ALUMNI NEWS

ACADEMICALLY SPEAKING

GIVING

Dear Friends,

As we anticipate the arrival of spring, we prepare to welcome the Class of 2021 to St. Agnes Academic High School. Whether bidding farewell to seniors or welcoming new freshmen, one thing remains constant, our commitment to academic excellence that has long been the tradition of the Sisters of St. Dominic.

Innovation and opportunity define all we do at St. Agnes. Partnerships with Molloy College, St. John’s University and SUNY Albany provide opportunities for students to explore science, math, film and theatre while receiving college credit. This fall, our expanding STEM Program will provide Chromebooks for students and teachers giving them the tools to travel beyond the physical walls of our classrooms. At the same time, we continue to expand and upgrade facilities to meet the demands of our changing world.

While St. Agnes strives to exceed academic expectations, we remain committed to helping every young woman graduate, regardless of financial hardship. The Angel Program, started by a few generous alumni, continues to provide financial aid to deserving students who need our help.

Thank you for your continued prayers and for your financial support of St. Agnes. Your generosity lights the way for future generations to share in the charism of prayer, study, community and service. We are grateful every day for every gift.

May God continue to bless you and your families.

Sincerely,

Susan NicoleiSusan NicolettiPrincipal

CAREER DAYSt. Agnes Welcomes Alumni For Career DaySt. Agnes had the pleasure of welcoming back our alumni for Career Day. We hope our students are inspired by their fields and careers as they continue to grow and find their own passions. From nurses, EMTs, and pharmacists, to chefs, lawyers, and psychologists, alumni in attendance provided a wide range of careers for students to learn about. Our alumni have inspired our students as they have pursued careers with the NYPD, DSNY, and the DEA.

Mayra Gonzalez ’75 and Ann Jappell Steinbronn ‘75 Still “Live Wires” “Ann and I met freshman year at St. Agnes and became friends almost immediately. In our senior year they voted us “live wires.” Even though we lead totally different lives (Ann has been married a long time with 3 children and 2 grandchildren and lives in California and I am single and live in NY still (Long Island), we have managed to stay in constant contact all these years. We talk on the phone almost every day. Ann teaches kindergarten and I am a manager for an Information Technology department at a Fortune 150 company, Arrow Electronics, Inc.” – Mayra Gonzalez ‘75

Mayra and Ann, best friends since attending St. Agnes, would like to plan a “Paint Night” for the Class of 1975. If you are interested, please contact Ann at [email protected] and Mayra at [email protected].

Announcing: Google Chromebooks

Imagine watching a video about the Russian Revolution while exploring the landscape and listening to the music of that era. What was the role of women in the Revolution? Who were the leaders? How did they define success?

These and so many more questions will be answered this fall when St. Agnes expands the use of Chromebooks and Google Classroom. Google Chromebook, a mobile device that runs on the Chrome Operating System has no software to down-load. Files are stored in the cloud and are accessed wherev-er wifi is available. Students will use Chromebooks to work collaboratively, take notes, access assignments, communicate with teachers and peers, and store their files. Chromebooks will provide a platform to expand learning way beyond the traditional classroom.

Flora Sengupta ‘19 will be fully immersed in college life this summer as she attends the Harvard University Secondary School Program. With an interest in psychol-ogy, medical ethics, and architectural design, Flora will at-

tain eight college credits in this seven-week summer session. Flora will be attending classes with current Harvard students, other high school students, and professionals from all around the world. She will have the op-portunity to work with professors, lecturers, scientists, and more.

St. Agnes’ new partnership with Molloy College is off to a great start. In October, the Human Biology class visited CERCOM (Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Ocean Monitoring.) Under the direction of Dr. John T. Tanacredi, Professor and Director of CERCOM, students

explored the habitat and ecological challenges of horseshoe crabs. Also in October, Business Professors Stephen Bier and Andrea Barone, along with Kimberly Vereline of Admissions came to St. Agnes to offer semi-nars on college readiness, college choice, the interview process, and the importance of resumes. Students were then invited to participate in an on-site admissions visit at Molloy College.

Students interested in video production and journalism had two excellent opportunities, a TV Studio workshop at St. Agnes hosted by Professor Thomas Kenny, Instructor and Director of Media Facilities, and Professor Nicole Stevens, and a New Media workshop hosted by Profes-sor James Cohen, New Media Program Coordinator, and Professor Matt Applegate, Assistant Professor of English & Digital Humanities. Upcoming workshops with Molloy College include: The Master Class Theater Workshop, Law and Order Seminar; and The Career Workshop for Parents.

Rising juniors interested in majoring in business have been invited to apply to The Molloy College Business Boot Camp for the Summer of 2017. Together with Molloy’s talented faculty, St. Agnes’ Juniors will engage in interactive seminars, trading simulations, and market-ing competitions.

Born on June 3, 1942 in New York City to Mary and Howard McCauley, Cecilia was the eldest of four children (Cele, Joe, Susan & Phil) and the first of 54 cousins. Growing up on 36th Street in Astoria, family was always at the center of Cele’s life. She graduated with honors from St. Joseph’s School in 1955 and enrolled at St. Agnes Academic High School.

Cele excelled in academics and discovered a passion for teaching. After graduating from St. Agnes, she taught in Catholic elementary schools while earning her Bachelor of Science degree at Fordham University in the evening. She was named to Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges and received her Master of Science degree from St. John’s University. Cele later taught at St. Fidelis and St. Joseph’s elementary schools. She also taught high school at Christ the King, St. John’s Prep, and Social Studies and English at St. Agnes where she also coached cheerleading. She later spent 15 years at William Cullen Bryant High School.

A devoted parishioner of St. Gabriel’s Parish, Cele served on the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister. She was an avid reader

and loved to travel, visiting five continents and over 25 European countries. Paris was her favorite city.

Cele cherished her relationships with the students, faculty and friends she met at St. Agnes Academic High School. She wanted to help other girls by providing scholarship funding in her estate. Her hope was to offer financial assistance to a graduate of St. Joseph’s who was a current student at St. Agnes. Cele’s brother Joe, moved by her decision and impressed by the School she had grown to love so much, decided to match her contribution. Together, they created the Cecilia McCauley Scholarship Fund.

St. Agnes Academic High School will be forever grateful to our alumna, teacher and dear friend Cecilia McCauley whose thoughtful generosity changed the lives of deserving students nearly 60 years after she first entered her beloved school.

For more information about how you can create a scholarship or make a donation to the Angel Program, please contact Denise Fetonte at (718) 353-6276. ext. 30.

When Cecilia McCauley entered St. Agnes Academic High School in September of 1955, she was unaware that she was about to begin an education that would prepare her for a lifetime of accomplishments.

St. Agnes Academic High School has created The Veritas Society as a way to formally and publically thank generous alumni and friends who have remembered the School in their estate plans.

Making a planned gift is a wonderful way to support St. Agnes while accommodating your personal, financial and philanthropic goals. With smart planning, you may actually increase the size of your estate and reduce the tax burden on your heirs while making a meaningful financial contribution. You can honor a loved one, a family member, a classmate or a beloved member of the faculty by providing funds for scholarships, academic programs, athletics and facilities in their names.

Welcome Home Alumni!Reunions and anniversaries are great opportunities to strengthen relationships with old friends and reconnect with St. Agnes. We were delighted to see many familiar faces and some new ones at the Reunion on November 19 when St. Agnes honored two distinguished alumnae, Dorothy Vance Forte and Geraldine Hapke for their professional and personal accomplishments. Both Dorothy and Geraldine are living examples of how St. Agnes prepares young women for success in high school, college and life. Save the date for next year’s Reunion on November 18, 2017.

The Class of 1966 gathered onstage as they celebrated the 50th anniversary of their graduation.

Geraldine Hapke ‘62 (top right) Hall of Fame Honoree.

(l-r) Robert Gillin ‘42 and Anthony Barone (Honorary Graduate

2016) reminiscing about the good

old days.

Dorothy Vance Forte ‘68 (top left) Hall of Fame Honoree.

Class of 1971

Members of the Class of 2006 celebrated their 10th anniversary.

Marie Bissmann ‘67 and Paula Miano ‘70 reunited “freshman senior sisters.”
