Issue 136 October 2016

A letter from your Chairman

Dear All,

On Thursday 22nd September we had our second fish, chips and Quiz night. Everyone

I have spoken to said how much they enjoyed it and since our treasurer has decided

we made a small profit we might try another one in the New Year. Thanks go to Mary

for all the organising and to Pauline Ashby for the actual quiz – my table came first (as

against last during the previous event) and I answered at least 3 questions (but did

well with the Dingbats round)!

As a number of members complained about the last Christmas Party we are trying

something different this year. We have a speaker, Derek Harris with a talk called ‘Noel

Noel No!’, and are having nibbles and a drink. The meeting will be by ticket only and

the tickets are priced at a very reasonable £2 including the raffle. Your ticket will be

your raffle ticket too, so do try to bring it with you. Christine is taking bookings so form

an orderly queue. Get yours while stocks last. No Twelve days of Christmas this year

I am sorry to say! If you are sorry there is no normal Christmas Party this year why

not join the committee and change the new policy? We are still looking for a Speaker

Secretary to help Valerie, a Newsletter editor and a Website manager and two more

general committee members.

During September I sent out 197 emails to those of you who gave us email addresses

for our database. I asked everyone who read their email to reply to it so that we could

see how many actually read them. I received the following replies:-

Within the first 6 hours 39 replies; after 24 hours the number had crept up to 68; during

the next three weeks (some people were on holiday) we finally reached a total of 106.

So – just over half of our members with email addresses actually read their post and

no-one volunteered for the Committee positions advertised in the email. There is room

for more to join my Computer Club!

Alan

Apologies for the absence of a paper copy of the newsletter last month. Hopefully you all had a look

at the September newsletter on our website.

The speaker this month is Bill Grove who will be talking on ‘Phonographs and Gramophones’ complete with demonstrations. Bill has stepped in at short notice, so please give him a warm welcome.

Music Appreciation We met at Ted and Enid's for our afternoon of Spanish music starting off with Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe singing Barcelona, next The intro to the Victoria Requiem, followed by Julian Bream and John Williams joining forces with Spanish music. On to Blue Spanish Eyes with Al Martino then some Buddy Holly, then the soothing Ravel, an exciting rendition of Spanish Bull fight music followed to stir us up, Next was Turandot's Nessus Dorma followed by some flamenco music, onward to Miles Davis, then Julia Migenef Johnson gave us some Carmen, We completed the recital with Mario Lanza singing Granada, altogether a most entertaining afternoon.

Medium Walking Group We started our walk on Tuesday 27th September 2016 with the weather being overcast and windy. Eleven of us set off from The Black Horse, Nassington, led by David Hamilton.

Craft Group

At our craft group we all covered a book with fabric. We chose notebook, diary or journal to cover and chose from a variety of material, first cutting the correct size. Using double sided tape the material was stuck all around the book or part round with another fabric to contrast. We helped each other with the tape and had some good finished products. Our next meeting will be 26th October when we will make decorative hoops for Christmas.

Angela Deans

We set off passing the Church and then went through the fields passing near to Morton Sale Wood heading towards Sulehay Cottages. A stop was made near to a disused quarry then we continued on to Old Sulehay Forest

We then turned towards Yarwell, skirted the village and then went across the fields back to Nassington for lunch. We had a very pleasant walk of 5.5 miles for which we thank David very much.

John Andrews

Spanish Group With half our group on holiday we revised verbs and the past tense. We continue to make progress and are halfway through Talk Spanish Book 2.

Geraldine Hardwick

For the November walk we will be meeting at the Saracen's head at Little Brington, 10.00am for 10.15am start. Jenny Goddard and John Andrews will lead.

Gardening Group We met on Wednesday 14th September to discuss any gardening problems. The lack of rain and the wind has certainly affected the gardens this year. Despite the weather we have had a good crop of tomatoes and beans and the flowers were beautiful. We looked around Chris and Pete's garden and admired their fruit trees, flowers and shrubs. We discussed ideas for collecting and storing seeds ready for next year. Next meeting , Wednesday 5th October. We hope to visit Milton Ernest Garden Centre. Please meet at Chris's house in Gotch Road at 10am. Contact Chris on 01536 723145 if interested.

Julie and Jessie

Kettering U3A Walking Group This group meets on the 1st Wednesday of the month for a walk average 5 miles. For details of the next walk contact David Hamilton on 01536 518900

Making Music We spent the sessions going through our extensive repertoire. Davy taught me a new bass riff which we can’t fit into any of the tunes yet. Beginners are welcome - chords are kept to the basic ones as far as possible - tunes range from 'A little old wine drinker me' to 'You raise me up' - few modern tunes, we like melody. Why not join us?

Discussion Group The Discussion group met on Monday 19th Sept at my home. We asked the four members of our group who voted to leave the EU if they were pleased with the progress so far!! A couple of cynics felt we will never leave the EU!! On a lighter note we asked the men in the group if they would like to have been stay at home Dads. Conversely, would us girls like to have been the wage earners. Interesting comments! Over tea and biscuits we discussed exorcism and ghosts. Great conversations over refreshments! Next meeting will be on Oct 17th at 2pm. We have room for one or two new members if they want to give us a go.

Important notice We now need to compile a list of people prepared to run the tea/coffee counter next year. We need two people each month and a member of the centre is always present. You can volunteer individually, or in pairs if you would like to do it with a friend. If you are willing to help, please put your name down on the list at the Groups table. Thank you.
