They has an established
government, while the Americans were starting from scratch.
The Continental
soldiers suffered from hunger and cold, while
the British troops were well trained and had plenty of supplies.
BRITISH
1775 They did not take the Patriots seriously as an enemy.
Commander Lord William Howe, ordered a frontal assault by soldiers in the middle of the day. He want to win without giving the Patriots every advantage. He said “that trained troops are invincible against any numbers or any position of untrained rabble.”
They won the battle but, the Patriots won a psychological victory because they had less casualties and damage than British. They were defeated because they get out of munitions.
They never understood that they were fighting a different type of war, a revolutionary war.
A revolutionary war is a intellectual one.
They just continue a physical war when they bring the Germans mercenaries to help them.
PATRIOTS
They had the Washington’s leadership.
Washington realized that to preserve his Continental Army they could not risk all on major battle under unfavorable conditions.
The women had an important role during war. They feed the soldiers, maintained the camps, wash the clothes, bring water to the battles and in some occasions substituted their husbands from the cannons.

After the battle of Saratoga the French officially made an open alliance with the colonies.
Before Saratoga the French secretly gave arms and ammunitions to the Americans. After Saratoga they volunteers including the General Marquis of La Fayette.
1779 Spain entered the war as France ally.
Both of them want to weaken Great Britain.

Northern’s support the British troops because they promise them that they will keep away the colonists from their lands. (Colonists didn’t obey Proclamation of 1763)

War’s End: The Patriots Won
British made tactical mistakes because they initially underestimated the Patriots.
British misunderstood the political nature of the conflict.
The Patriots were highly motivated and benefited from George Washington’s shrewd leadership.
The Patriots received critical assistance from France.
Treaty of Paris 1783
American Delegation includes Benjamin Franklin.
The Treaty recognized the American independence and granted generous boundaries to the United States. ( At the negotiable table, Franklin secured far more territory than the patriot had won in the war)
The Revolution Impacts Society
Loyalist- British abandon them. The Loyalists can’t return to their home because the mob violence. They became refugees and move to the Britain’s northern territories. In effect, the American Revolution spawned two new nations: the American Republic and the future Dominion of Canada.
American Indians- The Treaty of Paris ignore the natives. 1785 the Patriots forced the Indians to give up massive tracts of land as the price of peace.
Women- Women gained few political or legal rights but, they won respect based on the new conception of women as “republican mothers”. The Revolution inspired some women to seek a larger voice in public affairs.

African Americans- The Revolution inspired many slaves to demand freedom.
In the northern some
slaves petitioned legislatures for
emancipation, because
around 5,000 African American fought during the
war in return of a promise of freedom.
The north approved the
emancipation but, in the south they need the slaves
for their economical system.
Revolutionary Ideas Spread
The greatest effect
was to spread the idea of liberty and “all men
are created equal”.
