Dear Supporters, Advocates, Donors, and Community Members, Thank you for your continued and sustained support of the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art! Your support helps us do what we do best—engage with issues surrounding social justice, providing a platform for dialogue and change, and finally, cultivate a nurturing space for some of the most creative thinkers of our day. We simply would not be who we are without you! Thank you. Annual Reports help us reflect on what we accomplished together over the past year, and Fiscal Year 2018-2019 was a historic one for UMOCA. This year, we set a goal for stronger financial solvency. We are pleased to report that we closed out FY 18-19 with a positive remaining balance of $128,000—a first in over a five-year period. The numbers included on the following pages reflect this successful new direction. Part of this success comes from being awarded several major grants from some of the most important foundations in the state. For example, since April alone, we were awarded funding from: Marriner Eccles Foundation, Utah Film Commission, POPS—Professional Outreach Program in School: Utah State Board of Education, Nordstrom, Doctorow Foundation, Utah Division of Arts and Museum, KW & ER Dumke, Jr. Foundation, and the Salt Lake City Arts Council. For some of these grants, we were first-time awardees. Such awards suggest the community’s support of and belief in the vital work our organization does to serve the public good. Further, we continued to renew our status as a Tier 1 ZAP supported organization, one of only a handful of organizations in the county to qualify for this distinction and essential financial support. We did all of this while organizing 33 exhibitions (both in-house and at Trolley Square), traveling across the state in the Art Truck, teaching young students about contemporary art, serving at-risk youth through our LGBTQ+ focused OutLoud program, and helping Utah artists through the Artist-in-Residence program. Ultimately, at the close of the year, we had served tens of thousands of people with our compelling programming and exhibitions—all for free. We also, while dressed in white and having a blast, staged our annual gala, GLOW! And as we look forward to Fiscal Year 2019-2020, I want to express my sincere gratitude for all the many invested supporters who care deeply about UMOCA’s success. I am optimistic about all that we have planned and forthcoming! Thank you again for being such a crucial and significant part of our success.

STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES
UMOCA is an independent non-profit organization. Museum funding comes from foundations, corporations, individual donors, and a $5 suggested donation for admission. These funds make it possible to make 98% of our programs available for free, ensuring a diverse demographic of participants.
UMOCA continues to work to stabilize our finances. Individual giving, memberships, special events and asks, grants, and earned income from rentals increased over the past year.

EDUCATION
UMOCA’s education programs invite curiosity and offer opportunities to engage in hands-on art-making activities and exploration of the pressing issues of our time through contemporary art.
Programs include the Art Truck, Family Art Saturday, Out Loud, in-depth workshops with art professionals, and tours for all ages. Throughout these programs, we encourage conversations about the role of art in our lives and our community.
“The art truck was successful in getting the kids excited about art, experiencing a new perspective, and having an opportunity to share their ideas and stories.”
“It is a pleasure to be involved in the art truck. Most of our students do not experience art and it is great that you come to us.”
“Without my experiences at Out Loud, I know for a fact that my growth would’ve been stunted and I believe that the access to resources that Out Loud gave me is the reason I am alive today.”
EDUCATION - OUT LOUD
EDUCATION - ART TRUCK
Survey results for the year show that 95% of Art Truck visits met or exceeded participants’ expectations and 100% felt the tour got the students talking and engaged.
The program served 14 teens who went on to mentor other LGBT youth in their schools and communities. It consists of 10 workshops culminating in a two-month museum exhibition.
As in previous years, the exhibition traveled to the opening of the Damn These Heels Film Festival (in partnership with Utah Pride Center and Utah Film Center), but new for 2018-2019, the work was also shown at Sugar Space Arts Warehouse and Mestizo Coffee House.

The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA) is Utah’s only museum solely devoted to contemporary arts and culture. Through our exhibitions and programs, we engage with social issues, provide a platform for dialogue, and create a nurturing space for artists to work and develop, as we advance and support the contemporary arts community in Utah.
Alta Rawlins Jensen, an activist and visionary, conceived of a contemporary art center for Salt Lake City and Utah. In 1931, she and those who shared her dream co-founded the Art Barn Association. Beginning in 1932, the Art Barn, began to host art classes and exhibit artwork. Although work by Utah artists was shown, there was a larger emphasis on introducing the local community to artists from outside the state. Numerous exhibitions were curated by galleries or museums in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

In 1958, the Art Barn’s name changed to Salt Lake Art Center, and in 1961, the first paid full-time director was hired. At that time, the institution began a more in-depth exploration of Abstract Expressionism, architecture, and sculpture. It moved to its current location in 1979.
In 2011, SLAC became the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, a name that better communicates the organization’s mission.
