Why is empathy important in our work?

u Leaders who are empathic are able to better understand and support their team and co-workers.

u Employees who are supported perform at higher standards.

u Teams who perform at higher standards move the organization forward are critical to the organization’s success.

u Leaders who practice empathy build trust across their team. Without trust, team members are cautious, limiting full commitment.

Types of Listening

u Indifferent/inactive listening – mind is wondering; no communication.

u Selective listening – hear what you want to hear; actively working on response.

u Active listening

u Gives speaker undivided attention

u Listen closely to content

u Block out distractions

u Demonstrates interest, understanding, and empathy

u Reflective listening – active listening with clarifying questions to ensure you have mutual understanding.

How to practice active listening?

u Demonstrate respect, even if you do not share the same opinion.u Do not interrupt or be judgmental.u Pay attention to non-verbal communication.u Listen more than you speak.u Ask thoughtful questions. (What can I do to help?)u Eliminate your own agenda.u Demonstrate appreciation for speaker sharing concerns.u Summarize/acknowledge the content.u Walk in a team member’s shoes.u Act on items raised.u Prioritize problems. Not everything is first-come, first-served.

How can we lead with empathy?

u Treat team and co-workers with respect.

u Spend time developing relationships.

u Work to understand your team members and co-workers. Demonstrate you are genuinely interested in them.

u Listen to your team and co-workers - more than you talk.

u Be fully present – no electronic devices!

u Recognize and praise the work of team members – in large and small ways.

u Spend a few minutes each day thinking about your team and co-workers.
