Geography Programme

Concentration Descriptions:

The Geography Concentration of the BSocSc (Hons) in China Studies introduc-es students to the rapidly expanding horizons of the geography discipline and the study of China from a geographical perspective. The curriculum enables students to analyse in-depth the complexities of the geography of contemporary China. Specifically, the programme aims at providing students with: 1. A solid foundation of the theories and methodologies of the geography

discipline; 2. A sound knowledge of contemporary China, particularly in the

understanding of its geographical assets and liabilities; 3. The ability to use geographical tools to conduct independent research;

and 4. Proficiency in Chinese, especially Putonghua, as well as English.

Field Camp

In additional to the Summer Sojourn, Geography Concentration stu-dents are required to attend a mandatory Field Camp (GEOG 3005) organised by the Geography Department, which is conducted at the end of Year 3. This 7-9 day trip takes place outside Hong Kong and offers an invaluable experience for students.

More specific objectives include:

1. To prepare students for careers in China-related business and other endeavours; and

2. To prepare students for graduate studies in geography, China studies and cognate fields.

Study Schedule

In terms of the Putonghua requirement, LANG 1005 Elementary Putonghua (or its equivalence as defined by the University) is the prerequisite for the Summer Sojourn, and we require all China Studies majors to pass LANG 1005 Elementary Putonghua in the 2nd semester of the 3rd Year before the summer sojourn. In addition, students are required to attain at least a B grade in the Putonghua course taken during the Summer Sojourn. Stu-dents who fail to meet this requirements have to pass LANG 1006 Intermediate Putonghua or its equivalence as defined by the University. 4

Study Schedule

In terms of the Putonghua requirement, LANG 1005 Elementary Putonghua (or its equivalence as defined by the University) is the prerequisite for the Summer Sojourn, and we require all China Studies majors to pass LANG 1005 Elementary Putonghua in the 2nd semester of the 3rd Year before the summer sojourn.
