The European Fish Price Report, based on information supplied by industry correspondents, aims to provide guidance on broad price trends. Price information is indicative and should be used only for forecasting medium- and long-term trends. FAO is not responsible for any errors or omissions.

LATEST TRENDS The major event defining current market trends in the UK and the EU as a whole is the referendum vote in the UK to exit the EU. Although the UK economy took a hit in the immediate aftermath of the surprise result, the full impact of the decision is yet to become clear. As the UK government now has two years to negotiate the terms of the country’s departure, there are many possible scenarios that will have varying implications for its fishing industry and its competitiveness on the export market.

Polish cod catches were reportedly low this month, which has led to increased prices. Demand is reported to be weak, which is normal for this time of year.

The supply situation for wet-salted cod fillets from frozen raw material (Gadus macrocephalus) is stable while demand is starting to increase. The market is betting on an increase of prices during the main consumption period in the autumn.

Cod catches in the Faroe Islands are reported to be relatively poor as the fishing fleets are focusing more on ling and brosme. This will lead to a shortage of wet-salted cod fillets (Gadus morhua) with price increases the likely result.

In Iceland the catch quota for cod is almost exhausted, with approximately 8% remaining. The new quota will be allocated in September. Prices are starting to increase.

This year stockfish producers have paid higher prices to the fishermen for cod raw material. It is expected that there will be a further hike in prices during the autumn.

The ling market is quite stable. There have been good catches and high consumption of the product, and prices have remained stable since the spring.

Prices for hake fillets blocks have remained flat compared with last year, while prices for hake mince blocks have increased quite substantially recently due to very strong demand coupled with a supply shortage and they can be expected to continue rising.

Cultured turbot prices are very high, especially for the larger sizes such as 2-3 kg. Further price hikes are likely as the tourist season in Spain creates additional demand.

Low demand for canned tuna is reported from the main consuming countries. In the case of Europe this is quite unusual, as canned tuna is a summer food item. However, the bad weather in Northern Europe, with low temperatures and plenty of rain, is likely the cause of lower tuna consumption in the UK, Germany and France, resulting in limited overall demand for finished products. As a result, canneries have been processing less, demand for raw material has declined and prices have fallen.

The 4-month FAD closure in the Western and Central Pacific started on July 1. Fishing prior to the FAD closure was reported to be good. Since then, fishing has slowed down to a moderate level. Thai canneries continue to report healthy raw material inventories while production activities remain slow due to low demand for finished goods.

Fishing in the Eastern Pacific remains moderate, although there has been no change in the yellowfin shortage situation. Raw material inventories are reported to be healthy while production is low due to the lack of orders for finished goods. Prices for Ecuadorian, EU-eligible skipjack has decreased slightly, while the yellowfin price remains steady as there has been no change in the supply situation. The two-month IATTC ‘veda’ closure will begin on July 29.

Fishing in the Indian Ocean has improved to a moderate level and local canneries are reporting healthy raw material inventories. As a result of the improved catches and also the price trend in Bangkok, skipjack and yellowfin prices have decreased in Mahe.

Fishing in the Atlantic Ocean is now reported to be moderate as the weather has improved. Raw material inventories at local canneries are adequate.

As the supply of fish from the Indian and Atlantic Ocean has improved, European whole and loin prices for skipjack and yellowfin have fallen.

Small pelagic landings are always a mixed bag. Herring landings in the Baltic Sea are reportedly low, and prices have risen. On the other hand, sprat landings have been good, and this has resulted in a price decline.

The 2016 squid season off South America has been a major disappointment for the sector thus far. Landings are dramatically down, especially in the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), so much so that the authorities are considering reimbursing licence fees. As a result of the poor landings, prices are up by more than 30%.

The South African squid season reopened on July 1, but catches have been very poor. Although there have not been any sales yet, there is a feeling that the generally tight supply situation will result in a firming price trend. At the same time, however, there is an understanding that prices will be tempered by economic and political uncertainties.

It seems that the abundance of shrimp in the Argentine shrimp fishery has been less than last year, requiring more hours trawling per lance. This situation has led to the opening of the fishing zone situated on parallel 44, a month earlier than in 2015.

In view of longer trawls and new fishing areas, shrimp catches have reportedly been good and total landings of shrimp in Argentina during the first half of the year were 20% higher than in the same period of last year. Despite this huge increase in availability, prices in Europe have stayed stable as demand from Asia - especially China and Japan - and the USA is strong. Ecuadorian shrimp production this year is steady, and reported price levels are stable.

Shrimp supply is lower from Thailand and Viet Nam this year, which should lead to price increases. Indonesian shrimp is in good supply, with strong local demand reported during the Ramadan period and the Eid Al Fikr.

Crab fishing has begun and prices are trending downward, as is normal for this time of year. Demand is quite strong due to the holiday season, especially in Spain.

The European lobster season has just started and prices in general are declining. However, the present price level of EUR 16.00/kg is slightly higher than the last year’s price.

On the other hand, the spring lobster season in Canada was tough this year. Landings were much lower compared to the years before. The lobsters weren’t moving around that much because of cold water temperatures and the weather was often too bad and windy for the fishermen to go out fishing. The shortage of lobster resulted in very high prices.

The new bouchot season has started in France, but there is still good availability of Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Danish mussels on the French market. The French Barfleur bottom season has been suspended for 2016 due to low densities caused by mortalities. Some Bouchot growing regions have also been severely affected by mortalities with strong regional variations in rates of mortality. The Dutch season began earlier this year with Dutch rope mussels being harvested in early June and the bottom mussel season began on June 29. This is around 2 weeks earlier than usual due to more favourable climatic conditions for growth.

Chile has reported a shortage of large size mussels. The widespread occurrence of red tide has also led to a reduction in mussel production, which, combined with strong demand, is leading to higher prices.

European farmed salmon prices have continued their seemingly unstoppable climb upwards in July, taking another leap above what were already unprecedented levels. In week 27 of 2016, the NASDAQ salmon index for Norwegian farmed Atlantic salmon was at NOK 75.7/KG, almost double the level seen in the same week in 2015. An acute shortage of larger fish in recent weeks has driven up the price for these sizes even higher, with 9+ kg fish fetching an average price of NOK 92.7/kg in the same week. Export revenue have inevitably been boosted by high prices, and recently released figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) put the total value of Norwegian salmon exports at NOK 27.9 billion for the first six months of 2016, 28% higher than the same period in 2015, despite lower production and lower total export volume. The EU market, and particularly France and Poland, is still by far the most important destination for Norwegian salmon, but other markets such as the US and various countries in Southeast Asia continue to increase their share of Norwegian export volume. In the UK, prices for Scottish farmed salmon are being pushed upwards similarly to their Norwegian counterparts, causing some panic in the processing sector over the cost of raw material.

The current price level is alarming for many in the industry, and looking forward there is little potential for any significant relief in the form of increased supply volumes. A recent report released by Norwegian bank Nordea estimates a 6.4% drop in total global supply of farmed Atlantic salmon in 2016, with low growth predicted over the next 3 years. This means it will effectively take until 2020 until global supply is above what it was in 2015, but while production stands still, global demand continues to grow even as major markets such as Brazil and Russia suffer economic difficulties and reduced consumer spending. Forward prices at FishPool are now above NOK 50/kg for almost every month until 2019, reflecting the market’s understanding of the expanding gap between demand and supply. In the shorter term, the current price spike should be halted with increased harvest volumes in August and September, before seasonal demand drags prices upwards once again towards the end of the year.

Salmon is not the only aquaculture sector performing well in Norway currently, as the farmed trout industry has shown a remarkable recovery since the shock of the disappearance of its major market, Russia, in August 2014. Harvest volumes have been relatively high recently, but prices have not been negatively impacted, pointing to strong demand from a range of markets such as Japan, Belarus, Poland, the US and Thailand. In fact, NSC put total export revenue from Norwegian trout exports in the first half of 2016 103% higher than in the same period at 2015, at NOK 978 million. With biomasses in the pens now lower than the previous two years, trout prices will likely continue to be supported at good levels.

Meanwhile, trout prices in Italy are stable, although supply is currently limited due to low water availability in the main rivers.

Tilapia prices are rising after bottoming out in June, while the pangasius market has stabilized at low levels.

Nile perch is moving into a different category, away from the low-value tilapia and pangasius market. Consumers appreciate the good taste of the fish, and are willing to pay a higher price. In fact, at the moment, due to limited catches in Lake Victoria, fresh and frozen prices of Nile perch are moving up rather rapidly.

As is normal at this time of the year, carp production and marketing is slow in Hungary, with practically no sales at all.

Greek production of farmed bass and bream is down, and combined volumes of both species exported from Greece in the first quarter of 2016 were 2.3% lower than in the same period last year. Despite the decrease in Greek supply, the seasonal upturn in bass and bream prices in Italy, the major market for farmed bass and bream, has been halted this year below the peak achieved in the summer of 2015 – from June to July bream prices dropped marginally by 2%, while bass prices stayed stable. This reflects an increase in supply volumes to European markets coming from Turkish exporters and, to a lesser extent, increased production in Spain. Prices are still relatively high and this is positive for the Greek industry in particular, but any recovery in investor confidence is likely to be slow and cautious. Although prices are relieving some pressure on aquaculture company margins, there is much more progress to be made on reducing costs at farm level, likely to be achieved through consolidation. In Turkey, ex-farm prices of bream were on a downward trend in the second quarter of 2016, reaching EUR 4/kg, due to unsold stocks of 2014 generation bream combined with the commencement of 2015 generation harvesting. Turkish exporters are still benefitting from a weak Turkish lira versus the euro, however, and export volumes have increased this year.
