Stansted Airport CollegeThe College is a partnership between London Stansted Airport (MAG) and Harlow College - the first of its kind at any airport in the country.

Opened in September 2018, the College offers an exciting range of technical and professional courses, in the disciplines of Aviation, Engineering, Hospitality, Retail and Events Management. Our aim is to recruit a pool of talented young people who are keen to progress their careers in the aviation industry.

Student SupportFrom the day you first contact Harlow College to the day you complete your course, we aim to provide you with the very best advice, guidance and support to help you on your learning journey. We want you to have the best possible opportunity to succeed in your studies, to achieve your aims and to have a rewarding and memorable time.

Learning SupportThe College prides itself in giving high quality support to individuals with learning difficulties, disabilities, or other additional needs including emotional, medical, social or behavioural. By providing the right type of support we work hard to enable you to achieve excellence and reach your full potential.

Pastoral CareAll full-time students have a Learner Mentor to guide them through their study programmes. You will have a weekly tutorial session to discuss your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and any issues or problems that you may be working through - your Mentor will be able to signpost you to the most appropriate support.

Financial SupportThe College administers a Bursary Fund to assiststudents with costs related to attending College. They may include: travel costs, uniform, equipment, educational visits and meal costs. Your eligibility will be assessed according to your personal circumstances, your household income and the course that you’re studying. The Bursary desk is open daily in the STAR Agency.

Keeping you SafeThe College has a responsibility to provide you with a safe learning environment in which to study. The College provides a fully trained team of safeguarding personnel who are available at all times to help you with any safeguarding concerns you may have - these may include: bullying, money worries, family issues, homelessness or concerns about becoming radicalised, drawn into extremist behaviour or getting involved in County Lines.

English & MathsHaving strong skills in English and maths remains one of the most important assets for employment and life. All our courses include aspects of English and maths and if you haven’t achieved a grade 4 or C or above from school you will continue to study these subjects through our GCSE and functional skills lessons. We want to make sure that all students have the chance to develop the skills needed to succeed in everyday life, education andin the workplace.

Apprenticeships are a great way to get into the world of work.An Apprenticeship can launch your career at the same time as you are earning and learning. You will gain invaluable experience of working in a professional environment with the benefits of formal training.

Typically, you will spend four days in the workplace and one day at college, depending on the needs of your employer.

An Apprenticeship can be a route to university level qualifications. You usually start at Level 2 or Level 3 and you can then progress to a Higher Apprenticeship at Level 4, or go on to study for part-time degree level qualifications such as HNCs, HNDs and Foundation Degrees.

Harlow College is at the forefront of digital innovation in the UK. In November 2017, The College was recognised as an Apple Distinguished School - the first Further Education College in the UK to achieve this status. Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of innovation, leadership and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching and the education environment and have documented results of academic accomplishment. We were particularly praised for our innovative work using iPads for Learning, Teaching and Assessment in the classroom and beyond.

The iHub is a state-of-the-art one stop shop for learning and innovation; equipped with the latest virtual reality programmes and collaborative learning tools, including Nao the interactive robot.

All enrolled 16-18 year old students at Harlow College will be eligible to loan an Apple device to enable them to learn where and when they want. The College expects all students to have use of an iPad for their learning. We are helping to create digital citizens by forging individuals who will have the skills to go into the ever changing world of work or higher education and whose skills will still be valued in 20 years’ time.

A LevelsA Levels provide an academic route to Higher Education, Apprenticeships or employment. Our students study 3 subjects over a two year period. Similar to GCSE, assessment is mostly through exams. Students can combine A Levels with BTECs.

ApprenticeshipsAn Apprenticeship offers a mix of high quality learning, both on and off the job. In agreement with your employer, you will spend time away from work studying for your Apprenticeship, typically one day per week or block release. You will need to be in suitable employment – there are lots of Apprenticeship opportunities out there. If you would like help in securing your Apprenticeship, our STAR Agency is here to help. Apprenticeships are available from Level 2 to degree level.

Vocational CoursesThese are courses that will help prepare students for university and work and can be studied at Levels 1, 2 & 3. There is a mix of practical and theory work, focusing on the industry skills that employers are looking for. Assessment is through coursework and exams.

Supported StudiesWe offer a range of one year programmes for students with learning difficulties or disabilities aged 16-24. Our aim is to prepare students towards independent living, paid employment and good health as well as community inclusion. All the elements of the course are based on what young people say are important to them!

Higher EducationYou can continue to study many of our courses beyond Level 3 by studying for Higher National Certificates and Diplomas and other professional qualifications. Most subjects can be followed on a part-time basis, combining work and study.

"I studied my Apprenticeship while working for Simmtronic, a unique company specialising in programmable lighting controls. I often worked with an electrician to undertake fault finding on behalf of clients which gives me great experience and a real insight into the industry. I learned a broad range of skills, from installation to commission work in areas such as SMART building interfaces and lighting control modules.

During my time at College I was named ‘Apprentice of the Year’ which was amazing!

My next big challenge is moving to Australia! I will be able to put my electrical qualification to good use as there is a real need for qualified electricians in Australia, especially those who studies in the UK as our regulations are a lot stricter. I just cannot wait to get started!”

“The amount of coursework in the first year really helps you expand your knowledge. You also get to complete over 700 hours work experience over the two years, in a variety of different settings and with different age ranges. My most recent placement provider has actually offered me a job, setting up and running activities with the children - it’s very varied and I’m getting so much experience.

I’m going to be applying to university shortly, to continue my Childcare studies with the ultimate aim of being a nursery manager or teacher. My work placements will definitely help me once I start university as I already have many hours of practical experience and I’m used to responsibilities."

“I really enjoyed the broad range of disciplines you could study on my course – from illustration and ceramics to printmaking, which is how I discovered my love of textiles.

One of my pieces of work was chosen to be exhibited at the Truman Gallery in East London. It was a great experience going to the private view and meeting all sorts of influential people from the industry – there was a real buzz about the place and it made me realise that working in textiles is what I really want to do.

I can’t wait to start university as I will be studying textile design which is what I’m passionate about, particularly batik and free motion sewing. The broad range of skills I have learned on my College course will definitely help me at university.”

Frankie: “As part of our College course we had the opportunity to do a 12 week industry placement with Smiths, with the possibility of an Apprenticeship at the end of it. After only eight weeks we were offered an Apprenticeship, which was amazing!”

Alex: “I really enjoyed my industry placement. It was great to be in a top engineering company and see how everything is produced. Once we’re fully trained, we’ll be able to start making components for the company.”

Frankie: “Our industry placement consisted of spending time in lots of different departments, listening and learning all the time from staff with many years of industry experience.”

Alex: “If you’re thinking about an Apprenticeship then getting an industry placement first is a good idea as potential employers get to see your strengths and you get a feel for what it’s going to be like in the workplace. You have the chance to really show off all your skills to an employer.”

HAIR & BEAUTY“Training in the Salon at Harlow College gives you such great experience as you’re working with paying clients every week. You get the chance to put everything you’ve learned in the classroom into practice and this definitely helps you when you’re ready to go and look for a job. The clients give you feedback so you always know what you’ve got to do to improve.

I also run a beauty therapy and massage business from home. Initially, I started it just for family and friends but it’s grown a lot. I really love it, especially when I’m able to make people feel better about themselves after a treatment.

I’m really interested in the aesthetics of beauty. Doing a nursing degree will give me the qualifications I need to achieve my ambition of working in a clinic in Harley Street, giving treatments like Botox and filler. Ultimately, my goal is to open my own clinic.”

MUSIC“To me, journalism is about the responsibility of informing people reliably; it’s about the excitement of being on the scene when a news story is breaking and you also gain a better understanding of the world.

My course helped prepare me for the NCTJ by teaching me how to write and structure an article as well as introducing me to the principles of copyright and slander. I’ve also learned creative skills such as InDesign and Premier Pro which are very useful as nowadays journalism isn’t just about the writing, it’s about really learning how to use the cameras – editing sound and video - and creating podcasts.

My work experience has been as a reporter at Harlow Town Football Club. Once I complete my NCTJ I would love to be in broadcast journalism, radio shows, TV and news reading. Maybe one day you’ll see me producing the One Show!”

PERFORMING ARTS

“On my course I studied many disciplines including music, dance and acting, which is what I specialised in. I produced my own show, ‘Mongrel’, which premiered at the Harlow Playhouse. It was a really challenging but ultimately rewarding experience - I now feel I have all the tools and experience to put on any production in the future.

One of my stand out moments at Harlow College was playing the role of Caliban in Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’. It really helped me to develop both as an actor and as a person. My teachers encouraged me to push myself and it massively helped with my confidence as well.

At Rose Bruford I will be training as a contemporary performer, studying theatre globally with an emphasis on ancient European theatre, before creating our own production in our final year. My goal is to have a play produced at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and to be successful in America.”

SPORT“My time at College was so exciting. I’m from East London so I didn’t know anyone at first but quickly made lots of great friends. The tutors were also really friendly.

It’s very different from school, you get to learn a lot deeper about the body and the anatomy of sport, health and nutrition and all the science that goes into making a competitive athlete.

I’m really excited about starting my university course – where it can take me and the new people I’ll meet. I’ll learn about the anatomy of the body and how I can put that into practice during competitions.

After I graduate I want to go into teaching or coaching basketball in the community, not just the physical performance but also the health and nutritional aspects.”

ACCESS TO HE (Access to Higher Education)

“I recently decided to retake my English and maths GCSEs which is when I realised that I really wanted to go to university.

I was initially terrified when I first started the Access course as I have two young children and I honestly thought I wouldn’t be able to cope with being back in education and looking after my family. After a couple of weeks, with the support of the tutors, I thought ‘I can do this’!

My class had a real mixed age range, from 18 to 40, and everyone got on really well. I’m off to university in less than three weeks and I can’t wait. My course will hopefully prepare me for a career in teaching primary school children.

My message for anybody thinking about doing an Access course would be ‘just do it.’ You will always regret it if you don’t give it a go.”

What are T Levels?T Levels are new technical courses which will follow GCSEs and will be equivalent to 3 A Levels. They are designed as a technical alternative to A Levels and prepare learners for technical careers. These 2 year courses will offer students a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience during an industry placement of at least 315 hours (approximately 45 days). When will T Levels start?Harlow College will offer T Levels starting in the 2021/22 academic year, initially in the following areas: • Creative and digital• Construction• Childcare and education• Health and science T Levels and Industry PlacementsT Levels include a 45 day industry placement with an employer. Around 80% of time will be spent in the classroom and 20% on placement. This differs to an Apprenticeship, which is typically 80% in the workplace and 20% in the classroom.
