A HAPPY CHILD
2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT

Yet, the stark reality is that tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease resulting in 51 million lost school hours each year. What’s worse is that one out of three Orange County children have untreated tooth decay and face an average wait time of four to six months for treatment under general anesthesia.
Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County was founded in 2003 as a funded program of the Children and Families Commission for a simple-yet-devastating reason: we saw too few children with healthy smiles. Although Orange County is one of the wealthiest counties in the state, our children in our own county continue to lack adequate dental coverage.
More than a decade later and through your support, Healthy Smiles has conducted more than 300,000 patient visits through our Smile Center in Garden Grove, our Smile Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC), and in our Smile Mobiles. We provide education on nutrition and oral health awareness, visual screenings, fluorides and sealants to approximately 200 kids a day in Orange County elementary schools. We are the only nonprofit dental organization that provides dental services, at a minimum cost (most of the time, virtually free) to underserved children in Orange County.
As we round out the 2014-2015 fiscal year, we’re proud to report we’re closing the gap further. We saw precious increases in strategic and operational milestones.
To maintain our responsiveness to the needs of the community, Healthy Smiles engaged in a strategic planning process to identify strategies that are tactically focused on sustainability. The Non-Profit Finance Fund, conducted a deep market assessment coupled with a thorough analysis of revenue and cost options to identify ways to maximize earned income revenue opportunities giving Healthy Smiles six strategic goals for the next few years:
The children of Orange County are counting on us – and thanks to you, we are delivering. Every healthy smile on every child we encounter is an expression of gratitude for all you do to support our mission. We hope you’ll be inspired by the patient stories you’ll find on the following pages. To learn other ways to spread a smile, please read on and discover how you can be a part of our mission over the coming year.

WHO WE ARE WHAT WE DO
ONE CHILD AT A TIME
COMMUNITY FOR MORE THAN A DECADESERVED THEHealthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County has
from our headquarters in Garden Grove and two mobile dental clinics. As one of the largest oral health providers for children of all ages in Orange County, Healthy Smiles is on a mission to improve their oral health through preventative care, outreach and education, treatment and advocacy.
HEALTHY SMILE
The engine driving this mission ignited in 2001 on a field trip for a day of “tooth-friendly” education. The timing coincided with a largely unnoticed-yet-raging epidemic in Orange County: One in three elementary school students suffered from untreated dental disease. This shockingly high rate exceeded the statewide average, despite the county’s position as one of the wealthiest in California.
Although tooth decay is one of the most chronic childhood diseases, it is 100 percent preventable. Through the help of various supporters, Healthy Smiles was brought to life and is now a resource that provides pediatric dental services to underserved families throughout Orange County.
Soon, other agencies serving children and generous donors joined the mission:
2003 The Children & Families Commission of Orange County granted seed funding to launch first program.
2004 The Children & Families Commission, Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) and the Boys & Girls Club of Garden Grove broke ground on the 14,000-square foot building Smile Center for Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County.
2007 Not all families could visit the Garden Grove Smile Center, so with the generous support of the Pacific Life Foundation, Healthy Smiles introduced Smile Mobile 1, a two chair dental facility on wheels.
2013 Smile Mobile 2 is another community asset. Seeking the duplicated success of Smile Mobile 1, the Pacific Life Foundation granted Healthy Smiles additional funding to put a second dental facility on the road.

PATIENT RESULTS
MOLINARI FAMILY Mossimo was diagnosed with autism at an early age and simply brushing his teeth was an everyday struggle, so I knew getting him into a dental office would be challenging. However, finding a qualified provider was harder! We tried various dental providers but none had the patience or specialization to treat Mossimo. The last provider told us his cavities were already severe and because he wouldn’t sit still, he would need sedation. As a mother, thousands of questions and concerns ran through my mind. We were referred to Healthy Smiles and our first visit was life-changing! The first thing I loved was the Tooth Fairy Learning Center. It was a fun and welcoming waiting room that really put Mossimo at ease. They had several activities to do and even a place to practice brushing! I could tell Mossimo was enjoying himself and when it came time for him to see the dentist he was much more cooperative. The dentist took the time to speak directly to Mossimo, letting him know what she would be doing and assured him she wouldn’t do anything to hurt him. That was the first time Mossimo sat still for an entire check-up. As we had already been told, Mossimo had severe decay and he underwent general anesthesia sedation within the next couple of weeks. The care coordinators were absolutely amazing and really put me at ease on the day of his sedation. Finding Healthy Smiles has really been an answered prayer!
ALLEE FAMILYAs our family grew it was difficult to find a dentist. Denti-cal was a huge help, however I struggled tremendously finding one pediatric dentist that could see all my five children. We did the run around for several years: if Joseph and Lucy were finally getting comfortable with a dentist, I would have trouble getting the other three in for an appointment. Another portion of our struggle was that now not only did I have to find a dentist all my children were willing to go to but my two youngest daughters, Lilly and Penelope, needed general anesthesia. As a mother, being told your children need a certain type of sedation because of the severe decay; it’s a scary moment. The worst part is not being able to find a dentist that can provide the needed services. Dr. Correa referred us to Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County. I was terrified at the fact that my three year old (at the time) would simply not wake up. But, the staff at Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County provided caring treatment that reassured me every step of the way. Now not only have my two youngest daughters received the general anesthesia they needed, but all five of them are comfortable seeing the dentist. The older ones remind their younger siblings to floss and brush or else they will get cavities again.
