Ruins on the Matara Galgodiyana Island – මාතරගල්ගගොඩියාන දූපත ග ෞද්ධ නටබුන්

Galgodiyana is an island off Matara lying lessthan 200 meters off from Amaloh BeachBoutique Resort, and about 500 meters off thepopular Polhengoda beach.

History of the ruins of this island goes back toabout 120 years and an interesting story liesabout the building of the Buddhist place ofworship. The mains artifacts on this jungleisland is a ruined stupa made to Thaiarchitecture and a mysterious stone arch.

According to history, a prince named Prisdang of Siam (now Thailand) who had been educated in England and hadserved as a ambassador for number of European countries had fallen out with the monarch of Siam and hadescaped during a visit to Japan in 1890 and had reached Sri Lanka in 1896.

He had traveled towards Matara and noticing thisserine island away from people, had decided to makethis his adobe living and learning the way ofBuddhism. It is said that a rock called Ethagala(Elephant Rock) has had a elephant figure and the date1894.06.26 carved.

The Stupa and its buildings are said to be designed byJinawansa Thero based on Siamese (Thai) tradition. The stupa has been built with entrances from fourdirections. There are two stone inscriptions but todilapidated to read. In addition, there is a mysticentrance built with stone bolder held together for noapparent reason.

How do we get there – Kayak ride with Amalohrecreation team.
