The Cttouings Option comprise* six claitts, P-37634, 37655,

37620, 37621 37975 and 37976 situated in Ut 12, C once i s ion s H and

lil, Jamieson Township, Ontario.

The property is crossed by the Little Kamiskotia River t BO

outcrop occurs on the north side of the river; approximately 20 acres

of outcrop occur on the south side of the river*

Rocks outcropping include andesite, rhyolite, quartz, feld

spar porphyry and diabase. The andesite possesses some flow character

istics. Both andesite and rhyolite are sheared, the strike of schistos

ity being 1100 - 1150 . The porphyry is intrusive into the volcanics.

Both porphyry and volcanics are jointed, the principal joint direction

being 200 - 450 . Slight contact ruetaraorphisw of andesite was effected

by the porphyry'

Mineralization is of the quartz vein type, controlled by

direction of shear or by the joint pattern. Sulphides, pyrite and

chalcopyrite occur in a l* -1*6" wide quartz vein with strike len*h of

approximately 500', and in the Curings showing, a 9" - V wide, 7* long

lense of massive chalcopyrite and quartz. Sotue bleaching has occurred

at the contact of soiae of the quartz veins.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The outcrop area can be eliminated as a base aetal prospect*

Chalcopyrite is restricted to two relatively narrow quartz veins, and

it is felt that such an occurrence is of no significance from the point

of view of base metals. It is proposed to submit a series of vein

samples for assay for gold.

INTRODUCTION

The Cummings Option comprises six claims, F-37634 37655,

37620, 37621, 37975 and 37976 located in Lot 12, Concessions li and HI,

Jamieson Township, Ontario.

The property is accessible by canoe down the Little Kamiskotia

River, from Kamiskotia Lake to Cummings banding, the sosth part of the

property is accessible by an old drill road commencing from the Kamia-

kotia-TiaMns Road, approximately half a mile south of the bridge over

the Little Kamiskotia River. The north part of the property is access

ible from the Kam Kotia Mine down the Robb-Jemieson Township Lino*

Outcrop on the propoty is indicated on the ODM Robb-Jamlesen

Map, Sheet 83c. The outcrops are referred to as greenstone. No mention

of the property was made in the report accompanying the map COOM Vol.

LIII, Pt. iv., 1944).

Previous work done on the claims includes stripping, trenching,

in the outcrop area; four diamond drill holes wore put down on the

adjacent claim 6076 by Walcora Mines.

The present investigation was carried out at the end of Hay

and beginning of June 1965. Personnel involved wore Ri Hutchinson, R,

Bucke and A. K. Temple. All outcrops on the property were located md

mapped on Scale l" - 200*, using control of picket linos spaced at 200*

intervals. Additional stripping was done wherever necessary.

The claim group is divided by the Little Kamiskotia River* Bordering the river is a belt of older swamp, succeeded on the north bank by cedar-spruce swamp, and spruce with alder* The higher ground on the south side of the river is covered by a growth of poplar* with birch , spruce and balsam*

The large outcrop area southeast of Coamings Landing rises abruptly on the south side to an elevation of approximately 80' above general level. The outcrop area is covered by uoss and spruce* Ap

proximately 9X of the property is covered by outcrop.

The overburden is shallow over the outcrop area and poplar ridges. Deeper overburden covers the swampy areas. A maximum of 79*

overburden (at 450 ) was encountered in the diamond drilling in Claim 0078.

Andesite

Description of Formations

Andesite The rocks grouped under "andesite" include fine to fairly coarse grained dark green rocks, some of which exhibit evidence of an extrusive origin.

Definite extrusive types include the pillow lava and amygdal oidal lava. Excellent pillow structure is developed in the outcrop on the Township Line in Claim P -37975, and on the northeast boundary of the

tame claim i on both outcrops the pillows face northeast.

Page 5: A* K. Temple lone 21, 1955€¦ · DETAILED GEOLOGY - CUMslINGS OPTION BASE MAP 42A/12S PORCUPINE-KIRKLAND ONTARIO A* K. Temple lone 21, 1955. The Cttouings Option comprise* six claitts,

Page 4

AThe original character of the bulk of the andesite on the Mft

side of the outcrop area is obscured by later shearing. Elongated,

sheared "diamond" shaped structures may be representative of sheared

pillows, whilst local brecciated zones nay represent sheared flow breccias.

A noteworthy feature of areas of andesite is the presence of

Irregular, white weathering, rhyolitic stringers, elongated along the

schistosity. These stringers iaay represent acidic "flow top" material.

More coarse grained, massive, andesitic types bear no evidence

of extrusive origin, and may be intrusive (sill-like) representatives of

the andesitic vulcanicity.

Rhyolite Hard, massive, white weathering rhyolite outcrops in tbe east

of Claiu P-3U349.' The rock is in contact with andesite. The contact

appears quite sharp, and strikes at 3500 . The rhyolite exhibits linea

tion striking at 950 .

Other rhyolite outcrops in the west of Claim P-3t;349. The

rhyolite is sheared and weathers a brown colour. The acid character of

the rock is evidenced by its hardness, grey colour and the presence of

rounded quartz phenocrysts.

Quarts-feldspar-porphyry

A massive, dark, uodiuw grained rock with visible feldspar and

rounded quartz phenocrysts outcrops on the east side of Claim P-37976.

The rock has definite cross cutting relationships to the Keewatin

volcanics.

Diabase Massive coarse grained diabase outcrops in the east of Claims

37621 and 37976. No definite contact was napped, but the limit of tbe

dyke is defined fairly closely by adjacent andesite outcrops*

"Gabbro" was logged in Holes l and 3 drilled by vfalcora. On

the present map, this "gabbro" has been referred to as diabase, being on

tbe strike of the outcropping diabase.

eStructure

Definite strike of the volcanic rocks is largely obscured by

shearing. However, the strike of the rhyolite bands (particularly the

easternmost) can be accepted as reliable, and presumably the strike of

pillowed andesite is also reliable. The discrepancy in these two strikes

would suggest the possibility that the rhyolite is intrusive.

The northerly dip and younging of andesite indicated by pillows

would suggest that the area uay be situated on the north limb of a tuajor

anticllu&l structure.

The andesite arid rhyolite both exhibit shearing striking

approximately 1130 and dipping steeply to the north. The direction of

sheering transect?, the strike of the rhyolite and was, therefore, of a

later date than the rhyolite. The "Algoman" intrusive does not exhibit

any lineation comparable to the shearing of the volcanics. The shearing

is dated as Mpre Algoman".

The highest incidence of shearing occurs on the south side of

the large outcrop. This would suggest the possibility of a fault trend

ing parallel to the schistosity along the south part of the outcrop area*

Such a fault would account for the apparent southeast swing of the

rhyolite horizons.

All the rocks exhibit Jointing. The principal Joint direction

of the andesite, rhyolite and "Algoma" intrusive is 200 - 450 east of

north, with a subsidiary Joint at BOO - 900 . The Joints way be filled

with quartz. This set of Joints does not occur in the diabase, and is

therefore dated as pre Matachewan. The diabase dyke Joints roughly

parallel, and are nornal to the dyke walls.

The emplacement of the "Algoman" intrusive retailed in

contact metamorphism. The adjoining andesites are characterised by the

development of carbonate rhonbs, presumably resulting Iron breakdwon 01

the ferromagnesian Minerals, with possible introduction of COg, and

migration te loci of deposition evenly spaced through the rock. Such

a phenomena if coupon in contact metmaorphic aureoles.

The andesite* appear to have suffered the regional "greenschist

facies" metamorphism cotwaon to large tracts of Keewatin rooks.

Economic Geology ft Mineralization

Two principal showings occur on the claim groups, vis*. the

C utm i oy s showing and the vein on the north side of the large outcrop in

Claim 37976.

The Ctnwings showing occurs near Line 228 at 62S. The showing

is in sheared andesite and consists of a lense of brecciated andesite

cemented by quartz with chalcopyrite. The lense is approximately l 1 wide

and has a visible length of 6*; it pinches to the west end, and tilt east

continuation has been trenched, but is apparently of only limited length.

The chalcopyrite content of the lease is approximately 28K* Secondary

malachite and covellite have developed. The showing strikes 112O , along

the shearing. Four DDH's put down on strike of the showing by Wolcora

failed to locate any continuation of the miueralieatioa.

A sulphide bearing quartz vein outcrops in the vicinity of

65 ~ 36S on Lines 14 and 16E. The vein has a strike length of approxi

mately 800*. It trends parallel to the schistosity in its western por

tion and along the minor joint direction in its eastern portion* The

outcrops of the vein have been enlarged by trenching and blasting of

two snail pits. Where exposed, the veil, varies frost l 1 ~ 1'6H in width.

It is'ozaposed of massive white, quartz with pyrite and chalcopyrite}

pyrite approximately 2ft, chalcopyrite approximately 4ft. pyrite pre

cedes chalcopyrite in the paragenesis. The correlation ol the vein

over its length is made on a constant mineral assemblage.Numerous narrow barron quartz veins occur on the property*

These are controlled by either the direction ol shearing or by the

principal joint direction. Three massive irregular quartz gash veins,

attaining an individual width of l*, cat the "Algoaan" intrusive'

The intrusive is bleached, i.e., with development of sericite and car

bonate, in proximity to the quartz veins. Similar bleached rock was

trenched near L20E at 648.

The age of the mineralization described above if clearly

post "Algoman" intrusive and pre Matachewan diabase. The mineraliza

tion is most probably an end phase of the Algoman intrusion.

This group of s i\ claims lies on the western boundary of

Jamieson Township directly east of Kamiskotia Lake. Access is made

front Kamiskotia Lake via the Little Kamiskotia River.

The group was staked by Chas. Cummings in the period

September 1953 to July 1954. The Cummings pyrite, chalcopyrite fhow-

ing lies in an area of extensive outcrop in the mott southeasterly

claim, P-37976. There is no outcrop elsewhere on the property. The

six claims adjoin the Dominion Gulf Company's Jamieson I property to

the north, east and southeast. They were optioned by the Company in

April 1955 to extend the limit* of that property westward to the

Township Line.

Line-cutting and a ground magnetometer survey were carried

out in May 1955. A rectangular grid system was used with stations at

50-foot intervals on north-south lines spaced 200 feet apart. In

regions of high magnetic gradient, readings were made at ^5-foot inter

vals. A total of 1,873 stations were read over 12 miles of chained

picket lines.

The survey was made by R. M. MacDonald, assisted by O. H.

Peters, using an Askania-Schmldt type vertical component magnetic

balance (sensitivity roughly 20 ganuuas per scale-division). The data

were reduced and plotted by R. M. MacDonald in the field and were

later checked and re-plotted by the Coupany staff in Toronto.

The results of this survey and the interpretation of the

data are presented on the attached map, at a scale of l inch to 200

feet, and with a contour interval of 100 gammas.

The two claims that form the north part of the group are of moderate to low magnetic intensity and show little magnetic relief. They are thought to be underlain by a fairly homogeneous sequence of intermediate to basic volcanics. There is no evidence of intrusive activityt folding or faulting.

In the southern block of four claims, volcanics of the sane type as above grade southward into a sequence of acidic to basic mem bers, becoming increasingly acidic towards the southern boundary of the property. A systeu of strong positive and negative anomalies strikes at roughly 1150 across the southern two claims. These represent mag netite-rich zones in the lavas which have been subjected to severe shearing in the above direction. A diabase dike strikes N-S along the eastern edge of the group. Basic magma may have been injected from the dike into the adjacent lavas in two places, along shear zones striking at 1100 and ISO0 Three oval shaped anomalies of unusual strike are interpreted as basic plugs. A shear or fault with a strike of roughly 450 is interpreted in the extreme southeast corner of the property. The lavas, plugs and northwest shear are thought to be Keewatin. The dike and the northeast shear are interpreted as Matachewan, with shear movement probably both preceding and following the intrusion of the dike.

INTERPRETATION

The following interpretation is made by a study of the character of the magnetics and by comparison with the geology as observed by A. K. Temple (see References).

Page 13: A* K. Temple lone 21, 1955€¦ · DETAILED GEOLOGY - CUMslINGS OPTION BASE MAP 42A/12S PORCUPINE-KIRKLAND ONTARIO A* K. Temple lone 21, 1955. The Cttouings Option comprise* six claitts,

Page 3

In Claims P-37634 and P-37655 t the magnetic contours are

relatively undisturbed. The intensity, which is low to moderate,

could be produced by a bedrock of fairly homogeneous volcanics of

intermediate to basic composition. These are probably andesite.

The same base level intensity persists in Claims P-37620

and P-37621, which are probably also underlain by andesite* though

minor irregularities suggest the appearance of some stringers of

rhyolite. In Claims P-37975 and P-37976, the base level drops and

the bedrock appears to be rhyolitlc with interbedded andesite in the

form of flows or sills. The strike of the lavas is roughly 1409 to

1600 .

Four sots of anomalies and two directions of shearing are

distinguished in the southern four claims. The chief shearing direc

tion is 1100 in the south, steepening to 1300 in the north. The

second shear direction is roughly 400 and is apparently confined to

the extreme southeast corner of the property.

Anomalies Al to AS are narrow positive-negative features

parallelling the major shears. They are thought to represent magnetite-

rich zones in andesite which has been metamorphosed and altered by the

strong shearing action. These anomalies are confined to the region of

strongest shearing and are characterized by the close association of

positive and negative anomaly types.

Anomaly Bl is a diabase dike. The dike crosses the zones of

northwest shearing with only minor interruption of Its strike. Some

later movement may have taken place along the shear in Claim P-37621,

but the bulk of the shearing is pre-diabase. The northeast shear in

Claim P-37976 has caused considerable displacement of the dike. It is

Page 14: A* K. Temple lone 21, 1955€¦ · DETAILED GEOLOGY - CUMslINGS OPTION BASE MAP 42A/12S PORCUPINE-KIRKLAND ONTARIO A* K. Temple lone 21, 1955. The Cttouings Option comprise* six claitts,

Page 4

no*, cer n whether this represents post-diabase movement, as shown,

or merely a change in strike through a tendency for the dike to follow

the fractured zones. Some post-diabase movement seems to have taken

place.

Anomalies CI and C2 are closely associated with the diabase

dike and lie adjacent to northwest shears in the surrounding volcanics.

They are thought to represent injections of magma or magnetite-rich

fluids from the diabase source into the fractured wallrock.

Anomalies DI to D3 are characterized by oval to circular

shape and abnormal strike. The susceptibility is intermediate between

that of extrusive andesite and diabase. Since medium-grained andesite

of probable Intrusive origin outcrops on Anomaly D3, it is probable

that intrusive andesite also underlies the other anomalies. Gabbro

would be an alternative. Anomalies DI and D2 appear to be covered bysroughly 50 and roughly 100 feet of overburden respectively.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Since some mineralization is found in the sheared andesites

in Claim P-37976, it is felt that the whole shear zone is favourable

prospecting ground. It is recommended that electromagnetic work be

r^cr.'i^ out to search for conducting bodies on strike with and in thei

regions adjacent to tllc zones of northwest shearing.^
