BACKGROUND

Worth over $100 Billion dollars globally each year, the heavyequipment market is constantly working to remaincompetitive in harsher environments while becoming moreefficient. There are always areas of the vehicles that requirethe high performance of traditional metal connectors. Inother areas of the vehicle, however, high qualitythermoplastic connectors with superior terminal technologycan be used as a cost and weight savings measure, whilenot compromising on quality. PROBLEM

Standard automotive connection systems do not survive inthe harsh environments of the heavy equipment marketwhere downtime and warranty issues are costly tocustomers and OEM’s. Also, the Society of AutomotiveEngineers (SAE) needed to make a specification for theheavy equipment industry to rationalize the best practicesto be used for communication and diagnostics amongvehicle components, now known as SAE J1939. SAE J1939is used in the heavy equipment industry for communicationthroughout the vehicle, including between the tractor andtrailer. The connection for this specification requires a robust9-way sealed system with size 16 terminals.

AIO SOLUTION

Amphenol’s AT® Circular 3-way, 5-way, and 9-way sealed connectors with caps available provide the ruggedizedthermoplastic solutions needed in the demanding heavyequipment market. It has a positive reverse bayonetretention system and has redundant grommet wire sealing.The size 16 terminals are available in gold or nickel, and theconnection system is rated to 125C. Higher temperatureratings may be available upon request. Panel mountreceptacles are a drop-in replacement for existingconnectors, and the jam nut versions provide quickinstallation. The 9-way receptacles are in accordance to theinterface of J1939.
