• By 1914, the US population was 99 million.

There were TWO Waves of Immigrants:
• “OLD” – Before 1865• From Northern & Western
Europe• Religion: Protestant• Language: English• Similar Culture• Came for farm work
• “New” – After 1865• From Eastern & Southern
Europe• Religion: Catholics, Jews,
Buddhist• Language: few spoke
English• Different Culture• Came for factory jobs• Asian Immigrants• Different customs & beliefs
Immigrants from 1880-1930
• Ireland 1.7 million• Canada 2.3 million• Asia .5 million• Great Britain 2.3 million• Austria/Hungary 4 million• Russia 3.3 million• Italy 4.5 million• Germany 2.8 million
