So I’m a level 1, so what?

To borrow (and tweak a little) from Shania Twain, “that DO IMPRESS US MUCH!”The question is, what is next and why does the chapter pay for you to be a level 1?The answers are many.

First, we want everyone to subscribe to the motto of safety! It really is more than justa patch! With your commitment to level 1 you are agreeing that safety is a priority toyou. Hence we get the phrase, “my safety is your responsibility” (thank you JimWaddell). Another reason that the chapter pays for your level 1 is that it is Rider Edu-cation that gives us our tax-exempt status. But the best reason is that we are commit-ted to safety and we want you to enjoy and reap the benefits of moving up in the lev-els of Rider Education and becoming more proficient on our beautiful GoldWings!

Well then, what do you have to do to become a level 2? The answer is, to become aTour Rider or Co-rider you need to 1) be a GWRRA member enrolled as a Level I(there is no renewal fee to be at level 1); 2) Hold a current motorcycle endorsementon your driver’s license; 3) Have 5,000 Safe Miles as a GWRRA member, we’ll ex-plain this later, and 4) Complete a safety course like ERC (Experienced RiderCourse) within the past two years. For those of you with co-riders you will want to doGWRRA’s 2-Up, or if on a Trike, the Trike ERC. The Co-rider may substitute theGWRRA Co-Rider Seminar, which the rider should attend as well even though it doesnot satisfy this requirement for you. Level 2 does have to be renewed each January, right now it’s only $5.00/person and life members are free except for the year bar!!!

Okay, so now you’re a level 3, we are cookin’ now!!! At level 3 you become a Certi-fied Tour Rider and/or Co-Rider. You are movin’ up the ladder and your commitmentto safety is getting even stronger. By level 3 you don’t miss PLP’s because you un-derstand and have experienced their wonderful benefit and you are even starting toenjoy the Top Gun training. (Breathe Mickey, breathe!) You have maintained your level2 status, meaning you have paid your renewal and you have taken First Aid or CPRtraining and have become certified. Our next class will be November 9th with ourwonderful, and funny instructor, Thom Somes. He is fabulous, and we are lookingforward to attending his class in November! The other requirements just seem to usto be “no brainers”!!! You now must officially carry a first aid kit on the Wing. Whatyou haven’t been doing that already? This is something you “never leave home with-out”! You also now are setting an example for safe riding and this includes wearingprotective riding apparel, including long pants, long sleeved shirts, over the ankleboots, glasses and gloves, not open-fingered gloves and of course your helmet!Your renewal of level 3 also happens in January each year and it’s only $4/person andyou don’t pay to renew your level 2, so it’s only a renewal cost for safety of $4/person,cheap at half the price and again life members pay no renewal fee just for the yearpin!!!!

Mike’s Safety Tip of the Month:

Remember, “My safety is your responsibility!”

While scanning ahead, notice changes in the road surface. The color, shine or texture could be giving you valuable information.

Member recruitment is not as scary as many believe.Granted, it’s not always easy at first to walk up to astranger to talk about their Wing or Valk and the ben-efits of belonging to GWRRA. But the more you doit the easier it becomes. GWRRA and the Chapterhave several member recruitment tools available for

you to carry on your bike or in your car. Most of the Chapter staff carry extranewsletters and ride calendars with them. Additionally, it’s easy to keep acouple of GWRRA Membership Applications in your saddlebag or carry a fewGWRRA “Courtesy” business cards in your pocket. The latest recruitmenttool is a handle bar hanger, which Anita and Rick shared with us at the lastChapter meeting.

We make most of these items available to you at each Chapter Meeting. Mikeand I always have membership applications at the sign in table. Feel free totake a couple, fill in your membership number on the bottom and put them inyour bike. Extra newsletters are also available at the Chapter Meeting – justask me for a couple. More hangers and cards have been requested andshould arrive shortly. These items will also be available at the District Rally inVisalia. While it only takes a minute to leave some information on a parkedbike, face-to-face interaction is best if possible.

“What’s in this for me?” you ask. More new friends are the obvious answer butwe need to look beyond that. As our membership base increases so does thenumber of people participating in Rider Education. This in turn will hopefullymake the roads a safer place for all. As an additional benefit, with every threenew memberships you recruityou will receive a certificate fora year’s free membership re-newal. Additionally, you and thenew members are automaticallyentered into a drawing for aSilver Wing. GWRRA has vestmedals honoring recruiters withmultiple new members. Younever know, that new membercould turn out to be a bestfriend down the road.

Are you getting excited for thisyears District Rally? Rick & I have a vi-

sion that Visalia will be swarming with Goldwings. Our host hotelis busting at the seams with GW reservations and vendors. Dy-namic daytime seminars, skills games, and bike shows will beavailable to all. For those of you that have not made your reserva-tions, don’t despair; our Web site has added hotels that are waitingfor your chapters to fill their halls. So what do you say, do youshare the vision of taking over the city of Visalia?

One of the highlights of our Rally will be the “Saturday Night TalentShow”. This year’s theme of “Tropical Castaways” ought to sendyour imagination into overdrive. Survivor, Gilligan & his buddiesare just a few ideas that your chapter could develop and have somuch fun in the process. Tropical Shirts, bright sunny colors willlighten our days as we play in the sun together. This is your event,so make it a weekend your chapter will remember.

As you read this, Rick is on the 2nd-3rd leg of his Four CornersTour. For those of you that have finished this event, you knowwhat a thrill he’s feeling right now. Maybe it’s not the best timeright before a District Rally, as I’m sure his mind is buzzing withmore ideas. But he’s had this trip planned since last year, andhey, we have a wonderful support staff that will keep the ball roll-ing.

The momentum truly is growing, as we prepare to take Visaliaby storm. So pack those trailers, do a little brainstorming on yournext pie ride, and plan how you want to participate in this yearsrally-Best Dressed Chapter/Couple/COY, Talent, Bike competitions, try something new as you step out of your comfort zone. We reallyare just one big GW family that looks forward to sharing in yourDistrict Rally experience. So make it FUN!

Okay, now it’s time for the big one (dun, dun, dun!) Are you ready to be a Mas-ter? The pillar of Rider Education at GWRRA! Someone others look up to andaspire to be like! Are you that special kind of person who is willing to walk the walkand talk the talk? Of course you are!!! We knew that!

Level 4’s are the Master Tour Riders and Master Co-Riders! It will take you 1year after becoming a level 3 to become a level 4. You must have 25,000 safemiles at time of application and be a current level 3 participant. You have completedan ERC type of course within the last 2 years. You now must have taken both FirstAid and CPR, still be carrying that first aid kit on the bike and you are committed towearing protective clothing. When you are committed to being a level 4, you will paya $35/applicant application fee, but each year it is only $10/person to renew. Youwill be invited to the Masters Breakfasts at each GWRRA event that you attend (youmust reserve in advance) and you will get to share in the new and exciting ideas ofsafe riding. We will also ask you to look to mentor a new rider ed participant andguide them through the process that you have just accomplished. So now you seewhy we make such a big deal out of the presentation of a Masters Patch, IT RE-ALLY IS A BIG DEAL!!!!

The Safe Miles program is defined as the number of consecutive accidentfree miles driven on all motorcycles you have driven since joining GWRRA. Youkeep track of the number of consecutive safe, accident free miles you have riddenwhile belonging to GWRRA and while participating in the Riders Education Pro-grams. (Miles prior to joining don’t count here but you can join the High Miles Clubfor recognition of all the miles you have driven on a motorcycle). When JR had theaccident, his safe miles went back to zero but since I wasn’t with him, mine did not.You renew safe miles as needed and just see Ralph and Suzanne or go to the website for the forms to renew.

We are proud to have so many members involved in Rider Education, but wecan do better and we need many of you to advance to higher levels. Hopefully thishelped take the confusion out of the program and will inspire you to advance so wecan give out more Master patches real soon!!!

See you on the road and RIDE SAFE!!!!!We are Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge.

Motorcycle Tips and Techniques

Before I let a passenger onto my bike I host a briefing with them. I explainthat so long as they are on my bike THEY are the boss - that if they want to slowdown, or to stop, for any reason, we will do so. I explain that it is not my intention toscare them, ever, while they are on the bike, but to help them enjoy the experi-ence. In exchange for this there is a price: They have four jobs while riding aspassenger, and they must agree to get on and off the bike only with the permissionof the driver.

I explain the ‘passenger twist’ where they connect their helmet cord whilefacing the bike, then do a full turn clockwise so that the cord wraps behind thembefore they get on the bike. That they get on and off only while I am on the bike, which is in neutral, and have both feet down and the side stand up (this, because ifthe side stand is down and they plump themselves on the saddle they will com-press the shocks and that will lever the bike to the right - possibly all the way overonto its side!) I nod and tell them it is OK to get on the bike when I’m ready forthem. I do the same when I’m ready for them to leave the bike. Finally, I ask thatwhen they mount and dismount the bike they try to keep their weight centered onthe bike - that they not pull the bike towards them but, rather, push themselvestowards the bike.

I explain that while we are moving they can talk to me if they want, and thatthey may use the PTT button near their left hand to talk on the CB, but as to mov-ing around, I’d prefer that they pretended to be a sack of potatoes (actually, I tellthem they can move about, just not suddenly) - that they NOT try to help methrough the turns - that they not lean in anticipation or when we are in a turn.I tell them that I have never had an accident, but that no matter what happens whilewe are moving, they are to keep their feet on the passenger floorboards andnever, ever, try to touch the ground with their feet to try to hold up the motorcycle. Ishow them the saddlebag guard rails and point out that they are heavy steel, like‘roll bars’, and will protect their legs only so long as their feet remain on thosefloorboards.Oh, as to those ‘jobs’ they have:

They are to wave at all motorcyclists approaching us in the oppositedirection

They are to wave at all policemen who are on their feetThey are to wave at all children that show any interest whateverThey are to demonstrate to the world that they are enjoying them-

selves, particularly at all rest stops. Failing any of those jobs, I declare, willresult in them having a new job when the ride is over - the spokes!(There are no spokes on my Wing, of course.)As to my own personal rules while riding with a passenger:

The only thing I want to ‘show off’ is that riding a motorcycle can besafe and enjoyable

I wish to challenge myself with the task of trying to shift gears withoutthe passenger being aware of the activity (no head snaps in either direc-tion.)

I want to start and stop with the passenger never quite sure that wehave started to move or that we have come to a full stop - i.e., smoothnessall around.

GOLD ANGELSPRECISION MOTORCYCLE DRILL TEAM

Over the July 4th week-end, your California Gold Angels went by invitation to the HappyCamp River Run rally in picturesque Happy Camp, California. The town is nestled in themountains beside the Klamath River, along State Highway 96, about 70 miles west of Yreka. This rally was predominately a Harley rider event, but Honda Gold Wing was well represented. Half of the team left Temecula at about 11:00am, on Wednesday. The other half left afterwork that evening. The two groups kept in touch by cell phone throughout the day so that thesecond group would be able to locate the first group that night in Sacramento. On Thursday, the team departed Sacramento as a single group, joined by J.R.’s sister, Suzanne, who fol-lowed in a four wheeler. Boys being boys, there was a measure of horseplay along the way. Within the confines ofsafety for ourselves and other motorists, the team did it’s best to impress Suzanne, and otherswith precision lane changes, track changes and “doe see does” while traveling north. At one ofour fuel stops, we were approached by some truckers who had been watching our maneuvers. They were favorably impressed and said they wanted to see more. We gave them informationabout the web site and continued on our way. When we arrived at Happy Camp, we entered the town limit in deuces and rode slowlythrough town, attracting the attention of folks who were in a position to observe us. Afterchecking in at our accommodation, we went to the local restaurant for dinner. (You may havenoticed that I did not say “a local restaurant”, I said “THE local restaurant”. I’ll say no moreabout that.) The next day, we contacted the event coordinators and checked out the area where theperformance was to take place on Saturday. That site was, unfortunately, not acceptable for anumber of safety reasons. Fortunately, the coordinators were flexible enough to show us othersites, and we were able to use the elementary school parking lot for the show. We covered theoil spills with Kitty Litter, marked our field, ran a quick practice, and then spent the rest of theday exploring, playing and swimming in a mountain stream that feeds the Klamath River, fol-lowed by a weenie roast at our cabin. The performance took place on Saturday, and was well received by the locals and the mo-torcyclists attending the event. The Captain had a problem with his brakes, which might haveotherwise killed the show, but one of the spectators offered his 1500, and the show went on.We all felt that this spoke well of the grace of these people. Throughout our stay in HappyCamp, that grace was observed constantly, which made the entire adventure worthwhile.A radio station from Yreka provided live coverage of the Saturday events, including two inter-views with the First Lieutenant. During the performance, Suzanne showed her multi-taskingtalent by operating the video camera and selling booster shirts out of the back of her SUV. After the performance, the team departed in three groups. The first and third groups main-tained cell phone contact and met in Lodi Saturday night, then returned to San Diego on Sun-day. J.R. and Suzanne went to Auburn on Saturday, where Suzanne lives, then spent Sundaytogether, and J.R. returned to San Diego on Monday. The video of the performance will appear soon on the web site at goldangels.com. Over all,we had a number of obstacles to overcome, but we had a terrific time doing it, and we weresuccessful. Please check our web site for future performances and plan to attend those thatyou can.

A Long Strange Trip(aborted & extended….)

By David & Dori Dirig

With June came the opportunity to take a5-day trip up the California coast. We were allset to leave on Thursday, visit friends & familyin Thousand Oaks, and then head north for arelaxed (read no reservations) 4-day ride up thePacific Coast Highway. We joked about head-ing for Oregon, but the plan was to go as farnorth as possible and return by Mondayevening. Things didn’t quite work out the waywe planned.

We were on the bikes ready to leave onThursday AM when we discovered that Davidhad a CB problem and could receive, but nottransmit. No sweat; we’ll do this ride the ‘oldfashioned way.’ <gasp> You mean we can do a ride without CB radios!? Davidwasn’t thrilled about letting Dori have the last word on every conversation for thenext 5 days, but there was little choice. Let’s ride! We had a lunch appointment withfriends and were in Thousand Oaks in time for lunch and socializing. We figured thatwe could track down a Honda shop somewhere along the way and get a new cord orheadset for David. After lunch and calls to a half dozen shops, we were disap-pointed to find out that everyone can order the parts in 2-3 days, but that no onekeeps J&M cords in stock. Welcome to the age of mail order. Friday morning, wetried one more shop in Ventura to no avail. Forget the parts hunt; let’s ride! We tookoff out of Ventura on one of our favorite inland routes, Hwy 33 to Hwy 58 into SantaMargarita. There was some road construction along the way, but the roads weretwisty and unoccupied on a Friday afternoon. Dori commented that it was reallystrange not to have David running ahead of her warning of on-coming traffic androad conditions. In her words, she “had to grow up a bit” on this trip and ride morefor herself.

After lunch in Maricopa, we were on our way west enjoying the desolate viewsand twisty pavement of Hwy 58. Friday afternoon found us in the Paso Robles areaexploring more back roads and looking for a room for the night. Nothin’! Summer-time weekends are not the time to stumble along the coast without a reservation. We ended up backtracking south to Atascadero before we found a room for thenight. This is where we ran into another snag. As we walked past the bikes on ourway to dinner, Dori commented that her front tire looked a little strange. We knewthe tread was wearing down and the tire was getting a little cupped, but we felt wecould get ‘one more trip’ out of the tires safely. Sometime during the day however, something had eaten a strip of tread off the left side of Dori’s front tire. It was notonly tread wear, but a different worn texture to the rubber itself. We don’t knowwhether it was the new asphalt, oil, or the chipped pavement in the constructionzone, but her front tire had taken some unforeseen wear. We were confident that wecould get home, but the concept of running up PCH to San Francisco and beyondon a questionable tire was out of the question.

Hey there Biker FansBy Steve Johnston

Last month Barbara and I had the opportunity to go for an evening ridewith some of the local folks from north county. Not our regular GWRRA group. These are just a bunch of guys that like to ride.No CB’s. No instructions. No rules if you will. There were 11 bikes including the new harley and some of the customharleyish fatboys. Some crouch rockets and a wing or two.Every one is really friendly and easygoing and the weather was perfect. It was a full moon so visibility was pretty good. All in all it was a pleasant experience, but there were some drawbacks.

1. We stopped a lot. I can only guess it was because there were a lotof smokers in the group and perhaps the hard and soft-tail bikeswere harder on the rear than some of the others.

2. There was no sense really of a group. Which left me feeling uncer-tain about the bikes in front of me and behind me.

Without verbal communication and no way other than tail lights andheadlights to see the other bikes, there was not the familiar road hazardwarnings and staggered formation/ single file formations that I have be-come comfortable with.Granted with one or two other bikes, it is no big deal to ride together, especially if you know the riders. You, (I), develop a sense of timing andcan adjust to each other fairly well. But with a bunch of different bikesand riding styles and unknown rider skills, I felt like just one in a gaggle ofbikes. 3. I also had an issue with my running lights (back tail lights). Theykept going out on me whenever I turned off the bike. I had to ask some-one to stay behind me!!! This was very strange. One time, I was the lastperson to get the bike running as I was dealing with the lights. The groupleft and I was the last bike with no lights. It was as if no one even thought about our welfare. That aggravated mea little. The fact that the lights came back on quickly after I was movingwas not common knowledge to them. And it was not a certainty.

In conclusion, riding with this group is ok, but compared to our way ofdoing things, it is lacking a great deal. I was taught early on that youdon’t leave another bike behind. We have to look out for each other. Ifthe last bike pulls off and you’re the next bike up, you pull off and find outwhat’s up. That’s just common sense as far as I can tell. With CB’s it makes a difference, but without them it is an unspoken rule.

THE BIG GETAWAYBy John Del Santo

It’s finally time to start out on that long awaited Vacation !! Be it Sum-mer in the mountains, Fall in the desert, or Winter at the resorts, weneed to prepare our bikes, plan our route (maybe), and adjust our thinkingto get ready for many miles and hours on the road. All Right !

Tire pressure and amount of tread wear…Big Time Important ! Howold is that battery?

Checking hoses and wires for chafing and wear. We can ask otherriders about areas and roadways (“don’t miss Route 89A”) and map outa route, or we can just plan on heading “Kinda Thataway” until we get tosomeplace we like the feel of. Sometimes the destination you want toreach is far away, and it’s not the best idea to push yourself too manyhours and miles at a time, especially for the first couple of days, that’snot the most pleasant type of riding, and tired riders tend to miss seeingimportant parts of the road… and “falling” asleep has a whole differentmeaning when we’re on a motorcycle. There’s a lot of nice stuff to seeand enjoy along the way.

Pack a light set of rain gear… Doing that will almost guarantee thatyou won’t run into any rain on the trip. When traveling someplace coldwe need to avoid Hypothermia. Wearing layers of clothing allows us towear less or more as the day goes along. How fast you are travelingcombines with how low the temperature is to create an extremely lowwindchill factor. When we ride in hot weather, stripping down to a t-shirtwill allow our body moisture to just fly away. In the movies you don’t seethose Bedouin Tribesman in the desert wearing shorts and a tank-top…Gotta be a reason there. Drink a LOT more than you think you need, andif you get to a stop and don’t need to use the rest room, then you’re notdrinking enough. Hydrate !!! Wet your clothes down! Pour water onyour head! Feeling very tired while riding in very hot or very coldweather is a BAD sign of things to come. Know when it’s time to take abreak. A good time to stop is in that little town to buy whatever it is thatyou forgot to pack. Sometimes we get High… in the mountains, that is.Traveling in higher altitudes than we live in can cause a change in equilib-rium, balance, and temperament. Be ready to recognize that.

So Ride, Ride, Ride !! Get out there and do it, and ride smart, andenjoy it ! Because on a bike, the Trip IS the Destination !

24

Saturday AM found us backtracking furthersouth to San Luis Obispo in search of a front tirefor Dori’s Valkyrie. Between the headset and thetire, someone was trying to tell us not to headnorth. We decided that if we could get a new tirewe’d continue on, but if SLO Honda didn’t have atire for her bike, we would head for home instead.Consistent with the previous two days, SLOHonda didn’t have the tire in stock. So we baggedthe ambitious trip, and took our time headinghome instead. From SLO we headed south andstopped in Solvang for a big breakfast and shop-ping. After that, we enjoyed a leisurely trip downthrough the back side of Santa Barbara and onto Ojai for a break and antique shopping. Wehad always ridden through Ojai, so it was nice tostop for once and enjoy this little town. The planhere was to go by the Newhall Cyclegear to fur-ther troubleshoot David’s headset difficulties on

the way home. The Newhall staff was very helpful and had the parts David needed instock (contrary to the previous 7 Honda shops). Evening found us in Temecula fordinner with a free Sunday ahead of us.

The following weekend was Dori’s birthday, so if we could get new tires, wecould try for PCH again! By Wednesday, Dori’s bike had new shoes, David could talkagain, and we had a plan for a second attempt at PCH! Having learned our lesson theprevious weekend though, we made reservations this time. This free-spirit thing is allwell and good until you are tired, worn out, and have to go town-to-town searching fora room. Friday morning, we’re up, packed and ready to ride! Lo and behold however, its raining and David’s bike won’t start. <nuts> All the time spent double and triplechecking that new headset and he left the key turned on the previous night! After acouple phone calls, we had a new battery. Fittingly, it as an Energizer battery whichmatches our riding style; “We just keep going and going and going…….” We were onthe road by 11AM in a constant misty foggy rain that didn’t let up until we got beyondLA. We were in Morro Bay by 6PM, enjoyed Hwy 41 over to Atascadero (great roadwith terrific sweepers), and arrived in Paso Robles before dark.

Not only was Saturday Dori’s Birthday Ride, it also was the Summer Solstice, meaning the longest day of the year. Happy Birthday Dori! We’re gonna spend it in thesaddle! We were up early Saturday and rode Hwy 46W over to PCH where we checkedout the elephant seals at San Simeon. After a coffee break at Ragged Point, its timefor PCH twisties! Took us 2 weeks to get there, but we finally achieved PCH per Dori’srequest.

PCH was great with light traffic, great roads, perfect weather, and no construc-tion. The only challenges were getting around Harley riders that were tiller-steeringthrough the curves. We got around where we could (and some places we shouldn’thave) and thoroughly enjoyed the twisties. In too short a time, we had carved the 100miles of twisties into Monterey and tooled around the bay to Santa Cruz and beyond. The weather was starting to cool off in the afternoon, so we stopped at Half Moon Bayfor gas and lunch (and warmer clothes!). After lunch at Miramar Beach, we were off toSan Francisco. The plan was to stop for a photo-op at the Golden Gate Bridge, buttourist traffic was a nightmare, so we kept on rolling (we just kept going and going andgoing……).

Page 25: A Long Strange Trip - CA-1F7 GWRRA California District Rally Tropical Island Castaways Visalia, CA Aug. 29th - Sep. 1st 2003 The 2003 California District Rally will be held at the

25

Just after the Golden Gate Bridge, we continued north on PCH. As great asHwy 1 was between Cambria and Big Sur, northern PCH was even better! WhilePCH south of Monterey is scenic, PCH north is more diverse and challenging as thepavement varies between narrow coastal twisties and winding roads carving throughthe valleys, inland farmlands, and forests. We did finally come to a constructiondetour on PCH north, and even that was a bonus! The detour to Stinson Beach wasone of the highlights of the trip, as it wound down into the valleys of Muir Woods!Great hairpins on well-engineered roads; the only trouble was we got hung up behind3 Goldwings from Oklahoma. <guess they don’t have curves there> We eventuallygot around them and enjoyed the twisties. We don’t even know the name of the road, but man was it a blast.

The goal Saturday was to reach Bodega Bay before heading inland to Sonomaand Napa. We chased a convertible Mustang along the coast for a while beforestopping in Bodega Bay for a photo-op, and gas and then turned inland on Hwy 12.Some of the roads were fun and twisty, but for the most part it was higher trafficdensity and farm communities as we headed inland. The fun was over, and it wastime to head for the hotel for the night. Our reservation was ambitiously in SantaNella, so we still had a lot of miles to cover. Summer Solstice, dontcha know! Withthe sunset in our mirrors as we blazed east on Hwy 4 and rolled into Stockton for alate dinner. From there, it was a quick shot down I-5 to Santa Nella for the night. Wewere just plain wiped out by the time we arrived at ~11PM. For those of you keepingtrack on the map, Dori’s Birthday Route was Hwy 1 and more Hwy 1 (~300 miles ofPCH), then Hwy 12-680-4-I5. We spent 15+ hours in the saddle covering 500+miles. Dori wanted to max out PCH for her birthday, and I was happy to oblige. Whata day!

The point of pushing so far Saturday was so that Sunday was an easier ridesouth on the freeways home. After we slept in Sunday AM, one tank south found usin Bakersfield for an early lunch. We were spoiled after the day on PCH though andalready bored with freeways, so we split off I-5 at Gorman to enjoy Angles NationalForest. The plan was to take N2 to N3 to Hwy 2E, and then home via I-15. Unfortu-nately, landslides closed Hwy 2 about 15 miles east of Newcomb’s Ranch. We gotas far as Newcomb’s Ranch, hung out with the sport bikers, and took a coffee break. From there, we doubled back west on Hwy 2 and descended into the misty fog thatSo Cal dealt with all weekend. It was interesting riding down through the curvesstanding on the pegs to see through the fog. From there, it was the standard 210-71-60-15S freeway shuffle and home by dinner time. All told (not including the abortedfirst attempt); we covered 1350 miles over 3 days. Morro Bay to Bodega Bay was anincredible ride, and the northernPCH was well worth the effort ofreaching it! We had always wantedto ride beyond San Francisco onPCH, and we were well rewarded forour efforts. It’s too bad the first at-tempt had to be aborted. With anextra day, we could have extendedto Eureka and beyond. There aresome great roads we want to ex-plore in Trinity and Siskiyou Coun-ties. Hmm….David’s birthday iscoming up. Let’s Ride!
