privately managed belt of mangroves in

Vikhroli, Mumbai. A first-of-its-kind initiative

GREEN INITIATIVE – BEED PROJECT

Godrej Group init iated a 3,300-hectare

integrated watershed development with

NABARD and Nisarg Vikas BSS in the

drought prone area of Maharashtra – Beed.

The main aim of this program is to make

this planet water posit ive by 2020.

With plantations of 2 lakh saplings, this

development program expects to restore close

to 10 million kl of water per annum, which

would be made available for agricultural

requirements and would mitigate approx.

25 million cubic mts. of water in the future.

The projects across

different regions cover

over 10,000 hectare of

land and will help restore

the ecological balance of

these geographic areas.

This would result in improved

agricultural productivity, which in

turn will help generate local

employment, reduce migration

and increase household income.

IMPROVED AGRI PRODUCTIVITY A DROUGHT-FREE LAND

Watershed development involves

restructuring of a valley to arrest or slow

down rainfall and a carbon sequestration

program for better percolation and

fertility of the soil.

From 2015 till date, women

actively participated in this

watershed development

and it helped them to form

credit-linked women SHGs.

Godrej Reserve, a 92.7 acre plotted

development, is home to a self-sustaining

forest ecosystem. Created in collaboration with

Afforestt, a Bangalore-based afforestation

consultancy that’s focused on bringing back

native forests, the forest at Godrej Reserve is a

testament to the eco-friendly systems that

drive the community.

Reducing the amount of water used is one of the

first steps in conserving water. And that’s why

we have smart meters that help us measure the

amount of water used and thereby reduce

wastage. We have water-saving fixtures like dual

flush toilets that help us reduce the flow rate by

3 to 6 litres per flush. And we have water

aerators that reduce the overall water flow by

upto 50%.

Every drop used in Godrej Aqua is recycled with a

rigorous three-step purification process. This process

first begins with the Grey Water Treatment Plant. It

then goes to the Swale where the water is purified

naturally by plants and filter media within a giant

trough specially designed to treat waste water.

After this, the water is sent to the Advanced

Treatment Plant where it goes through Reverse

Osmosis (RO), Ultra Filtration (UF), and UV or

ionisation disinfection processes. And finally, the

water is clean enough to be pumped back into the

home for domestic uses.

The water that is leftover after the entire process of

recycling takes places goes into recharging and

reactivating borewells that lie dormant. We also help

the recharging process by using 55 kl of waste water

from homes daily for gardening during non-rainy

seasons.
