Handfuls of Grace

What is Your Temperature?

A couple of weeks ago, after a few sunny days, the thermometer in the kitchen said the outside temperature was -2 degrees. There was frost on the grass, but I was surprised that the temperature was so low. After becoming fully awake, I realized that the switch had been flipped to centigrade instead of fahrenheit! 28 degrees F was no warmer than -2 C, but it was closer to my expectations.

Our expectations for different substances vary. Usually soup should be hot. Showers should be warm. Our bodies are normally around 98.6 F and an elevation of more than a couple of degrees indicates that the body’s defensive mechanisms are being mobilized to respond to an attack.

In the Church, the Body of Christ, hot is good, and cold is treatable, but lukewarm is nauseating in God’s eyes. In Revelation 3, the Lord Jesus tells the church at Laodicea some hard truths. He wished they were either hot or cold. They thought they were just fine. They are prosperous, they are even rich, aren’t they? There is nothing that they need, so they think.

Jesus confronts their self-congratulatory complacency. He says they “are actually wretched, pitiable, poor, blind and naked.” (Rev. 3:17 NRSV) And the worst part is that they have no idea of their true condition.

Sometimes we think we are on fire for the Lord because, like Martha, we are very busy in the kitchen. We may be so busy we have forgotten why we are doing all these things.

Jesus wants you more than what you can do for Him or for the Church. He wants to share His heart with you and to guide you in the paths of righteousness just because… He loves you.

A heartfelt THANK YOU for all the prayers, visitors, cards, gift cards and meals during Rusty's hospital stay and recovery! The power of prayer is amazing! We are so blessed to be a part of such a wonderful church family. Again, thank you!

Love,

Rusty, Laura, Russ, Ashley, Logan, Tyler, Katelyn and Ryan Kight

Thank you to all who prayed, visited, brought delicious meals, sent cards or thought of me during the past two months as I recovered from knee surgeries. It meant a lot to have such a caring church community lending support. We are blessed. God is with us.

Stephen Ministry Thoughts

from Kathy Moore

Kathy Moore, a Stephen Minister at Brook Hill Church, had this to say about Stephen Ministry: God is in the center of the (Stephen Minister) relationship. His presence is felt and the Holy Spirit leads our meetings. There is great joy in this fellowship even though there are sad events in our lives. Together in Christ we can still experience joy.

Stephen Ministry is a one to one caring ministry for people going through difficult times in their lives. For more information, check out the Stephen Ministry website at https://www.stephenministries.org

He is Risen!

By Pastor Wade

The powerful message of Easter does not change from year to year, yet we look forward to this celebration to be reminded of the hope Easter offers. So again this year, as Easter will soon be upon us, we remember that:

God brings hope where there is despair, a hope that saves and satisfies.

God brings joy where there is darkness and grief,

God brings love where there is hate and indifference,

God brings truth and trust where there is fear,

and God brings new life where there is death.

For centuries now the story of Easter has inspired the hearts, minds, and souls of Christians all around the world. And the real power of the Easter story comes alive as our eyes are opened to God’s Word, and the glory of God’s resurrected Son, as He is fully revealed to us!

That first Easter God delivered Jesus from the tomb and broke lose the shackles of death, and honestly the world hasn’t been the same since. And now for centuries God has met people in the everyday routine of life.

The whole point is, God cannot be held captive in the tomb of our limited expectations and understanding. He breaks out in an exciting and dynamic way, always on the move to reach the hearts and minds of all people around the world. As a result, our lives have been illumined by the triune God who lived, died and now lives again. It is because of Jesus’ resurrection, death is not the end, it’s the gateway to new life.

Friends, God’s story is not over, because we are now part of the continuing narrative. So as Resurrection people, Jesus sends us into the world to heal, bless, and serve, all to glorify God. May we all pick up the baton of Easter and pass it on to all for whom we meet. Christ is risen! Hallelujah!

Brook Hill Weekday Preschool Scholarship Program

Each year we try to serve several families in need with scholarship assistance so that their child can benefit from the experience of attending Preschool before Kindergarten. We sincerely hope that this assistance makes a difference in a child’s life and helps build a love of learning! If you would like to help support our scholarship program, donations of any amount can be given to the Preschool. We can provide a receipt for all donations for your taxes. Please consider giving the gift of education to a child in need. Donation checks can be made to “Brook Hill Weekday Preschool” with “Scholarship” written in the memo. They can be mailed to the Preschool or given to the Preschool Director. If you have any questions please contact the Preschool office. Boy Scout Troop 271

March has been a busy month for Troop 271. The scouts participated in their quarterly Court of Honor where two scouts advanced a rank—Second Class (Ryan Ullman), Star (Robert Fletcher). A campsite clean-up and

overnight campout occurred at our home site at the Walkersville Watershed in preparation for the upcoming Spring Camporee in April.

Brook Hill recently finished hosting the District Religious Emblems Courses. Twenty-three Scouts from various units within the Francis Scott Key District completed the course respective to their grade, and were recognized at Brook Hill during the 11:00 service on March 24, 2019.

Thank you to the following instructors who made this opportunity for the Scouts possible- Shelly Evans, Jo Ann Howell, and Cindy Champion. For more information regarding Brook Hill scouting activities, contact LeMoyne Fletcher at [email protected]
