Areas of Study….

This is a Level 3 Certificate in Quantitative Reasoning. It is designed to support post-16 learners with the mathematical and statistical needs of their further study of other subjects, as well as for employment and everyday life.

This qualification gives learners the math-ematical skills to tackle problems in a variety of authentic situations. It enables learners to strengthen the mathematical knowledge and skills which they have learnt at GCSE so that they can apply them to the problems which they will en-counter in further study, life and employ-ment. The use of technology – in particu-lar, spreadsheets – is an integral part of the course.

Using mathematics creatively to address authentic problems, communicating, think-ing clearly and evaluating quantitative statements are features of this qualifica-tion. The ability to reason confidently using quantitative information and to check the accuracy of statements made by others is important for all future study and employ-ment as well as for effective participation in everyday life.

Areas of Study….

The course consists of the following 3 modules in Year One:

Pure Core 1: Year One is a big step up from GCSE. The processes and thinking skills used are a higher level than anything you have studied previously. This module is designed to link much of your learning at GCSE with the new skills needed to be successful this year and beyond.

In PC1 you will extend your knowledge of graphs and develop your algebra skills further. You will cover topics such as Co-ordinate Geometry, Polynomials, Quadratic graphs and equations, Differentiation and Integration.

Pure Core 2: This module builds on the skills and processes developed in PC1 but to a higher standard, with the introduction of different types of Maths. These include the use of Radians, new trigonometry, the idea of indices and logarithms, and the study of sequences and series.

Applied Maths Statistics 1:

This is a stand alone module. You will learn how to apply Maths to solve/understand real life situations with a variety of statistical tools.

There is also the opportunity to study more Applied Maths subjects (such as Decision and Mechanics) alongside Further Pure Maths by opting to study AS Further Maths as well.

Art, Photography, Textiles On the Sixth Form BTEC course students are introduced to a variety of experiences, a range of media, 2D and 3D techniques along with Art History and contextual studies. The course is vocational and students will consider various work related briefs. Work will be assessed through Coursework Portfolio including sketch-books and 3D pieces.

Students can either study as 1 Unit or 3 Units, depending on the depth of study required.

Exams will take place at the end of the 2 year course in order for you to integrate your knowledge and understanding of the different topical areas studied throughout the course. Paper 1 - Written 2hr exam/100 marks/33.3% of the overall A level grade. All 3 sections of the paper are compulsory: Section A - multiple choice -15mks available Section B - short answer questions - 35mks available Section C - 2 essay questions - 25mks Paper 2 - Written 2hr exam/100 marks/33.3% of the overall A level grade. 3 data response compulsory questions, each worth 33 marks made up of 3-4 questions. At A-level the course requires you to complete 3 units. The units consist of:

Paper 1: Education with Theory and Methods You will learn about why some people do better than others in school, the purpose of school and how the education system interacts with the rest of society. You will look at research done by Sociologists and complete your own; including questionnaires, interviews and observations of teaching and learning in school.

Paper 2: Global Development and Health Global Development: You will study why there are differences in wealth and development across the world. You will find out what improvements have been made and how effective they are.

Health: You’ll study how the health system (with all its inequalities) works in the UK and internationally. This includes definitions of health, illness and disability.

Future Careers Sociology offers valuable preparation for careers in journalism, politics, public relations, business, or public administration - fields that involve investigative skills and working with diverse groups. Many students choose Sociology because they see it as a broad base for professions such as law, education, medicine, social work, and counselling. An A level in Sociology provides entry to higher education to study these fields.

It complements most other A-levels & equivalents, particularly Psychology and Health and Social Care.

A LEVEL SOCIOLOGY

EXAMINATION BOARD: AQA

Assessment There is no coursework and this is a two year course.

Students will take three 2 hour exam papers; one for each of the areas of study at the end of their second year. Each paper is worth a third of their final result.

Future Careers Philosophy & Ethics specification, makes it ideally suited for students looking for a course that leaves open a large number of career and higher education options.

It is a highly regarded qualification by universities. These include:

Politics, Law, Social Sciences, police, teaching, medicine, business, environment, armed forces, scientific research, media, journalism, art, community or culture work.

Paper 3: Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods You will study the reason why people commit crimes, who commits crimes and how we decide what is and isn’t a crime. This will examine a variety of sociological perspec-tives.

Developments in Religious Thought - Religious beliefs, values and teachings. - Their interconnections and how they vary historically and in the contemporary world. - Sources of religious wisdom and authority . - Practices which shape and express religious identity, and how these vary within a tradition. - Significant social and historical developments in theology and religious thought . - Key themes related to the relationship between religion and society.

Areas of Study… In the first year: Paper 1: Sources of Law and Legal Systems How parliamentary makes our law; how parliament delegates its law making powers the need for this, controls on it and problems with it; judge made law, its continuing importance and evaluation of it; and finally the judiciary including how judges are selected, appointed and trained, their independence from the state and how they can be dismissed. Paper 2: Introduction to Liability Introduction to criminal liability including the theory behind the physical and mental elements of a crime, basic rules on non-fatal assaults and criminal procedure including sentencing. Introduction to tort which covers what needs to be proved to show someone is negligent and owes you compensation for injuries or damage to property they caused, how compensation is made up and how civil cases come to trial.  

 

 

 

Assessment There are four exams two in the first year, both 90 minutes long and two in the second year one being 90 minutes and the other 2 hours with no coursework. Future Careers As well as careers as solicitors and barristers other careers include consumer advice, law enforcement roles with the police, trading standards, the environment agency and business careers generally.

In the second year: Paper 3: Criminal Law Includes detailed knowledge of non-fatal offences against the person, murder and manslaughter, the partial defences of loss of control and diminished responsibility and general defences of insanity, automatism, intoxication, consent and self-defence. Paper 4: Tort and Concepts of Law Tort includes a detailed knowledge of more areas of negligence such as liability for psychiatric injury, product liability and economic losses and other areas such as occupiers’ liability and nuisance. Concepts involves considering law and morality, balancing conflicting interests, judicial creativity and fault.

Student aptitude and entry requirements Students are expected to have performed to at least a Merit or a B grade in their relevant BTEC or GCSE PE course.

GCSE grades of at least a B are also highly recommended in English and Science. An active role in competitive sport inside and outside of school is highly desirable.

BTEC Nationals are widely recognised by industry and HE institutes. If you are more suited to a vocational qualification then this could be the course for you.

Areas of Study The course requires you to complete 4 units. The units consist of: Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development Physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across human lifespan. Biological, environmental, societal & financial factors, predictable & unpredictable factors, psychological & physical effects of ageing. Unit 2: Working in Health & Social Care A broad view of the health & social care sector. Introduction to working practices, codes of practice & regulation. Roles & responsibilities of people who work in the sector, roles of organisations & working with people with specific care and support needs. Unit 3: Meeting Individual Care Needs Completion of a report relating to the care and support provided for individuals drawing together underpinning values and principles applied through working practices including multi-disciplinary working. Report demonstrates application of transferable and specialist knowledge & skills. Unit 4: Sociological Perspectives The application of sociological approaches to health & social care and explore inequalities, demographic change, and patterns and trends in social groups.

BTEC L3 HEALTH &SOCIAL CARE

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport is designed to develop the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills essential within the sports industry.

Developing an understanding of the human body and how it is affected by physical activity, the health and safety factors involved in sports participation, the key principles involved in the coaching process, the fitness requirements and training methods needed for different sports as well as how to create fitness training programmes.

Future Careers The course can lead to a career in sports coaching, leisure management, fitness instructing, PE Teaching and to other further education courses (University or College).

Future Careers Health & Social Care offers valuable preparation for careers in all branches of health and social care, teaching, custodial services and any career where understanding people is important, such as counselling. This BTEC is the equivalent of 1 A Level and provides entry to higher education. It complements most other A-levels, particularly Psychology and Sociology.

Assessment Units of work are assessed using grades: Pass, Merit, Distinction.

Exploring Business - Internal assessment through coursework

Why study English Literature?

An A Level in English Literature is viewed by employers and higher education institutions alike as an esteemed qualification, highly desirable in many job sectors and areas of study. It is a subject for students who enjoy reading and discussing literature, who are adept at bringing to the surface texts’ deeper meanings, and who want to challenge themselves by studying a wide range of novels, plays and poetry. You will learn how to analyse, interpret, compare and understand texts; how to construct an argument in writing; and how to evaluate the influence of various contextual factors on a text’s reception and production. Graduates of A Level English Literature are readers for life and feel more empowered to tackle texts outside of their comfort zones as a result of their study.

This subject will be of particular interest to those who want to go on to study English Literature, English Language, Philosophy, History, Communication Studies, Theology, Law, Classical Studies, Art History or Social Studies, among others, at university. Additionally, a qualification in English Litera-ture will be especially beneficial for students interested in a career in public relations, advertising, television and the media, law, publishing, journalism, copy writing, editing, human relations, administration, diplomacy, politics, international communications, charity work or teaching.
