REV. RANDY ALLEN, ASSISTANT PASTOR

In my first summer here James Seay stood up in Traditions and introduced a new piece of music to the congregation by saying that we are a teaching hospital. Like all good humor, there was truth behind that statement. My time at FUMC Tuscaloosa has been shorter

than I was planning, but what I realize more each day is how much I have learned in the past two years from you. Part of this has to do with Ken. He has been a great leader and teacher, and for that, I am truly thankful. A great deal of credit has to go to the people who make up this church. You have loved, welcomed and encourage me and my family. I imagine you are not surprised by this acknowledgment, for this is who you are. This congregation loves and nurtures great leaders who go on to do amazing things all across this conference.

God provides an amazing promise in the passage from Jeremiah. I long to have a heart that knows God. At times I feel as if I am growing in the right direction, but at other times I have felt a distance between God and myself. I felt spiritually disconnected. I knew God was present, but I was not. There was an unfulfilled longing in my soul. Have you experienced this? Is your soul thirsty? Do you long for fulfillment? Like Mick Jagger, have you thought “I can’t get no satisfaction, no no no…?"

As summer approaches, my thoughts wander to sun, sand, water and relaxation. One day Jesus relaxed on sand near some water. He sat near a well in Samaria waiting on a woman to arrive. She arrived at noon. She did not know Him, but He knew her. He knew her history and her spiritual needs. He knew her soul was thirsty. Jesus asked her for a drink and He mentioned this amazing stuff that He called living water – spiritual sustenance leading to eternal life. He told her it would remove her soul’s thirst. At a later time in Jerusalem, Jesus described living water to crowds of people and John provided an editorial comment explaining that by “living water,” Jesus meant the Holy Spirit.

We know the Holy Spirit is a gift from God who is with us and in us. We know the Holy Spirit is the Advisor, Counselor and Advocate who comes upon all who accept Jesus as Lord. Jesus said the Holy Spirit will teach us all things and will guide us to truth. Paul tells us that the Holy Spirit transforms our minds, conveys God’s wisdom to us, and makes Christ’s mind available to us. One of Jesus’ purposes is to provide abundant life for us, which is delivered through the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit begins working on people before they believe and He never stops urging us closer to Christ. But other forces distract us like our busy lives, our continuous access to and constant need for entertainment and social media. If we are constantly exclusively plugged into the world our connection with God will be di-minished. God commands us to respect the Sabbath, which means to rest, spend time communing with God, and to spend time with others in the community of faith. We need rest, God and each other.

Is your soul thirsty? Daily consumption of living water is the cure. Sun, sand, water and relaxation are great and if they are your image of summer I hope you find time for them. As we find time to rest this summer, I pray that we each find time to reconnect or to stay connected with the Holy Spirit through prayer, Scripture and through friends in faith.

“I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.” —Jeremiah 24:7

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” —John 4:10

My family and I want to thank you for the love and care that you have shown us while I have served as your Associate Pastor. Not only have you left an imprint on me but you have helped my kids learn that the church is a place full of excite-ment and joy.

Please know that this congregation will always have a special place in my heart. As I continue in my ministry, I will go representing you as a church that helped me develop and grow in the craft of pastoral ministry. Thank you again for being a teaching hospital. welcome | new membersOur M in istry Together

Dr. James Seay, Director of Music & Worship

When I think back to the month of August, 2005 and how a warm and welcoming church took a chance on a green 26 year old kid from Montgomery, AL, it brings an immense smile on my face. The

past ten years have been remarkable. Together, we have grown a ministry with adults and chil-dren singing the praises of the Most High. We have built a new Pipe Organ – something that is accomplished once in several generations. We remodeled a Chancel loft to accommodate a new season of growth, not to mention a new grand piano. Together, we have explored the truths of God found in uncommon places – like Broadway! We have sung together. We have prayed together. We have experienced God’s Word together. And together, we have wor-shiped the Lord God, Three in One.

In mid-June, Mabs and I will be moving back to Montgomery, AL, our hometown, where I will be taking on a new challenge as Director of Music at First United Methodist Church Montgomery. I assure you that I will be taking all of you with me. FUMCT is where I learned to be a leader, where I learned how to grow ministry, where I learned so much about myself and my faith. I will be taking that with me wherever I go. And for that, I am forever grateful to the people of this church and to the staff and to Dr. Ken Duni-vant who took a chance on young kid.

My last Sunday here at FUMCT will be June 14. I am so looking forward to spending my remain-ing time here the same way we have spent the past ten years together – in true, heartfelt worship of the God that brings us together and makes us who we are. I know God is preparing the next leader to come into this church and take our Music and Worship Ministry farther than I ever could. This is an incredible church filled with excellent people and staff, and I am very excited to see the future that God has in store for First United Methodist Church of Tusca-loosa, AL!

Ecclesiastes reminds us that for everything there is a season. That is certainly true for our church staff. For a variety of rea-sons, we are experiencing changes on our staff:

A Season of Change

giving TO THE

churchFrom the rising of the sun to its setting, God’s name will be honored. Men and women in every place will worship Him with a pure offering of their devotion. —Malachi 1:11-12

There is a great beauty in a sunrise or a sunset over the spar-kling white sands of the Gulf Coast. We know that God is with us in every corner of the world but it is easy to see his mighty power and beauty when we are vacationing with our favorite people in a place like the beach. The life changing ministry of the church doesn’t take a vacation. As a matter of fact, the summer is one of the busiest times for our church:• Vacation Bible School: 375 children and volunteers.• Big Stuf Youth retreat: 121 students and adult volunteers.• Discovery: 150 middle school students, 70 high school

leaders, 50 adult volunteers.• Girls’ Softball: 63 girls and nine coaches. • Honduras medical mission trip: 12 nurses, doctors, den-

tists and volunteers treating 2,060 patients in one week.• Maine mission trip: 10 volunteers, serving over 100 camp-

ers by building wheelchair ramps for the cabins.• United Methodist Women: Seven Circles hosting a fund-

raiser for local missions. As the prophet Malachi called us to faithfulness, will you commit to worship God with your pure offering? As the temperature rises, giving to the church declines. You can help avoid this summer slump by sending your offering by mail when you are out of town. You can also set up electronic funds transfers from your bank to the church. Honor God in every place, at every time, with your pure offering of devotion.

Transforming LIvesMaking disciples

Great Theologian, Charles Spurgeon, once said, “There is no greater mercy that I know of on earth than good health except it be sickness; and that has often been a greater mercy to me than health...It is a good thing to be without trouble; but it is a better thing to

have trouble, and know how to get grace enough to bear it.”

It may seem odd to you to start an article with this quote, but for me being a part of a small group is one of the ways of finding grace to bear the hard things that happen in life. I recently participated in a small group Simply: Ten Practices To Unclutter Your Soul by Bill Hybels facilitated by Rev. Josh Hickman, and it was in this group that I found a “second family.” This group was more than a connection, and was a place to internalize my experiences and gain tools, confidence, and abilities for handling life. This group aided me in making some emotional connections needed to deal with changes that were evident in my day to day work, family, and spiritual existence. The vulnerability that was encour-aged in the group led to real connection, consistent accountability, utter forgiveness, unconditional support and a strengthening of my Christian faith. I felt a love and acceptance from group members that heightened my enthusiasm with each meeting. There is something strangely sweet about the way people from all walks of life, different ages, and unique seasons of life can bond over interesting, evocative content.

After spending time in Africa, you are never the same. It is impossible to articulate the ways in which you feel ashamed for your American lifestyle. I have consistently looked for ways to simplify my life after my return; to

release consumerism, embrace contentment and live minimally. Hybel’s book provided a springboard for de-cluttering the messy parts of my life and growing a closer relationship with God. In Ephesians 5:15-16, Paul teaches, "Be very careful, then, how you live - not as unwise, but wise, making the most of every opportu-nity." The essence of simplification - making the most of every opportunity given by God. Too often in my world of work and family, I find myself too busy to even notice the divine appointments that God has planted along my path. Coveting the promise that this scripture has to offer along with other dynamic thoughts unearthed by Simplify and the reassurance of my group, I began to focus on simplifying my life in Christ.

We owe the idea of small groups to our founding fa-ther, John Wesley, who understood the need for living holy lives. His innovation of small groups was where one could experience intimate fellowship on a regular basis revolutionized 18th century England and pro-vided support, accountability, encouragement, and a way for believers to live in community. He believed that there is “no personal holiness without social holiness.” Wesley knew all too well the need that Christian followers have for discipleship. We need communion with other believers that have similar God values. We need a place to heal and mature. We need an environment that creates a hunger within us for more information, growth and good experiences. We need to find ways to strengthen our Christian experience by giving back. We grow roots and spread our wings in a small group setting. There is a broken world waiting to experience God’s love and we are called to share His love, feed His sheep, and answer His divine appointments. Are you prepared to answer God’s divine appointments? Do you want to experi-ence spiritual connection in a new way? Do you need ways to find grace to bear the hard things that hap-pen in your life? Become a part of a small group can be life-changing!

QUARTER SUNDAY │Quarter Sunday will be Sunday, May 31. On that date, please remember to bring quarters (we take dollar bills, too) for our hospital parking expense ministry. Members of our church family who are in the hospital are given a hospital “goodie bag” which includes snacks, puzzle books, coloring books for chil-dren, tissues, small notepads, pens, and other items that might be helpful to the patient and family members. The goodie bags also contain quarters for parking fees. Since parking fees at DCH have increased, more quarters are needed!

STEPHEN LEADER TRAINING │ On June 7-13, Rev. Dan Kilgore, Dr. Teri Boman, Mr. Mike Spalding, and Susan Kizziah will be attending the Stephen Series Leader’s Training Course in Orlando, Florida. Please pray for their safe travel to and from the conference and for a Spirit-filled learning experi-

ence while they are there. At the training, our Stephen Leader’s will learn how to train people here at the First United Methodist Church Tuscaloosa to be Stephen Ministers. Perhaps God is call-ing you to be one of these caring, committed servants who will of-fer God’s love to those who are hurting. Watch for further informa-tion about how you can become a Stephen Minister.

HATS OFF TO OUR VALET PARKING TEAMS! │Every Sunday, sev-eral faithful men volunteer to assist individuals by parking their cars. Rain, sleet, snow, or extreme heat does not deter these guys from helping out our members who have “parking problems”. In-dividuals who’ve had surgery and for whom “getting around” isn’t easy, older church members who can’t walk across the streets near the church, and mothers with young children all appreci-ate FUMCT’s Parking Ministry. According to members of our Valet Parking Teams, comments are made every week by people using the service such as “I wouldn’t be able to come to church at all if you all didn’t help park my car.” Thanks to each member of the Valet Parking Teams for your will-ingness to serve others! A special “thank you” to Paul Roberts, Chairperson of the Valet Parking Team, who keeps a master list of all valet parkers and creates the valet parking schedules!

Hello, my name is Emma Jackson and I am currently a student at Shelton State Community College. Next year I plan to

transfer to the University of Alabama to complete a major in history and a minor in art. I plan on being an archi-tectural historian (or a high school his-tory teacher) when I graduate. How-ever, right after I graduate, I want to live in China for a year or two working with ELIC (English Language Institute/China) to teaching English. I have lived in Tuscaloosa all my life and played soccer for Northridge High School.

Many thanks to all the students and adults who have made Foo-Mack (Tuscaloosa FUMC student ministry) what it is today. My family and I have been extremely blessed to have been part of such a great church family. I know God will con-

tinue to grow our students and ministry for years to come.

We welcome this summer’s interns this month, Emma Jack-son and Tayler Hansford. Both are Tuscaloosa natives and I hope you will make them feel welcome. Emma will focus on our girl’s ministry while Tayler focuses on our guy’s. Emma and Tayler’s first Sunday will be May 17.

This clean-up work lasted for several months, as 75% of the homes on Juanita Drive were completely destroyed, and the other 25% were severely damaged. Over the course of these months, our volunteers began to develop relationships with the people and families living in this neighborhood.

After the clean-up portion of our work was finished, the United Methodist “Hope Builders” Ministry (our local UMCOR “non-profit” construction ministry), repaired three homes and completely rebuilt another home in this area. So, Juanita Drive is certainly a community near & dear to our hearts here at FUMCT.

I am proud to announce that we, along with other local United Methodist churches, will return to Juanita Drive to build new homes with Habitat for Humanity! The planning process for this project is currently underway. We need or-ganizers, fundraisers, physical laborers, lunch teams, etc. The list of ways in which you can assist with this mission is nearly endless, and we need many of you to help with this endeavor.I hope you will plan to be a part of this con-tinual improvement of the Juanita Drive neighborhood. For more information or to sign up for our volunteer list, please contact Joshua Davis at 205.345.7261, ext. 52.

MECHUWUNA METHODIST CAMP IN WINTHROP, MAINE │ July 4-12, 2015 │ First Church is forming a mission team to work on building wheelchair ramps for each of the cabins at the Mechuwuna Methodist Camp in Maine. There will also be a clothing and nursing home ministry during this mission trip. The final details of this team are in the process of being developed. For more information, contact mission team leader Dorothy Raymond at 205.394.4787 or [email protected], or Joshua Davis at 205.345.7261, ext. 52.

My name is Tayler Hansford, and I am a student at the University of West Alabama where I am studying Business Administration. Upon graduating from UWA, I hope to go on to law school. I

was homeschooled all through high school and played multiple sports including, baseball, bas-ketball, and football. During high school, I was also active in the Zeta Mu chapter of the National Honor Society where I served as Chaplain and Vice President. JUNE 10, 17 & JULY 1, 8, 15, 22-7PMWant to grow deeper in your understanding of who Jesus is?Join us for Bible Study at The Stegall’s house! (2813 Yorktown Drive - Riverchase)

He demands that we stretch out our hands and arms to feed the hungry; to give drink to the thirsty; to welcome strangers; to clothe the naked; to visit prisoners; to care for the sick. How can you impact the hungry, those in prison, the sick and downtrodden?

Match these ministries of FUMCT with the demands that Jesus made by draw-ing a line from Jesus’ command in the column on the left, to the corresponding FUMCT outreach ministry in the column on the right.

EL VERGEL AGRICULTURE SCHOOL ANGOL, CHILE │ October 30 – November 7, 2015 │ A mission team is being formed to work with our long-time missionary partner John Elmore. The group will work at the agriculture school for the local Mapuche Indian (Chilean Natives) population providing construction work, a relational ministry, and a ministry to children. The cost is estimated to be between $1,500- $1,800 (depending on flight costs). This is a wonderful connectional ministry of the United Methodist Church that we pray you will consider joining. For more information, please contact Darrell Johnson at [email protected].
