancellor, Sri Venketeswara Veterinary University, Tirupati inaugurated the renovated New Dining Halls of Ladies and Gents hostel of RIVER on 20-12-2018. This additional dining hall can accommodate 75 students.

Collaboration with Purdue University initiated

Visit of Director NAARM :

Prof. Sanjeev Narayanan and Dr.Suma Rao, faculty from Purdue University, USA visited RIVER on 29.10.2018 and 30.01.2019 respectively to initiate the students exchange programme between RIVER and Purdue Varsity. Accordingly 3 students from RIVER shall have externship in Purdue and students' from Purdue will have study programme in RIVER.

Dr. Kumar Venkitanarayan, Associate Dean, Research and Graduate studies, University of Connecticut, USA - a regular academic visitor delivered a lecture on “The use of phytochemicals for controlling infectious diseases” on 10.09.2018. He also participated in the interactive session on Opportunities for RIVER students in Connecticut.

Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director, National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM) Hyderabad made stopover to see our institute as a special Guest on 04.09.2018. He visited the exhibition hall, farms, herbal garden and offered suggestions for development.

COLLEGE ANNUAL DAY

EXTERNSHIP PROGRAMME & COLLABORATION

On 31.10.2018 the college day was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Shri. Abhijit Vijay Chaudhari, I.A.S., District Collector, Puducherry, Mr. Bala Gandhi, Director (Agriculture) and Dr. Subba Rao, Director (AH & AW), Govt. of Puducherry felicitated the gathering. Dr. S. Ramkumar, Dean, presented the annual report of the institute. President of Student Council Mr. David and Secretary Mr. Rajan were present. The college magazine “RIVET” was released. Awards and Prizes were distributed to students who excelled in curricular, Arts & literary ZEST 2019, Sports and games. The programme ended with the colourful cultural programmes presented by the students.

DVM students (12) of University of Malaysia, Kelentan underwent the externship clinical training in RIVER from 16-07-18 to 10-08-18.

DVM students (95) from Hajee Mohammad Danesh Sciences and Technology University, Dinajpur, Bangladesh underwent clinical training from 09-03-18 to 10-04-18 in two batches. Externship programme for the next set of students commenced from 16.02.2019.

provide information to the livestock farmers in collaboration with AH &AW Department, Puducherry.

RIVER Launches Loan Linked Training with Bank

Bankers-Dairypreneurs meet was organised with the collaboration of Lead District Bank (Indian Bank), Puducherry on 07.12.2018 to enhance the benefit of the trainings. It was a vital final step to their 7- days skill development training programme funded by NABARD. About 120 trained dairy farmers/ dairypreneurs participated in the first programme.

Eight bank branches, from Indian bank, Puduvai Bharathiyar Gram Bank and Syndicate bank opened their facilitating centres at RIVER. Separate sessions were arranged for dairypreneurs to meet their respective bankers to assess their eligibility and avail loans on the spot. Bankers have facilitated to form Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) village wise. This group approach made them easy to sanction loan on the spot. About 100 participants were sanctioned loans.

Thiru. A. Anbarasu, IAS, Chairman, PVCS cum Development Commissioner, Govt. of Puducherry inaugurated the Bankers- Dairypreneurs meet. Dr. S.Sundaravadivelu, IAS, delivered the special address. The Zonal Manager, Indian Bank and SLBC coordinator Thiru B. Veeraragavan explained the process of availing loan as a citizen and also appreciated the new efforts of RIVER in linking the trainees with the bankers to ensure the possibility of availing loan. Lead District Manager Thiru S. Chandrasekar felicitated the gathering.

Kalnadai Kural - The 24x7 Info Service for farmers Launched

to Arignar Anna Zoological Park was organised on 24.11.2018 for 53 final year students. Zoo Veterinarians including Dr. Kalaignan - an Alumnus of RIVER demonstrated various aspects of handling of zoo animals.

A total of 54 Final year students (30 boys & 24 girls) accompanied by Dr. N. Arul Jothi, Professor and Dr. K. Rajkumar, Assistant Professor undertook an All India Educational tour from 18.04.2018 to 05.05.2018. The students visited many institutions like IVRI, NDRI etc.

CPDO Funded Poultry Training

ATMA Trainings for Mahe and Yanam farmers

Training on SPSS

Second and third skill development trainings each of 6 days duration funded by Central Poultry Development Organisation, Govt. of India were given from 24 – 29 .09.2018 and from 18 – 23.03.2019. A total of 60 trainees were trained.

The institute organised ATMA trainings within state for 20 farmers each from Yanam (28.05.2018 to 01.06.2018) and Mahe (09.07.2018 to 13.07.2018) in collaboration with Project Directorate, ATMA, Puducherry. The focus of training was on improving the productivity of dairy cattle.

The Department of Animal Genetics and Breeding conducted training on Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) for M.V.Sc. students and faculty from 08.03.2019 to 09.03.2019. A total of 37 participants got the hands-on training. Prof. R. Ganesan led the programme.

ATMA Interstate Training programmes were also organised at RIVER campus for trainees from Palladam Block of Tirupur district (19.07.2018- 21.07.2018) and Kinathukadavu Block of Coimbatore district (10.10.2018- 12.10.2018).

A fodder production scheme for the distribution of green fodder to the needy farmers of Puducherry was initiated on 14-4-2018. Fresh green fodder - Co5 is being sold to the dairy farmers.

Vermicompost Unit and Panchagavaya unit are established to prepare value added organic manure from farm wastes. The manure is used in the organic vegetable cultivation in the campus and also being sold.

1. Kadaknath Breeding unit has been started with 200 birds. Day old chicks are being sold to farmers.

2. Country Chicken Unit and Rabbit Breeding Unit have been established for sale and demonstration purpose.

3. Fodder Demo Units: Dept. of Animal Nutrition has established a model Azolla cultivation unit and a hydrophonic unit for creating awareness among landless farmers as an alternative for green fodder. In addition to this, Fodder Demonstration Plots with nine fodder varieties have been established.

The department of Veterinary and AH Extension organised 6 trainings from April to August 2018 to complete the 16 skill development trainings for 486 trainees. The participants include 304 existing dairy farmers and 182 prospective Dairypreneurs from 123 villages. These 7 days skill development trainings were supported by NABARD - Farm Sector Promotion Fund (FSPF) with the total outlay of 9.96 lakhs. It was aimed at improving the Dairy Husbandry skills of people, helping them to improve the milk production to meet the milk supply of the UT of Puducherry. The participants were considered for the health with loan programme.

Independence Day was celebrated in a befitting manner by staff and studens of RIVER. Dean, RIVER hoisted the National Flag and reminded on the sacrifice and contribution made by our great leaders to build our strong Nation.

Director, Bioclon Biotech Pvt. Ltd. Chennai delivered a guest lecture on Self employment in Biotechnology to motivate the students to choose the career. Mrs. Smitha, Director, Department of Science & Technology and Environment distributed the prizes to the winners of competitions. This programme was sponsored by DST. Puducherry. Prof. S. Ramkumar, Dean delivered presidential address.

Aimed at documenting various species of birds and creating awareness on the importance of birds in the planet and its existence was celebrated in Puducherry on 11-05-2018. Two speakers, Mr. Ravikumar, Project Coordinator, SPCA, Kodaikkanal and Mr. Azharudeen, Education Programme Co-ordinator, Wildlife Nature and Conservation Trust (WNCT) delivered talks on 'Endemic birds' to the students and faculty of RIVER.

Wold Earth Day was celebrated on 22.04.2018 by organizing painting and poetry competitions among the students of RIVER. ROTARACT club and NSS volunteers planted sapling in the Zone A to mark the importance of green cover to protect Mother Earth and environment.

The Department of Veterinary Pathology organized lectures on Oral Cancer in Man by Dr. Bhanuprakash, Oncologist, JIPMER and Oral Cancer in Dogs and Cats by Dr. R. Kumar, Professor, RIVER.

Institute Hosted the Intercollegiate Pondicherry University Competitions on Volley ball and Shuttle Badminton

was organised on 02-11-2018 at Hotel Tamizh Park, Pondicherry in which a total of 18 Indian and Multinational pharmaceutical companies exhibited and presented their products for the benefit of the interns.

Mattupongal was celebrated on 12.01.2019 by students' council in which the faculty, staff, students and farmers participated. Various games and competitions were held as part of the celebrations.

2019 was held on 08.02.2019 in sports complex. Chief guest Professor Dr. Ajithkumar Renowned Cardiologist, JIPMER, Puducherry gave away prizes to the winners. Third year students won the overall championship and the final year were the runner-up.

Mr. Nimish Nitin Walke student of RIVER has won II prize in 50 & 100 m - Breast stroke Swimming in Inter Collegiate. He also represented the Pondicherry University (swimming–men)) in All India Inter University tournament held at Jain University, Bangalore during October 2018.

Mr. Prasanth. P (cricket-men), Ms. Rashvita Ramdas Naik (cricket-women), Mr. M Naresh (chess-men) and Mr. S Aravind (handball-men) represented the Pondicherry University for the South Zone Inter University tournament held in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Puducherry on 19.11.2018. Officials Dr Sundarrasu, state PO, NVBDCP, Dr Ganesan, AD (Malaria), Dr Nalini and Dr Priya, delivered lectures on this occasion. Hostel Warden made arrangements to distribute Nilavembu Kudineer to all.

In collaboration with Dept. of School Education, Puducherry, RIVER initiated a new programme of opening the campus and educational facilities to School Children on prior appointment. Two schemes of visit were programmed. “Open Day for School Children” from January to March 2019.

They had opportunity to see the science museums of different departments, farm complex, fish pond and herbal garden along with experts' explanation on various topics pertaining to Veterinary science. There was a positive feedback from students and teachers.

The Summer Camp for School children “Selfie with Nature” was organised in collaboration with the Dept. of Tourism, Puducherry. It gave them an opportunity to see and learn through animals in the farm, birds of diversity, plants, fish pond, veterinary hospital, PONLAIT and Krishi Vigyan Kendra. The camp was conducted in four

at RIVER Campus was organized jointly by the NSS unit and the Students' Council on 21.3.2019. Dr. Kavita Vasudevan, M.D., Professor & Head, Dept. of Community Medicine, Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Puducherry delivered a lecture to create awareness on AIDS.

Students' council organized camp with the help of Apollo Dental care on 08.01.2019 that was well utilized by all.

batches wherein children from 15 schools participated. “Catching the fish and leaving it back” gave happiness and a different experience. “Touching the bones and arranging them as a model” and multiplication of cell seen under the microscope” were few statements of excitement quoted by many children. Prof. R. Kumar, coordinated these Summer camp programme.

The new team of Rotaract club was installed on 20/11/2018. Aaqib Javeed and Dayana Priyadharshini assumed charges as President and Secretary. On the same day 11 blood donors were honoured. Blankets were distributed to the patients at Regional Cancer Centre JIPMER, Puducherry. Rotaract members celebrated their birthdays and Christmas at various homes for children and elders by distributing sweets and clothes.

thTo mark the 25 anniversary of RIVER, Students' Council with Rotaract initiated the series of inspirational talks by eminent speakers under the

name of “JAGRUTI” (means awakening). The first talk on 'Self image' was given by Sri Rishi Gupta, a corporate trainer on 10.01.2019. The second talk was on 'Oral cancer awareness' by Dr. Bhanuprakash, Oncologist, JIPMER.

'The journey of a special needs child' was delivered on 13.03.2019 by Ms. Chitra Shah, Founder & Director, Satya Special School, Puducherry.

MENTOR VET AWARD

Award for the 'Best Mentor Field Veterinarian' was initiated in 2018 for the field veterinarians who had contributed and helped the interns to identify and present the field cases in the best scientific way.

Dr. Kumaran VAS, Madagadipet and Dr. Sampath, VAS, Karaikal received Best Mentor Vet award-2018 for mentoring interns Ms. Bhargavi and Mr. Hariharan respectively.

The Third General Body meeting of Alumni was held in the Sunway Grand Hotel on 20.05.2018 and website was launched on the same day with the web address r-ralumni.org. About 30 alumni participated in the meet.
