The alligators in our community have been more active than normal. There are several possible reasons for this occurrence. First, it is currently their breading season and they are looking for mates. Secondly, the temperatures have been warmer than usual making them more active because they are cold blooded animals. Third, there has been a considerable amount of habitat destruction in our area due to the development of the shopping center by our main entrance and now the construction of the bridge over our eastern ditch at the east end of Port Harbor Parkway.
They also travel long distances to find food and our lakes contain some fairly good sized fish that are abundant and easily accessible for them to consume. Their diet is varied and they will eat what is easily accessible such as frogs, snakes, small mammals, and birds. After a meal they can be seen sun bathing. This serves two purposes, to increase or regulate their body temperature which increases metabolism and aids in digestion. Do not feed or disturb them.
Under Florida law, it is a third degree felony to feed alligators. There are many myths about alligators. One is that alligators will chase and hunt people. Not true, if they are near water they likely will swim away. Remember the old saying,”alligators can’t catch you if you run zig-zag”? Not true, and they are pretty quick in catching you. “Alligators are good pets.” Unlike cats and dogs which generally show affection to the hand that feeds it. The opposite could become true for a maturing gator. Alligators have poor eye sight. Wrong, they actually have very good eye sight. With eyes on the side of their heads they have a much wider range of vision. Within their eyes there is a layer of cells located beneath the photoreceptors cells which reflect light back into these cells increasing the amount of light detected improving their vision in low light conditions. Myth #4: Alligators aren’t good climbers. We forget that they are green scaly muscle machines! With their sharp claws and powerful tails, they are able to push their bodies up onto fences. I have seen that happen.
Yet another myth is that they have no enemy. With the destruction of natural habitat, many alligators become dislocated, they enter others’ territory and may be hunted by other gators or get caught in man-made constructions. That happened to a person in our neighborhood when an alligator got stuck in his front doorway entrance and could not get turned around. They are able to regulate their body temperature by relying on external sources. They increase body temperature by basking in the sun and they lower it by moving in the cooler water. They prefer a temperature range between 82-92 degrees F. and become dormant at temperatures below 55 degrees F. Respect them as being part of our environment, not apart from it.
