Our MissionGeorgia Transplant Foundation (GTF)

The mission of the Georgia Transplant Foundation is to help meet the needs of organ transplant candidates, living donors, recipients and their families by providing information and education regarding organ transplantation, granting financial assistance and being an advocate for sustaining and enriching lives everyday.

Celebrating 20 Years, Looking AheadThis year, the Georgia Transplant Foundation (GTF) will celebrate its 20th anniver-sary. Twenty years ago, kidney transplant recipient Tommy Smith dreamt that no person would ever be denied a transplant or would lose a transplanted organ due to financial challenges. With his vision and determination, the help of Georgia’s five transplant centers, community and business leaders, and the Carlos and Margue-rite Mason Trust, Tommy started the Georgia Transplant Foundation in 1992.

In the beginning, GTF’s primary goal was to provide financial assistance to enable candidates to receive a transplant and to help ease the financial burden post trans-plant. The first financial assistance grant awarded by GTF was for $100. This grant was given to a transplant recipient who had lost his home in a flood. The $100 was what was needed for a security deposit on a new apartment. Today, the average grant is more than $2,500 and is typically used to help pay for the rising costs of

insurance premiums, post transplant medications, travel expenses, lodging before and after transplant and emergency household expenses.

Today, GTF provides more than $1.2 million in direct financial assistance annually. GTF has also begun several more programs to help recipients successfully maintain their transplanted organ and become happy, successful members of the community. GTF provides mentoring, transplant wellness conferences, career counseling and job training skills, and academic scholarships to recipients, candidates and living donors throughout the state. The Transplant Fundraising Program helps transplant candidates save for the costs of post transplant medica-tions. GTF will match up to $10,000 to all qualified candidates who hold these accounts. There are currently more than 2,500 people enrolled in this program.

As we celebrate 20 years of successful milestones and enriching the lives of thousands, we are eager to look to the future. In the upcoming months and years, we hope to continue to provide life saving assistance to the growing transplant community. We hope to further partner with the transplant centers to continue to learn the needs of the patients and their families.

I would like to thank all of our donors for supporting GTF over the last 20 years and for continuing to improve the lives of the transplant population.

Sincerely,

Andy Smith, MDPresident, Board of DirectorsGeorgia Transplant Foundation

20 Years of Success....and We’re Not Done YetFinancial Assistance Programs offer transitional, short-term support to individu-als and families affected by transplantation. Financial Assistance programs are avail-able to cover the costs of emergency needs that are non-medical in nature but have a direct impact on the well-being of the trans-plant recipient, transplant-related housing expenses, pre- and post- transplant dental care, insurance premiums, expenses asso-ciated with being a living donor, as well as temporary medication assistance. GTF has awarded more than 14,000 financial assis-tance grants in the past 20 years, totaling over $11,166,788.

Transplant Fundraising Program began in an effort to assist transplant candidates and recipients in preparing financially for the on-going costs of post-transplant prescription medications. GTF offers personal accounts (matched or unmatched), account manage-ment, fundraising classes, and a personal webpage to be used for fundraising. Quali-fied candidates are eligible to receive a $10,000 maximum match, which is intended to be used primarily for prescription medica-tion costs. Since the program’s inception in 2007, more than 2,542 transplant can-didates and recipients have enrolled in the program. 2,536 of those people are eligible to receive a $10,000 match from GTF.

JumpStart helps organ transplant can-didates, recipients, and their families ac-complish career goals through employment services, strategic partnerships and edu-cational resources. JumpStart offers as-sistance in identifying career options, com-pleting skills assessment tools, defining job search techniques and an apprenticeship program with local employers. Of the more than 600 transplant recipients who have enrolled in the JumpStart Program since its inception, more than half have received full-time employment once they had completed JumpStart’s counseling and training.

Academic Scholarships are awarded to select students who are transplant recipi-ents, dependents of a transplant recipient, living donors, or the sibling of a transplant recipient under the age of 22. Seven schol-arships are awarded to students who are presently enrolled in a post-high-school accredited institution or beginning such a program. Each winner receives a $4,000 scholarship which is dispersed over a four year period. Since the program began in 1998, 87 scholars have been awarded a scholarship, totaling $348,000 in scholar-ship grants.

The Mentor Project assists transplant can-didates and recipients with the challenges they face before, during and after transplan-tation. The Mentor Project provides one-on-one contact between mentors living suc-cessfully with a transplant or living donation experience with people who are waiting for a transplant or still adjusting to transplanta-tion. Since 2001, more than 1,800 mentees have received support from the more than 600 recipients that have been trained as mentors.

Marriage Enrichment Weekend is a three-day retreat designed for couples who value their relationship and want it to be strong and enduring while they adjust to the chal-lenges related to transplantation. Couples can look forward to a weekend of sharing experiences, developing partnering skills and increasing their understanding and commitment to each other.

Trends In Transplant Conference (for-merly known as the Wellness Conference) was first held in 1997 and hosted more than 280 transplant recipients, candidates, living donors, and their family members. These one-day educational opportunities are held annually throughout the state of Georgia and cater specifically to the needs and inter-ests of the transplant community.

Fundraising at its BestA recipe for success… combine one beloved Cy Young award winner and several of his longtime friends and colleagues, a historic airplane museum, some of our city’s most cherished corporate citizens, and multitudes of enthusiastic guests, and what have you created? An incredible fundraising experience that is signature in Atlanta for sup-porting a cause that is uniquely Georgia - the 20th annual Tom Glavine Spring Training benefiting our state’s transplant candidates, recipients, donors, and families through the Georgia Transplant Foundation.

For two decades former Braves pitcher and current franchise execu-tive Tom Glavine has partnered with GTF to host our organization’s signature fundraising event. This year’s Spring Training was a true testimony that some things really do get even better with age. With more than 1,200 guests in attendance at Delta Air Line’s Heritage Museum in Atlanta, this year’s prelude to the opening of the baseball season raised over $320,000, with 92% of the funds directly impacting Georgia’s transplant community. The most amazing aspect of Spring Training is the Atlanta community’s collaboration with GTF to ensure minimum cost while generating maximum funds to make a significant difference in people’s lives.

What does that collaboration look like? Atlanta-based organizations including: Jim Ellis Audi Atlanta, Delta Air Lines, Coca-Cola Company, Shane’s Rib Shack, SunTrust, GolinHaris, and UPS - along with 61 sponsors (half of which were new this year) who provided direct finan-cial support and in-kind donations to the Spring Training effort. In-kind donations included the venue, security, food, wine, beer, soft drinks, media coverage, lighting, sound, staging, tables, games, taxi services, photography, and hundreds of amazing auction items.

The Georgia Transplant Foundation and the people it serves each day are indebted to its committed partners who make Spring Training so incredibly successful. We look forward to having additional sponsors join our dedicated partner force!

Several months after my son Tommy received a heart transplant at 8 weeks old (17 years ago this March!!), our social worker at Children’s Healthcare/Egleston asked me to participate on the GTF Board of Directors. I was im-mediately impressed. I was more than impressed- I was moved. Moved by the spirit of the founder, Tommy Smith. Moved by the motivation and dedication of the health care professionals on the board, who worked all day in their field and then did overtime at GTF to find more ways to help. There were nurses, doctors, industry professionals in health insurance, compliance and finance; all working volunteer hours to further support the transplant cause. I was moved by transplant patients themselves who com-mitted to Board and other volunteer activities. I was impressed and moved with the ‘products’ of GTF… financial assistance to cover insurance and employment gaps, fundraising assistance for transplant patients in-waiting, employment assistance, seminars and conferences on medicines, parent-ing, and so much more. I was and remain awed at how smart and informed these volunteers were about so many things that seemed so complicated to me. But mostly, I was moved and impressed with the recipients and their families who relied on GTF assistance, and how grateful they were. I ex-pect they still are.

So several years later I moved, literally. Moved with my family from At-lanta to North Carolina. While Tommy is still seen twice a year at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, I simply cannot give the volunteer time to GTF any-more from a distance. But we can give financial assistance. Gladly. That’s why I give to GTF.

Sincerely,

R. Bird Anderson, Jr.

Why I Give to GTF Donations at WorkAs the number of Georgia transplant candidates, recipients, living donors, and families has increased over the years, more clients have turned to the Georgia Transplant Foundation for information, guidance and support. GTF works hard to keep administrative costs down. We are fortunate to receive assistance in the form of generous donations from foundations, corporations, individuals and grants. Here is how generous donations were allocated in 2011 to help enrich the transplant community.

Community Partner GroupsIn 2011, Community Partner Groups raised more than $59,000 to support Geor-gia’s transplant community. Dozens of volunteers planned and implemented ten fundraisers across the state to raise money for GTF. The fundraisers included wine and cheese parties, a fashion show, a booth at the Cobb County fair, a con-cert in a park, quilt sales and even a walk.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:

A two-time liver transplant recipient, cheerleader and mentor:How Mallory Smith’s Legacy Continues

The life saving gift of organ transplant gave Mike and Lisa Smith five extra years with their loving daughter, Mallory. As a teenager, Mallory was diagnosed with Wilson’s disease and two liver transplants extended her life, giving her the op-portunity to graduate high school with honors, continue cheering, attend college, become an aunt, and mentor other teens who have received organ transplants.

After Mallory passed away in January 2011, Lisa and Mike wanted to make sure that their daughter’s legacy lived on throughout the community, especially the transplant community. With the help of their church, friends, family and fellow cheerleaders, the Smith’s planned Mallory’s Walk that would raise money to fund an academic scholarship for other transplant recipients. On September 11th, 2011 the inaugural Mallory’s Walk was hosted at their church in Kennesaw. More than 350 participants walked around their church parking lot for a little over an hour. T-shirts and refreshments were provided by local businesses and the All Stars cheerleaders provided the entertainment. In one short afternoon, Mallory’s Walk raised more than $22,000 and will fund the Mallory Smith Legacy Scholar-ship that is awarded by the Georgia Transplant Foundation annually.

If you are interested in establishing a Community Partner Group in your area or if you would like to join one, please contact Cheryl Belair at [email protected] or 678-514-1181.
