Eco findings in our project partner countries:

• Armenia, • Ukraine,

• Denmark, • Poland, • France,

• Azarbaijan

1. Armenia

• The key threatening processes include: (1) habitat loss and modification; (2) over-use of biological resources; (3) pollution; (4) effects of introduced and non-native species; and (5) climate change.

• A number of species of foreign origin have been introduced to the natural ecosystems of Armenia. The effects of introduced species through competition with native species, is not clear and their broader effects on biodiversity are unknown.

The temperature rise in Armenia

• The impact of climate change on biodiversity remains unclear but a temperature rise of 2-3°C is predicted, which would result in increased desertification, and possibly to species extinction.

Armenia 2• Of around 17,500 species of

invertebrate and vertebrates recorded in Armenia, approximately 300 are considered to be rare or declining.

• A total of 99 vertebrates are currently listed in the Armenian Red Data Book, of which 39 are also listed in the Red Data Book of the Former Soviet Union.

2. France: endangered species

• Of the many species of animals to become endangered in France some of the most well known include the Corsican deer, Pyrenean Ibex as well as a dozen different species of bat.  River Otters have become endangered primarily due to trapping as their fur is a prized possession.

• The once famous brown bear which was commonly seen in the mountains of France in previous centuries has all but disappeared since the 1930’s although it is believed that there are still some left.

France 2 – sea wildlife

• While accurate figures are difficult to obtain, it is estimated that as many as a quarter of the fish species indigenous to the waters off France have become endangered over the past few decades.

• Reasons for dwindling numbers of fish include over fishing as well as factors related to the changing climate in France.

3. Ukraine•  Like many former Soviet republics,

Ukraine suffers from air and water pollution from industrial plants that had few environmental controls.

• This has contributed to a decline in the health of the Black Sea.

• Today, the 20 or so remaining species of kovyl have been entered into the Chervona Knyha (‘Red Book’), or the book of endangered species of Ukraine.

Ukraine 2• Another feature of the steppe was the

eagle. • The numbers of this majestic bird of

prey have drastically reduced, and the eagle has also been entered into the ‘Red Book of Ukraine.’

• A species of eagle known as the orel kurhannyk, or eagle of the burial mounds, has been especially hard hit and also entered into the ‘Red Book of Ukraine.’

4. Poland –endangered species

• Mud turtle – it lives in overgrown lakes and ponds;

• – Short-eared owl – a rare bird of large marshes and wilderness;

• – Pygmy owl – the smallest of European owl species, living in primeval forests;

• – Eagle owl – the biggest of European owl species, living in primeval forests and rocky regions;

• – Western curlew – a rare species, living on wet meadows;

Endangered in Poland 2

• – Roller – the edges of old forests are its favourite habitat;

• – Wolf – the only area it can be spotted is eastern Poland;

• – Lynx – it can be encountered in large and dense forest expanses;

• – Snake-head fritillary – a rare plant of wet meadows;• – Bog rosemary – it is found on wood peatland;• – Water chestnut – ponds and old riverbeds of

southern Poland are its natural habitat;• – Aldrovanda vesiculosa – this carnivorous plant grows

in lakes and feeds on little insects.

5. Azerbaijan• Impressive mammals, such as the

brown bear, the wolf, the Caucasian goat (also called the Tur), graze on the mountains of the Greater Caucasus range. One of the last remaining populations of goitered gazelle in the South Caucasus lives on the lowland steppes of Azerbaijan.

6. Denmark

• Some of threatened species are:

Page 20: A joint activity endangered species across europe

Environment - current issues:

• - air pollution, principally from vehicle and power plant emissions;

• - nitrogen and phosphorus pollution of the North Sea;

• - drinking and surface water becoming polluted from animal wastes and pesticides

A few endangered plants-Denmark

• On postage stamps, too! Wise!

04/12/23Denmark pays a lot of attention

to biodiversity protection!!! 21

Page 22: A joint activity endangered species across europe

What to say in the end?!• When sifting through resources, both of us

found out the IDENTICAL REASONS for the fabulous and most precious species, both flora and fauna to face proper extinction unless people totally CHANGE the present life habits and abolish further demolition of the living life, HUMAN BEING included?!

• WHICH WAY TO USE? THE RIGHT ONE!

• Yours, Melita and Niculina
