Adopt a Farmer day On Wednesday 8 May, Willoughby Girls High School, along with the majority of public schools across NSW, took part in Adopt a Farmer day, collecting gold coin donations to assist farming families across Australia suffering through drought. Members of our School’s student leadership groups also had the opportunity to meet the Deputy Premier of New South Wales, John Barilaro, and the Minister of Education, Sarah Mitchell, who visited our school to see firsthand how we were working to raise funds for this important cause. Both politicians talked to students about the impact the drought is having on farmers and their local communities, where many businesses have been forced to close due to limited funds coming into the towns. They also told us that farming communities really appreciate the concern and compassion city people demonstrate through raising awareness of their situation and sending funds to help with some day to day expenses. Officially 99.5% of NSW is suffering from drought at the moment, and if this continues, it is expected that there may also be level 1 water restrictions in city areas in the near future. By donating to this Adopt a Farmer campaign, Willoughby Girls High School students have raised $820.00, $500 of that being from the bake sale run by the environment club, in an effort to directly support farmers most in need. One of our parents, who wants to remain anonymous, also donated $200. This parent has been concerned about the drought and the plight of farmers for some time but was not sure how she could help. Her kind contribution to our fundraising efforts will ensure our contribution to our rural friends will make a significant difference. Thank you to all student, teachers and parents who have assisted us with this worthwhile cause. CharitiesDay Charities Day is fast approaching on the 31st of May with the theme, ‘Colours of the Rainbow’.   This year, we are supporting the Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) which is an independent charity protecting our ocean wildlife. Since the 1960’s, AMCS has contributed towards banning limestone and oil drilling in the Great Barrier Reef. The organisation’s expert group of scientists also carry out extensive research in threatened wetland areas and conservation reserves such as Moreton Bay, Queensland and Kakadu.  To help raise funds, the prefects are organising a raffle. If parents or community members were able to donate a prize to help the AMCS, it would be greatly appreciated. Donations may include prizes and vouchers for stalls/ experiences of any size and value.   If you are able to help support our school’s charity event and more importantly, the wellbeing of our oceans, please contact the prefects at ‘[email protected]'.  Thank you, WGHS Prefects

Year11Textiles&Design Year 11 Textiles and Design students have completed their first unit of work. Their task was to design and produce a corset that drew inspiration from historical, cultural or contemporary factors. Students needed to alter the basic pattern and produce a protype. The corset needed to have a structural feature and contain at least 1 embellishment technique. Students drew inspiration from The Greatest Showman, Alice in Wonderland, African Culture and Burlesque. Students learnt many new fabric manipulation techniques, such as smocking, piping, and lace insertion. Students also learnt to create their own fabric using solvy (a washable film) and learnt the finer art of beading.  They are truly gifted in the design students and have produced amazing, highly creative projects.   Mrs Blomfield Head Teacher TAS

Year10Election Year 10 Commerce Election – The Results Are Still Up In The Air!  After weeks of furious campaigning and counting the Year 10 Commerce Results are still to be finalised. The Commerce Election was a Term 1 project that required students to form political parties and campaign for the policies they believe in. The initial winner of the election using an optional preferential voting system was the Tabalician Party. This result, however, was appealed by other political parties who identified the handing out of sweets at the election polling station as unethical behavior that may have caused voters to be influenced in their voting. The appeal was received by the School Electoral Commission and they determined that the Tabalician Party should be removed from the counting and a recount was ordered. After the recount the “For the Future” Party was announced as the winner. Students from the Tabalician Party and The Meme Party then appealed this decision. It was advised that an independent hearing should take place later in the term to finalise the result. Parties are now briefing their legal teams for this hearing. An update will be posted in the next newsletter.  Well done to all parties on an outstanding and hard fought campaign. Charlotte McLeod pictured – winner of the recount with the “For the Future Party”  Mr Palmer

GoldDukeofEdinburghQualifyingHikeOn the 10 April, twenty one Year 12 and twelve Year 11 students hiked 40 km through the bush from Hawkesbury River Station to Berowra Station. The first day of the hike had wonderful weather and we took a ferry from Brooklyn ferry wharf. For the first day navigation was extremely difficult as the track we were searching for was overgrown. Luckily after hours of bush bashing we finally made it to camp. That night at camp, we lit the fire with a flint and steel after numerous failed attempts that merely produced sparks. We finally got some kindling lit and had a great camp fire to later cook our marshmallows.  The second day of the hike was by far the longest, luckily a large amount of this was on a fire trail. Our camp that night was Pindar cave, providing protection from the rain which meant that we didn’t have to set up our tents. That night we decided we wanted to build the fire to the roof of the cave and piled massive piles of dried leaves atop the fire whilst we chanted ‘TO THE ROOF, TO THE ROOF!!’  On the third day of the hike we had a great opportunity to temporarily rejoin civilisation for a few hours and we got to stop off at a great cafe for burgers and chips and most importantly a bathroom. That afternoon we hiked up the largest hill of the hike, however we barely noticed this as our group created our own cadence call about Casey’s Crackers (our group name). That night there was little cloud cover so our group took the opportunity to sleep under the stars without our tents which was a really great experience.  The final day of the hike began fairly smoothly after our night under the stars and during the middle of the day on our final stop before we would reach the end of the hike we stopped at a picnic table where one of the boomerang leaders brought out an entire golden pineapple for the groups to share as this was the Year 12’s final hike.

Overall this was the best hike I’ve participated in and all of us felt that we had grown closer together as a group and are thrilled that we have been the first group of Willoughby Girls to complete the Gold Duke of Ed.

ParentingStyles–Whattypeofparentareyou?There are so many different opinions offered on how best to parent. New parents will often have firm beliefs about how they wish to balance love and discipline, but this ideal often goes out the window when a toddler throws their first tantrum in the supermarket!  Raising children can bring parents and caregivers great joy despite many learning ‘on the job’ and growing into the role through experience and understanding. Children will always flourish in a warm and loving environment, supported by clear guidance.  In this Special Report, parents and caregivers can gain a greater understanding of the four defined parenting styles by taking part in the quiz. It can guide parents towards deciding which style they wish to adopt and the effects it may have on their children.   We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.  Here is the link to your special report

SRCAfternoonTeaOn Tuesday 7 May, the senior Willoughby Girls SRC hosted an afternoon tea to connect with other schools in the area and share our various initiatives. We began the afternoon by getting to know one another with a game of speed dating, learning about each other’s various passions and hobbies.  It was interesting to discover why all of us chose to take up leadership positions in a school and inspiring to be surrounded by so many passionate young leaders. After various bonding activities and an intense game of Bench‐ball, we discussed our most successful fundraising initiatives so far.   Willoughby Girls SRC shared our crazy hair day initiative (which seemed to impress all the other schools) and gathered some new ideas on how to raise funds for charity, besides hosting bake sales! It was really helpful hearing what each school’s focus for the year was and which initiatives worked better than others.   Thank you to our Year 11 SRC leader, Aria Pape, for organising this event and to all the schools who attended; Knox Grammar, Epping Boys High School, North Sydney Boys High, Ravenswood, North Sydney Girls, Marist Brothers, Hunters Hill High, Roseville College, Sydney Boys High, Wenona and James Ruse High.  The Willoughby Girls SRC had so much fun hosting this afternoon tea and can’t wait to attend more in the future!

Year9Commerce‐"ethicalconsumerism" Dear Australian consumer,   Your latest fashionable t‐shirt cost me my life. I’m forced to be separated from my family, cramped in unhygienic slums to earn a meagre salary for my family back home to barely survive. Disagreements leads to a termination of employment, strikes lead to cries of terror and protests leads to death.  The flashy billboards that advertise your favourite brands act as a façade to the mistreatment of millions of Bangladeshis. Every morning as you wonder what you should have for breakfast, I’m wondering if I can survive tomorrow. Cramped into my small shack, I am expected to be able to support myself and my family with the $3 that I get paid every day. The dripping of my roof disrupts my mind from constantly questioning the prospect of a better future as I barely have enough room to sleep between these confined walls. Since I have moved to these slums for work, I traded my health for minimum wage as I feel both my social and physical wellbeing rapidly deteriorating away.  Inside stuffy unsupported buildings, I am spending half my day slaving away making your clothes. Is this what life has to offer? If I fall sick, I receive no sympathy but rather a punishment in form of less pay, leaving me spiralling down in debt. My children are hungry and I can’t do anything about it. Even when it’s the company’s fault for my declining wellbeing such as collapsing buildings, I receive little to no compensation. Please understand my pain as every seam and embellishment on your jeans is produced by the exploitation of workers, the injustice in each stitch and the sorrow in each zipper.  Nicole W – Year 9
