Dear Friends,

The past year was the first year of a new Strategic Plan that Smith’s staff and board of directors created to guide our work over the period 2017-2019. The planning process included a revision to Smith’s mission, and the articulation of vision and values statements that define our organization.

The plan has three overarching goals:

1) Actively promote Smith’s mission in the Playhouse and Playground to provide a richer visitor experience

2) Strengthen community partnerships, with a focus on immediate neighbors

3) Ensure Smith’s financial stability to expand operations and complete the capital campaign

For the first goal, we were excited to deepen our staff capacity by hiring Rebecca Dhondt, as Director of Visitor Programs and Fun. She is revamping the Playhouse experience, from improved play materials and special activities led by new part-time Play Activators, to messaging for adults about play and data collection and interpretation about what visitors enjoy most.

Support for Rebecca’s position is due, in part, to generous program grants we received from the William Penn Foundation in 2017, which also enabled us to realign veteran staff member Kate Zmich’s expertise in play to a new role –Director of Community Programs and Fun – and to focus on the second goal in the plan. Kate’s leadership on our new “Everyday Literacy” and “Talk in Up” programs, and our ongoing work with the Free Library is described on page 8. These initiatives are the result of multi-year efforts to sustain partnerships with peer organizations whose missions intersect with Smith’s, and whose constituents live nearby.

The third goal is the most ambitious, as we aim to raise the capital funds needed to complete the renovation of the Playhouse, redesign the front lawn for more play opportunities, and build an endowment to support Smith’s second century – all while continuing to expand and improve our everyday operations. We are so grateful to our early campaign donors, and to our elected officials – State Senators Vincent Hughes and Sharif Street and State Representatives Vanessa Lowery Brown and Donna Bullock for their efforts to show Governor Tom Wolf how important Smith is, and to help earn a $500K RACP grant award from the Commonwealth toward our planned restoration efforts.

Of course, the most important aspect of the Strategic Plan and the activities it is driving is kids. Kids and their need for more play time, for better-designed and more exciting places to play, and for adults who understand that play is one of the most important ways that the young people in their families and class-rooms spend their time. We’ll always be working toward these goals.

Thank you for joining us in promoting play!

On September 23, Smith hosted its second annual Donor Day, where board members, donors, and staff also celebrated Smith’s new Historic Marker from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Chairwoman Nancy Moses and her 7-year old grandson Bjorn led the unveiling of the marker on this special day. In just a few words, Bjorn expressed his appreciation for Smith: “My favorite part is the big slide. It’s so big you could fit a cow on there!”

You can check out Smith’s new historical marker on Reservoir Drive in front of the Playhouse! Many thanks to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission for recognizing Smith and its importance to the communities we serve.

In 2017, Smith hosted six family events that welcomed 5,283 children and adults, with an average of 25% of those families receiving complimentary tickets through our Play For All program.

At Play-A-Palooza, the kick-off of the Playground season, 1,792 attendees made mud pies, planted seeds, learned about bats, tasted vegetables and of course, played! The Kidchella Music Festival celebrated its 4th year and featured performances by six nationally acclaimed children’s music artists, a youth performance stage, local food trucks, and activities such as hula-hooping, face painting, photo booths and more. In October, Healthy Halloween was a hit and welcomed Governor Tom Wolf who tried his hand on the banjo! We closed the year with a very snowy Winter Wonderland in December, where attendees warmed-up with hot chocolate and s’mores while watching ice carver Roger Wing make a one-of-a kind snowflake!

Smith welcomed Rebecca Dhondt in September 2017 in a new staff role. With a commitment to unstructured free play and a strong background in early childhood development, Rebecca creates and implements informal play and learning activities on-site and is leading an exciting transformation

of some of the Playhouse areas.

Along with Smith’s Play Activators, she also shares information and engages with adults to help them learn more about the importance of play.

Smith’s Playground, which in years past closed from January through March, now remains open during the winter, allowing families to enjoy both indoor and outdoor play for free year-round!

Smith expanded a tradition of providing first arts experiences for families by featuring a variety of live performances by artists including Noggin Hill Blue Grass, Emmy-Award winning Alex and the Kaleidoscope, Philadelphia Spin Coalition, and School of Dance Arts.

Thanks to the Philadelphia Office of Arts and Culture’s Performances in Public Spaces program, Smith visitors were enchanted by Walnut Street Theatre’s presentation of “A Philly Phairy Tale” and invited to take a journey through the Playground with Project Capoeira!

In addition, the Dance Program at Drexel University’s Westphal College of Media Arts and Design shot a 12-minute video of an award-winning dance piece at Smith and led an interactive lecture and demonstration for visitors.

Smith received two program grants from the William Penn Foundation in 2017 to support new efforts to link play and learning. The first, “Everyday Literacy,” is a $200,000, 2-year grant to implement a play-based program for children and families in North Philadelphia. In partnership with the Parent–Child Home Program, “Everyday Literacy” will increase caregiver’s knowledge and children’s pre-literacy skills in an immersive, literacy-rich environment. This program will show improved child interest, ability and engagement with literacy, and improved caregiver attitudes, knowledge and skills about literacy.

The second program, “Talk It Up,” is a $190,000, 2-year grant inspired by Temple University Professor Dr. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek’s research on providing learning opportunities in out-of-school settings. We will install signs to prompt high-quality conversations between caregivers and young children in everyday spaces, including grocery stores. Early findings suggest that this simple way to enrich children’s environments and experiences might have a big impact on their developing literacy.

In December, an exciting new play space designed by DIGSAU, Erector Sets Inc., and Studio Ludo was installed at the Cecil B. Moore Library that includes a kid-friendly climbing wall! Smith has been coaching librarians on safety, playability, and links between play, learning, and literacy at the Cecil B. Moore library, as well as the Whitman and Wyoming library branches, which will be renovated in 2018.

Smith hosted several events in 2017 to promote the importance of play in a child’s life. In July, Smith and partners hosted a public forum featuring internationally-known researcher, writer and consultant on childhood and play, Tim Gill, as well as Kathryn Ott Lovell, Commissioner of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation; Dr. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, Director of the Temple Infant & Child Lab; and Meghan Talarowski, Founder and Director of Studio Ludo, who discussed the state of play in Philadelphia and beyond. In August, Danish play expert Mathias Poulsen led an adult “Play Jam” at Smith where participants engaged in a conversation about play in urban environments and hands-on activities. In September, Justin Markussen-Brown, Ph.D. from KOMPAN’s Play Institute in Denmark, gave a talk at Smith about his research findings on play and language development.

Thanks to Governor Wolf, elected officials, and Smith supporters who contacted their Representative and Senators in Harrisburg, Smith received a $500,000 Regional Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant in December 2017 to support our planned Playhouse renovations, including new public restrooms and an Urban Nature Preschool. Work on Smith’s 118 year-old building, which is the first phase of our larger Preserving Play capital campaign, will begin as soon as we receive an additional $1.8M in gifts that Smith’s staff and board are working hard to secure every day! For more information on our project and ways to get involved, please contact Meg Wise at [email protected].

Smith’s 10th annual adults-only celebration welcomed 224 guests for a festive evening of delicious food and drinks, a silent auction, live music, and rides down the Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide

that raised over $45,000 for Smith and honored local play champion Dr. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and Smith volunteers Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, La Salle University chapter.
