2011-12 NC Faculty & Staff

Dear Friend of Newark Catholic High School,

As we come to the end of very successful school year, I would like to once again thank everyone who sup-ports our school community in their prayers, gifts, and services. It is going to be an exciting summer for us as we break ground for our new building projects. Please stay informed of these events through our webpage so you can join us for all the festivities we have planned as we break ground into a new era at NCHS. This time of the year can be very sentimental for many of us with the graduation of those near and dear to our hearts. To our parents of this class and all those before it, we give our thanks to you for sharing your children with us and entrusting them in our care. The faculty and staff members at Newark Catholic are very proud and committed to the mission of educating our youth and most proud of the accomplishments of our students both present and past. We wish our newest alumni, the Class of 2011, only the best as they begin their journey into the next phase of their lives. With summer upon us, I offer you this prayer and wish you an enjoyable summer with family and friends. May our loving God watch over you and keep alive in your heart all that you have learned this year. Keep your mind on God. Re-member to pray often and to celebrate your faith, at home with your family and at Mass with your faith family. Keep your faith in God. Let all the joys of summer remind you of God’s goodness. Never forget that God is always with you, no matter what. May the God of all creation, who comes to us in Jesus, and lives among us in the Holy Spirit, keep you safe, happy, and holy this summer and always. Amen.

Please keep us in your prayers, as you will remain in ours. May Our Lady continue to bless us.

Sincerely, Beth Hill Principal

Class of 2011 FACTS

68 of 69 Seniors will be attending a College or University in the fall. The 68 graduates earned over $3.9 million in Academic Scholar-ships. Congratulations and Good Luck !!!

The Senior Mass of Fare-well has become an emo-tional day at NC. The stu-dents share their last Mass of the school year as the underclassmen say good-bye to the seniors. The seniors pass down their talents as leaders in the various clubs and athletic teams to the juniors asking them to keep the Newark Catholic traditions alive. After Mass, the seniors line up around the gym as the underclassmen walk around the gym saying their good-byes. Fr. Mi-chael Gribble (NC ‘61), celebrated this year’s Mass and offered blessings, en-couragement and advice on living life after high school. Good Luck and Thank You Class of 2011!

NC = Newark Community

St. Joseph the Worker Day

Kayla’s Wish...Jazmyn’s Cause, was the theme for the Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser held in Kayla Layton’s memory in the NC cafeteria. Fifty NC students served dinner, bused tables, sold 50/50 or whatever was needed to be done. Kayla met Jazmyn at Christmas Eve Mass at Blessed Sacrament. She wanted to help the family raise money for the neurofibromatosis treatments but died before she could contribute. The Layton family has taken up the cause in memory of Kayla. Over $30,000 has been raised so far for Jazmyn’s treatment at the Mayo Clinic.

Left Center: Jazmyn sits on her dad’s lap while eating her spaghetti. Above: Senior Andrea Spencer wears a Kayla’s Wish Jazmyn’s Cause T-shirt.

Each year on the first Friday of May, Newark Catholic holds St. Joseph the Worker Day. Students go all over Newark and Licking County cleaning up flower beds, mulching, painting, planting, doing household chores for the elderly, churches, ceme-teries, nursing homes etc. When the students return, they are treated to a cookout. After the cookout, the stu-dents have the May Crowning of Mary ceremony. This year, the weather brought the cere-mony inside. Senior Nate Taylor was given the honor of placing the crown on the Blessed Mother.

Cabaret

The Spring Cabaret has become a new “tradition” at Newark Catholic. Since the arrival of music and drama teacher Dennis Moore, the arts have come alive at NC. The Spring Cabaret started five years ago and has become an awesome talent show for NC students. Over fifty students performed dance routines, sang songs and played various instruments. The theme for this year’s Cabaret was “Glee.” The evening began with a spaghetti dinner and then out of nowhere a Flash Mob to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” kicked off the show. Both shows played to sold out audiences in the NC gymnasium. Like any good performance, this year’s Cabaret has left us wanting more! We can hardly wait until next year! The group, under the direction of Mr. Moore, has recorded several songs and they will be available on CD in the very near future. The proceeds from the sale of the CD’s will go to sound equipment in the new music room when the new education and art wing is completed. Check the NC website for availability of the new CD.

Prom & Tradition To those on the “outside, ” the NC prom may seem a bit “old fashioned.” However, NC juniors and seniors embrace the old traditions of everyone attending, signing dance cards and for the last several years, arriving in style. Left, Abbi Morrow and Connor Shook arrive at NC in everybody's favorite, The Joy Wagon. Horses and bug-gies, helicopters, limos, scooters, and other assorted eccentric forms of transportation have become the “norm” for arriving at the prom. Students every year try to out do each other as they arrive at the “red carpet” entrance to prom. The gym is decorated each year by the juniors in hopes of making prom a special and last-ing memory for everyone who attends.

Baseball 2011

Senior Michael Lewis pitched the Green Wave to the Regional Championship.

The Green Wave Baseball Team holding the Regional Championship trophy at Beavers Field in Lancaster after a 7-0 win over Racine Southern. The Green Wave finished with a 22-6 record.

Junior Jimmy Lough tossed a perfect game in the District Semi-Finals.

Sophomore James Thomas fields a slow rolling ground ball barehanded and makes the throw to get the runner out at first base.

Junior Garrett Vernau smacks a double in the Regional Final game.

Michael Lewis, Jimmy Lough, James Thomas and Garrett Vernau were selected All District & All State in leading the Green Wave back to the State Tournament. Lewis is the only senior from this group.

In many ways, it was a typical NC baseball season. The Green Wave won the MSL-Ohio title, were District Cham-pions for the 7th time in 8 years and were Regional Champions for the 3rd year in a row. The Green Wave headed into Huntington Park for the State Semi-Finals, against Minster, on a roll and focused to bring home their first state title since 2006. The Green Wave were up 4-1 with 2 outs in the 5th inning. Everything was going their way. Seven outs to the State Final and a chance for another state title...then EVERYTHING went wrong. Five unearned runs on five er-rors put the Green Wave behind 6-4 before the third out of the 5th inning was in the books. The Greenies re-sponded in the 6th, scoring a run and had the bases loaded with 2 outs when a a sharp hit ball by Jimmy Lough was snagged behind 2nd base by Minster’s shortstop. He flipped the ball to second base just ahead of a sliding NC base runner, ending the season in disappointing fashion. Minster went on to become the DIV State Champions. The future looks very bright for NC Baseball. Don’t count the Green Wave out on making it back to the Final Four and winning that 7th State title in 2012!

‘11 Track & Field

Softball 2011

The Lady Wave finished the season 19-9 and were District Champions for the first time since 1993. Playing in the always tough MSL-Ohio, the Lady Wave got better each week as they prepared for the tournament. The Green Wave are young and will return the nucleus of this year’s team next year. Coach Scott Harris and his staff are working hard this summer with the girls and have their eye on making an even bigger splash next year.

A total of 49 student athletes participated in Track & Field this year representing the Green Wave. Most of those 49 tracksters were freshmen and sophomores making the future a bright one for coach Dave Blaine. Senior throw-ers, Mary Parks and Aaron Price led the Green Wave by qualifying for the Regional in both shot & discus. Both competitors just missed qualifying for the State meet by finishing 6th. The top 4 qualify.

Sophomore Maggie Yocum prepares to fire a strike while sophomore Caroline Wollenburg awaits the ball.

2011 Central District Champions !

Alumni in the News

Webster leads Bucknell to Title Luke Webster, a 2009 NC alum, recently won the Patriot League Discus Championship helping the Bucknell Bison to their second consecutive Patriot League title. Luke is a chemical engineering major with a 3.72 GPA. He was named to the All Patriot League

Academic Team. Webster is currently ranked fourth on Bucknell’s all time discus list.

Eisenbach earns pitching honors

R.L. Eisenbach, a fifth year senior at Faulkner College in Montgom-ery Alabama, was named Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year. Eisenbach had 14 wins, the most in the nation in NAIA and his 1.36 ERA is ranked fifth nationally. R.L. guided Faulkner to the World Series after helping take Lubbock Christian to the 2009 NAIA World Series Championship. Eisenbach was drafted in this year’s MLB draft in the 23rd round by the San Diego Padres. He is currently pitching in the Rookie League in Arizona. R.L. is a 2006 graduate and helped lead the Green Wave to the ’06 State Baseball Championship. Good luck R.L. !

Blaney heads up efforts for Licking County Veterans Museum

1976 alum, Ken Blaney has been on a mission, a mission to have a place where Licking County veterans could be honored. Ken worked with several people trying to save the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium before it was torn down in 2002. Since then he has worked to secure funds for a building to commemorate the over 880 Licking County Veterans who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Blaney signed a two year lease with the city of Newark when the YES Clubhouse moved into its new location. Ken has been in-spired by several men in his family. Both grandfathers served in WWII and his father in the Korean War, but it was a visit to his wife's uncle’s grave in Luxembourg that really motivated him. After the visit, Ken said “any man who gave his life, shouldn’t be forgot-ten.” After almost 20 years of planning and hard work, Blaney plans to open the museum by Veterans Day in November 2011 and have a Grand Opening on Memorial Day 2012. The museum will include a granite wall outside that will include the 880 names of the Licking County men and women that have given their lives in the line of duty. The museum will be a great gift to those who have served and for their families to always remember.

From the Advancement Office

I hope this Wave Watch finds you and your family having a great summer! There is a lot going on at Newark Catholic this summer as we prepare for the Festival (July 29&30), the demolition and construction projects that are scheduled to begin, as well as the 2011-12 school year. NC Fest ‘11 is coming fast. We have great entertainment again this year (Friday: Reptile Smile, Saturday: The Un-usual Suspects) and great food (Plaza Pizza, Grill on 21st Ribs and Corn, NCAA Steak Sandwiches, Brats, Italian Sausage, Hot Dogs, French Fries etc, Velvet Ice Cream with Root Beer Floats and Oilers Hog Roast on Saturday), The Little Wave Fun Zone and of course, The Beer Garden. We have several classes planning on getting together to celebrate and a Silent Auction is planned for Saturday with lots of great items for you to bid on. Everything will be ready for you and your family. All we need is good weather and you! I look forward to seeing you! The Building Our Future Capital Campaign enters the construction phase this August. We have hired local con-tractor Robertson Construction as our General Contractor. Permits are being filed and preparation for asbestos removal in the convent are being made. We are still a little short of our final goal of $2.2 million. When we raise the remaining $500,000, we will be able to add a great education and arts wing along with a new girls locker room, a new main entry and Guidance Offices to our original school building. This is quite a bit more “bang for our buck” than we originally thought was possible in the beginning of this campaign. If you have not made a pledge or donation to the Building Our Future Campaign, we would greatly appreciate your support. The construction of these facilities will put our school facilities on par with the public schools in our area, helping us to attract and retain students, keeping Newark Catholic a solid, viable, educational opportunity for years to come. Please stop by and see me this summer if you’re in town or introduce yourself to me at the festival (I’ll be celebrat-ing my 35th reunion with my classmates from 1976 !). Have a great summer! GO GREEN! Thom McManus Director of Advancement Class of 1976 P.S. Your name, your families name, your class, should all be part of the BOF Campaign Honor Roll

We are very excited that we are ready to break ground on this long anticipated, greatly needed expansion and re-furbishing of Newark Catholic High School. Exact dates for demo will be announced on our website. The expansion, however comes with some sadness. When the school was constructed in 1957 and the doors opened in 1958, the convent and school building were filled with Dominican sisters. The sisters brought discipline, character and most of all love to the students. Even though the sisters and their convent are gone, the memories of them will live with us forever. Thank you Sisters!
